Do I regret leaving law?

The answer is simple. (But not what you think).

I never left.
I just do law MY way now.

- I write legal content which often includes legal advice and law updates.
- I help create law podcasts which often include legal advice.

Maybe there's a deep routed meaning behind never truly leaving law.

Law is my comfort zone.

Noone will ever take my decade + of legal knowledge and experience from me.
(It's there forever for me to do what I will.)

So don't ever feel like you're "stuck in law." 

You're not stuck in an office or a role. 
You have options.

You can "do" law your way.

I witnessed affairs, bullying, discrimination, I heard about harassment and other illegal activity.

When I look back on my time in law, the work was great, colleagues were great, clients mostly great, but…

If I had stayed in that culture, I worry how that would affect me now.

After years of seeing behaviour like this as “normal”, where does that leave your moral compass?

But when everyone is doing it, it becomes tolerated and almost expected.
(This is my experience and hopefully doesn’t happen in all.)

My main reason for leaving law was to travel.

But I’m just now reflecting on and truly processing what actually happened.

We need good lawyers, we need to cultivate positive working cultures.

I know too many great lawyers who left law because of culture.

Me and Helen Pamely are working together on the same mission, we want to make a change in the industry.

We can raise our voices now, we can talk from experience.

I'm cutting my podcast content.
After 5 months of data and feedback:

-I know what works
-I know what my audience wants

When I started my podcast More Than A Lawyer, I promised to share my journey with you.

Here’s what I’m cutting:

-Solo episodes (people prefer conversations)
-Subscription episodes (wrong content for the audience)

I’m not afraid to adapt based on evidence to make the podcast experience better for my listeners.

My goal is to make this the best law podcast in the world (dream big).

To inspire and educate lawyers and wanabe lawyers.

With growth comes change.

I was openly bullied by my boss, everyone in the office knew.

Nothing was said.

And the worst part is, I never ever spoke up, until now.

I was screamed at in front of colleagues
I was criticized in front of colleagues
I was blamed for things that weren’t my fault
I was undermined and punished for no reason

To be honest, a lot of the things have even been blocked out of my memory.

No matter how hard I tried to bend over backwards to please and deliver, it still continued to be bad.
(There was no HR department.)

It was obvious to everyone that I was a target because everyone else was treated great.

This made it worse.

I was terrified of speaking up, although I wanted to.
I was terrified of losing my job.

Sadly this happened in multiple legal workplaces, it wasn’t a one off.
Sadly, I know of many others who suffered worse bullying in their legal careers.

It’s time for change.

The emotional and mental impact of workplace bullying is affecting not only the wellbeing of victims but everyone around. They’re thinking, Am I next?

It all comes down to culture. 
A culture where toxicity is normal.

My experiences affect me still now, years and years and years later.

I could never speak about my experiences before.

But I will now, to be the voice for others who can’t.

I created a top 1% podcast. (It wasn't hard.)

I recorded more than 21 episodes in 4 months.

Top 1% podcasts have 21 episodes or more
90% of podcasts don’t get past 3 episodes

Podcasting is a numbers game.

But.

21 episodes doesn’t = a successful podcast

It’s also about:

- Prioritising audience 
- Focusing on quality (content and sound)
- Spreading the word

To have a successful podcast, do these:

- Create episodes based on market research
- Review stats and feedback
- Analyse what works
- Create more episodes like that
- Focus on small changes 

Build a reputation for consistent quality episodes. 

Try. Test. Always be learning.
I'm in it for the long run.

Are you?

Honest advice: 9-5 to self employed 

Going from a steady job to self employed was a scary financial step.
 
(Reliable salary - unpredictable)

But when your "leave" is stronger than your "remain" you plan your exit regardless.

For me, this involved:

- Saving a buffer in case things went wrong.
- Being clear on non negotiable out goings.
- Building up a client base before taking the jump.

This preparation gave me peace of mind along with the idea that if it all went so badly, I could always get a job.

With a family to support, he needed a smart exit plan. This involved a thorough financial strategy. 

Others would have seen his move as risky, but behind the scenes, Jono had a solid plan.

Yesterday I recorded a podcast in Bali.

2 years ago, I didn't think I'd be doing this.

Podcasting has changed my life.
(There's no doubt about it)

The best part of having a podcast is networking.

Having deep conversations and therefore making strong connections with like minded people.

I love to keep in touch with people who I connect with through my podcast More Than A Lawyer.

Yesterday Brian Dixon who is a digital nomad lawyer and who I connected with through my podcast asked me if I was up for recording a podcast episode in the middle of some rice terraces in Bali. 

The answer was a no brainer. 
(Even though this is a no-work- vacation)

We covered some brilliant topics, law firm culture, the billable hour, the future of law, the downsides of digital nomad life.

(Episode out next month).

Podcasting has created collaborations, lasting friendships and incredible opportunities.

I've never recorded in a proper podcast studio before, I'm always on the road and remote.

It's funny what happens when you meet all sorts of different people around the world.

People overcomplicate becoming a digital nomad.

My unfair advantage is the same as yours.

Thanks to the internet, almost anyone can work remotely.

Here's how I became a digital nomad:

1. Chose a skill that I could do remotely (writing and now podcasting).

2. Found clients to provide a service (through cold outreach).

3. Created an offer & delivered it.

The key to digital nomad life is not complicated.

It's all about finding a remote service to provide or selling a digital product.

The rest is down to you.

Digital nomad life + tax = headache
(This is what I thought.)

When you're travelling and working it can be a nightmare figuring out how taxes might restrict you.

- Where do you pay tax?
- How long can you be in one country?
- Which travel expenses can you claim?

He's now free to travel and work and create a workplace culture that is flexible and adaptable.

For many years I was silenced

It took its toll.

- Couldn’t speak up about poor treatment
- Often bashed down for innovative ideas
- Unable to stand up for myself against bullying, at the risk of losing my job

It’s only now that I’m realising how compression & restriction can contribute to anxiety & overall health.

And it’s hard to be productive and motivated when you feel this way.

For years I could never speak about what happened in my law career.

Because word spreads and “complainers” can damage their opportunities for progression.

But since starting More Than A Lawyer it’s been like a release.

And listeners tell me the same.
- They don’t feel like the only ones anymore.
- They don’t feel isolated.
- They see another way.

Conversations are important.

On More Than A Lawyer podcast, the conversations are like private chats, where my guests truly open up about the industry and how to live differently as a lawyer.

Freelancing is full of contradictions.

- Don't over charge but don't under sell yourself.

- Don't seem too desperate or too available but keep your pipeline full.

- Don't overwork and burnout, but those who work hard are more successful.

- Be approachable and friendly but be professional (not cold).

- Get clients through personal branding not cold outreach, but it'll take years.

As freelancers, we're constantly juggling how we think we should be and what's comfortable.

No wonder it's confusing in the beginning. We're receiving mixed messages all the time.

The key to freelance success is finding the right balance for you.

When I first started freelancing I worried about all of these contradictions, but the reality is they're distractions.

- Find your way of working.
- Create your own values and stick to them.
- Set your boundaries and live by them.

Cut out the noise and stop comparing.

Because comparison is the thief of joy.
It's your journey, it's your business.

The art of asking great questions is this

Being a great listener.

Listening isn’t just about hearing the words spoken.

Listening is about this:

-Hearing tone
-Hearing underlying meanings
-Finding gaps to pick up on
-Hearing opportunities for exposing wisdom

When you LISTEN you can:

-Dig deeper
-Ask thoughtful, out of the box questions
-Invite meaningful conversation

I realised this since starting my podcast More Than A Lawyer.

If you want to ask better questions, be a better listener.

You can't be a digital nomad lawyer, you're right

Because it all comes down to mindset.
If you think you can't, you won't. 

5 years ago I was sat in a law office dreaming of how to work and travel.

I was told it was a pipe dream. 
So I continued to dream.

Then one day, my colleague told me her brother had quit his job and gone to India to learn how to teach yoga.

My reaction was this: Is that even possible?

That moment opened my eyes to a new world.
Change your mind and you change your world.

Since sharing other lawyers' stories on my podcast More Than A Lawyer, there have been a few negative comments like “you can’t travel and be a lawyer, it has to be one or the other”.

They are intimidated by a life they don’t know.
But this doesn’t mean it isn’t possible.

In the latest episode of More Than A Lawyer, I’m back with Brian Dixon.

Brian is thriving as a digital nomad lawyer, he's been living this life for 2 years. 

This time we are: 
- Confronting negative comments.
- Addressing the logistics around how to actually become a travelling lawyer for any doubters.

My first law job was terrible.
One girl quit 2 hours into the role.

Another girl was pulled into a meeting and never came back.

That place became renowned for being a bad place to work.

It churned out people and the retention rates were spectacularly low.

A friend said she had an interview there, I told her don't bother. 

There is a reason I'm telling you this.

When a law firm becomes known for being a bad place to work, it starts attracting the wrong types of people. 

It slowly becomes unsuccessful or unsustainable. 

Here's the way around it:

Raising the reputation of the firm as the go-to place to work.

In other words, employer branding. 
It's the best recruitment tool.

One of the major ways to do this is by utilising media. 

- Having a podcast. 
- Showing what it's really like to work for you.
- Showcasing workplace culture.

This might be controversial, but I'll say it anyway.

Podcasts should be more unpredictable.

You know what grinds my gears, when a guest podcast starts with:

Host: “Thanks for coming on the podcast”
Guest: “Thanks for having me” or “Good to be here”

Then:

Host: “How did you get into [insert industry]”
Guest: Starts waffling - (the question is broad).
Listener: Switches off (unless the guest is show stopping).

So many podcasts fit this mold.
It’s predictable and dull.

Unless I’ve already built up trust and connection with the podcast (and host), I’m likely to immediately turn off.

For new listeners who don’t know what to expect, this isn’t a good first impression.

-Think outside the box
-Start on a hook
-Switch it up

All I ask is this: Think about the listener.

Here's how to grow by word of mouth:
Make your podcast a solution.

Speak to one person.
Solve one problem.

- Example: On my podcast I talk about topics that people rarely address in the legal industry.

I speak to lawyers.
Every episode solves a problem.

- Episode with Laura Wharton (She/Her) - How to progress as a lawyer with dyslexia 

- Episode with Liz Smith - How to leverage LinkedIn as a lawyer

- Episode with Olivia James - How to address performance anxiety as a lawyer.

You get the picture.

If you consistently give value and offer solutions, you grow your reputation.

People will recommend a podcast they gain value from.

Perfectionism is procrastination.

(Let me explain)

Perfectionism has no place when you’re starting a podcast.

It won’t serve you in the beginning.

It will stop you.

My logo isn’t perfect
My name could be better
I don’t have a website for my podcast
I don’t have the perfect guests
I don’t have the best equipment

You’ll find a million excuses not to start.
But you’re losing time.

The podcasting industry is projected to grow to $17.59 billion by 2030.

And it’s a game of consistency and longevity.

But here’s the catch:

Once you’re on a roll, you need to be picky about quality and content.
(To retain your audience and grow it.)

Here’s what I’ve found:

- Perfectionism will kill your podcast at the start.

- Not being a perfectionist will kill your podcast in the end.
