In 2017, I walked away from a profitable big law practice, leaving behind the only career I’d ever known. Which sounded crazy to a lot of people, given that I: • Had gone from believing I was destined to be a lawyer (since the age of 11), to questioning why I’d ever wanted to be a lawyer 2 years in, to realizing I could create legal success on my terms. • Replaced a wrong-fit (for me) Texas firm with a perfect-fit firm (that was - go figure! - big law), forcing me to pivot my practice area. • Had been the first associate in my office to get promoted to partnership (thanks - at least in part - to the small book of business I had built as a senior associate). • Lost ALL the business I made partner with (thanks to the financial crisis), so had to pivot - yet again - and rebuild from scratch. • Grew my new practice to over $1MM in less than two years (while going on bed rest and maternity leave for my second child). • Built a multi-million dollar practice over the next few years while navigating my way through a battle with breast cancer. Why did I leave? I realized that I had a formula for balanced success that actually works, and wanted to make an individual impact on the lives of lawyers. Because professional success and personal happiness need not be either/or. Balance isn’t about balancing two sides of an equation - you can’t separate work from life (or vice versa). You are ONE integrated human being with many interests.
