RIP proprietary AI🪦

Open-source LLMs just took a huge leap — and MiniMax 2.5 is leading the charge.

A few weeks ago I got fed up with the costs and constraints of proprietary tooling that modern software engineering depends on. So I dove into open-source alternatives.

I looked seriously at DeepSeek, which had a solid efficiency profile (~60% on SWE-Bench and ~$0.03 per task), but as my friend Vlad Grankovsky immediately flagged, it's throughput is a blocker for syncronous work. 

In other words DeepSeek is slow, harsh for agentic coding. So I took out the company card once more to buy the proprietary stuff. 

But now MiniMax 2.5 is out— and the numbers speak for themselves: 75.8% at just $0.07 per task on SWE-Bench Bash, for comparison the top model Claude 4.5 Opus resolves 76.8% at $0.75.

That’s cheap, fast, and open, everything I've been looking for. As soon as OpenHands or an alternative matures a little bit more, my software development is going full OSS.

Huge props to the MiniMax team for pushing this forward — the industry is better when tools like this are transparent, efficient, and accessible.
