I never felt like I belonged. Because I was born into a military family who later relocated back to the states, I was always on the outside looking in. Growing up in the south, I was even more aware of how different I was. As a biracial and bilingual child, I struggled to fit in. I used to get teased by my peers. That took a toll on my self-esteem. I grew more timid and shy. And then, I discovered a new world that existed outside of school. This was during the time when we had to go online after listening to the dial-up tone (America Online, anyone?). There was no Facebook or even YouTube. But there were online forums and blogs. I found that I could write. I could write about anything and find an audience for my words. This was life-changing. I found that I loved creating content, interacting with people, building a community, and ultimately growing together. 🤲 I went to college at eighteen, unsure of what I wanted to do. I went from being an English major to a German major. One thing led to another and I ended up leaving school. I worked retail for a few years before I finally decided to go back and get my Bachelor of Arts degree in Communications with a focus in Professional Writing. But I still wasn't sure what I wanted to do. After graduating, I got a job working from home, teaching ESL to Chinese students. It was during the middle of the pandemic that I launched a self-hosted WordPress blog. I was thrilled to get back to writing. I also discovered that I loved interacting with the 40K+ community of readers that I grew on Twitter, Instagram, and LinkedIn. Now I am working as a Social Media Manager at a startup by day, while crafting ATS-compliant resumes by night.
