Your job has coverage. Your kids don’t.

I love meaningful work but I refuse to miss the moments I can’t replay. 
Titles change. Hugs at the door, giggles at dinner, “Mum, watch this!” 
that’s the real portfolio.

Here are the tiny guards that you can also use so work doesn’t swallow home:

- Hard stop, soft start. Laptop closed by ___, slow morning cuddles before Slack.
- Phone-in-a-basket dinners. Presence over pings.
- School-run windows. No meetings, non-negotiable.
- Weekend first. Family blocks go in the calendar before work fills it.
- Defaults that protect me. “No, but here’s a better time” and “I’ll get back to you tomorrow.”

Careers can pause and still progress. Childhood doesn’t pause for anyone.

Real productivity isn’t more hours. It’s fewer, better moves that 
create outcomes and calm.

8 swaps that actually move the needle:

1. Outcome before inbox
- Ship one result, then open email. Impact first, admin second.

2. Write to decide, not meet to talk
- Short written updates with owners and deadlines beat endless meetings.

3. Single-task sprints
- Work in 40–50 minute focus blocks. Tabs closed. Phone away.

4. Top-3, not a 30-item list
- Name three outcomes for the day. Everything else is optional.

5. Protect focus with “office hours”
- Batch replies at set times. You’re not a helpdesk.

6. Ship v0.1 early
- Release a rough version, learn fast, iterate. Perfect later.

7. Do the hardest thing first

Here’s the truth about progress:

If your path looks like spaghetti, you’re probably on it.

Success is not a straight line. It is planning, failing, changing, failing again, 
then showing up anyway. That messy middle is where the work gets real 
and the growth sticks.

Here are the checkpoints I keep coming back to:

1. Plan small, start now
2. Expect a stumble, learn fast
3. Change one thing at a time
4. Build discipline when motivation dips
5. Stay consistent when it gets boring
6. Refuse to quit on a good idea too early

You’ve been gone, working hard. 
You open the door… and the movie moment isn’t there. 
A sideways glance. A quiet “hi.” It stings.

Here’s the reframe: kids protect themselves first. 
It’s not rejection. It’s regulation.

What helps:
- Lead with calm. “I’m so happy to see you.” No pressure to perform.
- Offer presence. Sit nearby, match their pace, let them bridge the gap.
- Use a tiny ritual. Snack and water, a 5-minute doodle, a short walk.
- Name the next hello. “Tomorrow I’ve got drop-off.” Predictability soothes.
- Try again later. Bedtime is gold for soft do-overs.
