The British Laryngological Association (BLA) is a membership society that aims to achieve advancement in laryngology for the benefit of the public through research, education, and training. 

I started working with the BLA council in June 2019. Since then, I have worked on the BLA social media strategy, setting up new platforms and enhancing existing ones. I have developed the BLA Connect app as a free resource with virtual conference functionality and launched the podcast series BLA Connections: A Clear Voice with Natalie Watson as podcast host. The Podcast has been listened to in over 60 countries. We will launch the third series in early 2021.

I joined the ISCoS team in April 2020 as a communications and media consultant. Communication & Media Liaison and Podcast Producer | The International Spinal Cord Society 

WENTS and Friends podcast is the official podcast series by Women in ENT Surgery UK.

On this project, I am working in the role of producer working alongside WENTS UK.

This series is to stimulate dialogue revolving around diversity and inclusivity with a view to learning more about the traits that make us unique.  This will be a celebration of the experiences of all peoples within and beyond medicine to foster a better understanding of our individual journeys and fellowship in our commonalities. Hopefully, leading to a more equitable and thriving healthcare space.

Podcast Producer 

I started working with the Dystonia UK team from Episode 4 of their podcast series, as their podcast producer. I am enjoying working on this series and evolving this project with the team. I especially enjoy the patient and people's stories you will hear on this show.

I worked with the events team to provide technical support on the event's virtual platform and delivery. I produced promotional videos for the run-up to the event and post-event promotional videos. I edited and stitched all the pre-recorded material together for the event, which helped the event's seamless quality—also producing navigational videos on using the virtual platform for the event delegates. It was a fantastic conference and a pleasure to be a part of the team.

I implemented a social media strategy for the final run-up for the 2022 National Hotel Marketing Conference. By running a marketing audit I wrote a strategy which increased the reach, exposure and engagement of the existing social media platforms.

Working with the Let's Talk Surgery Podcast team of the RCSEd and Sadie Khawaja of the HEENW Careers Fair we produced an 11 episode series on career pathways of specific surgical specialities. With each episode, three guests from different stages of their surgical career discuss their stories and why they do what they do, their work-life balance and their advice for others starting out. 

It was such a pleasure to record each episode and hear the human story behind the surgeon.

Last week was busy with two speaking slots, a networking event and a planning meeting. 

First off, Erin - Virtual Assistant, invited me to be a guest on her podcast 'Women in Business.' Erin has mastered the art of creating a flowing conversation on a podcast, and I had so much fun, at times forgetting I was actually ON a podcast.  

I love that the aim of this podcast is to show and inspire women of all ages that there can be a different way to do things and that you can create your own opportunities.  We talked about neurodiversity, growing up in the 80’s and understanding your full potential and letting go of your fear. Next up, I was invited to do a short talk at the WeDO Scotland breakfast networking on social media and the realities of running social media. When you start really delving into this medium you realise it is huge, and it can feel overwhelming and isn’t just about posting something. This may be why social media can sometimes be seen as an add-on to a strategy or can sit a little outside the overall planning. 

But by weaving social media into your strategy from the beginning, you can set clear objectives and test and analyse what is working. This will support your team and make the conveyor belt of constant creating a whole lot easier. With continued analysis, you will understand your audience and then be able to shape your client's journey. It may be as simple as choosing one platform and doing that well instead of feeling you have to be on all platforms. It was a lively Q&A, and I loved extending my talk through the conversations I had with attendees.

Then I attended an 'Inspiring Women Leaders' session hosted by Sunil Varu. This initiative was started back in January of this year, and all talks are held in Dunfermline, which is fantastic in itself. 

I was so moved and inspired by Kavita Varu’s story. Kavita is the epitome of resilience, determination, hope and joy. I walked away from her talk inspired and elevated. Similar to the discussion I had with Erin on the podcast, Kavita shows it doesn't matter what age you are; you can change your path and create your own opportunities. Thank you so much, Kavita. I look forward to following the next stage of your story. 

And finally I ended Friday with a late lunch with Marlene Lowe for an IoD Fife & Tayside Branch planning meeting. Thank you, Marlene, for your support, I am excited for what is coming up. 
 
It was an incredible week and a hard week. All of this came right off the back of the Easter holiday juggle, and my husband was away all week, too, so the juggle continued. 

Running a small business can be tough as you try to be all things to all people, but being part of supportive communities and attending inspiring talks like Kavita's can give you just the lift you need and remind you why you do what you do.
