One to Zero

The “curse of knowledge,” or “the curse of expertise,”…
is a cognitive bias where we incorrectly assume that everyone knows as much as we do on a given topic. When we know something, it can be hard to imagine what it would be like not knowing that piece of information. (Google)

I offer my time and energy to people over and over again, trying to answer questions, be a sounding board, give advice or make connections. 

I always reply to those who reach out and I try my best to pay it forward. It’s my modus operandi, always has been.

But today, someone I’ve never met/spoken to asked for 60 minutes of my time so I could help her with her business. 

When I apologised and said I was crazy busy due to being 4 weeks out from maternity leave and could we delay until September, she came back nasty and demanding.

I was shocked, because I hadn’t said ‘no’, I’d said ‘not right now’. Yet she felt so entitled to my time, to my brain, to me, that she couldn’t accept my polite but firm boundaries.

It pissed me off, because let me be clear, I don’t owe anyone anything. Least of all unbridled access to me. 

If I was so inclined, I could say no to everyone, I could refuse any request for help, I could ignore the messages entirely, but I don’t. 

I make space. 

And I will continue to do so, but that space is on my terms, my timeline and adhering to what works for me. 
 
Thats the deal. And it’s a pretty good one.

E8: Vince Kadlubek - Part 1 | The Future of Imagination, Building Meow Wolf, the Real-World Metaverse

Flexing your skills can deceptively feel like flow. 
And that confusion can easily suck the soul out of your career. 

When you're flexing skills, you're often moving fast and you're getting things done in a really efficient way. You know the connections to make, the paths to follow. Work can feel really easy. The "time to results equation" is abundant and as a result, time powerfully warps when in skills mode. 

I think this is where the confusion comes in. 

Time also warps when in flow, but moving quickly through a task because you've done it a thousand times is not the same as time suspending when you're in a state of ecstatic flow. Both kinds of work create connections, but flow work tends to produce wildly creative connections whereas skills work is usually about wiring similar paths as before. Both have a sense of ease to them, but one is box-checking while the other is playful. 

They almost feel the same at times. And it probably doesn't help that powerful flow is often rooted in deep skill. But flow work tends to have a magical, exploratory vibe and personal satisfaction to it, as well as divergent outcomes, that pure skills work just doesn't shimmer with. 

As you amass more and more skills, it's easy to confuse an efficient skill-state with flow. It's tempting to say yes to gigs that want your skills on repeat - it's the work to output ratio that bosses and companies love, work gets easy, rewards can multiply and hell, you've earned that ease and safety.

And all that is good. But stay aware: a career defined only by skills work can start to feel stagnant, if not regressive, a check-collecting exercise and not much more. And if you're just about the check, cool (no judgement here). But if you want to keep it fresh, tune your awareness to the different energy between the two and do everything you can to make the space for flow.

It's simply about the credibility of the company and this story is told not just by the executives, but by all of the players. The story of the storyteller is not the founder's story nor simply the brand story. 

It is a story told in parts by every character in the play. The story of the storyteller is, ultimately, a kind of kindred quest. Everyone tells it. 

The story of the storyteller is not just what you do. It's who you are, how you got here and what you believe. 

When these are clear and socialized both internally and externally. everyone on your team and every customer is telling the same story, your story.

I never wanted to be a teacher.
But I have always been an early adopter. 
That is why I am a Sensei.
Sensei is a term of honor; the literal translation is “person born before another” or “one who comes before.” In general usage, it means “teacher.”

Seeing someone’s eyes light with the spark of realization when I share how they can make a global impact by supporting the right businesses, connecting to the right client for brand growth, or experiencing how practicing Tai Chi can transform their well-being is incredibly fulfilling. It’s about spreading the message that each of us, especially entrepreneurs and leaders, holds the power to steer our endeavors toward being a force for positive change. 

This “teaching” isn’t just about imparting knowledge; it’s about igniting a chain reaction of goodness, inspiring each person to recognize their potential to craft a brighter future for themselves and our planet.

I’ve found joy in being the unintentional teacher. 

After all, every brand (and person) can be a beacon of change, illuminating the path towards a more sustainable, connected world—one shared story at a time.

Two years later, I’ve had time to think about this topic.

Verbal branding and verbal identity are different.

I analyzed how I approached visual branding and what branding itself is.

Branding is how you influence perceptions, but we don’t call it logo branding; we call it a visual identity or asset. 🧐

This could all be bullshit in a year as I work with more brands and gain experience, but since no one’s talking about it, here it is.

The contradiction is as visible as the nose on your face 🤥. And when they're called on their bullshit they make excuses or get self-righteous. 

Yes, I’m in mean Brandma mode today.

I’m a people person which means I check on folx. Especially folx who are trying to connect with me claiming to do what I do. 

   👉🏾 I read their headlines. 
   👉🏾 I check their profiles. 
   👉🏾 I visit their websites
   👉🏾 I read their post and their comments. 

And for the most part, all I see is smoke and mirrors. The illusion of personal branding fueled by a buzzword and fear of not being seen, remembered, or heard.

It's a game of all tell and no show.
💩 Yes, I see you’re award winning, but what have you done lately?
💩 Wow! You can 10x’s my business? So your spam tactics work?
💩 Oh, you wrote a best seller? Was it free on kindle? Are folx still talking about it?

What I see is a lotta folx confusing self-employment with entrepreneurship.

I would venture to say one required more sales strategy while the other needs more brand strategy. I'm sure you can guess which one.

Personal branding isn't for the weak or the meek and it's authenticity has expired.

So here's your chance to talk about it, be about it, fight about it.

As Brandma always says, "Your voice is important, so speak up."
