Last night with my daughter reminded me of one of the best and hardest parts of B2B sales.

Flexibility.

It’s a blessing.
And it’s a beast.

It’s what lets us show up
at school events, when they’re sick, for late-night talks, or just to be there.

But it’s also what forces us to flex, adapt, and context-switch like crazy.
And that… is hard on the brain.

The science agrees.

UC Irvine research shows that switching tasks takes your brain ~23 minutes to fully re-engage.
That’s a real cost when your job (and life) both demand presence.

But there’s good news
presence is one of the most valuable investments you’ll ever make.

Not just for your kids.
But for your future relationship with them and your peace of mind.

So how do we make “flexibility” easier on our brains?

1️⃣ Use a 2-minute ritual to start and stop.
A simple signal tells your brain: “Now I’m shifting.”
Rituals have been shown to lower stress and restore focus.
It could be a deep breath, a short affirmation (“World’s greatest mom. World’s greatest sales pro.”), or a quick note of gratitude.
Doesn’t matter what you pick
Ionly that you do it.

2️⃣ Keep family blocks consistent.
Like time-blocking your calendar for clients, consistency makes transitions smoother.
If you volunteer, do it the same day/time each week when possible.
Your nervous system loves predictability.

3️⃣ Plan for 20 minutes of undistracted connection.
Research shows that 20 minutes of focused presence builds emotional safety and lasting connection… far more than constant partial attention.

Friday Failures: The $2M Deal We Thought Was Ours

One of my ex-McKinsey bosses once told me:
Failure isn't failure. It's information.

He treated failure with curiosity.
"It's just the input I need to succeed," he’d say.

Sales' biggest goldmine isn't in the deals you win.
It's in the ones you lose.

Here's one of my biggest losses & what I learned.
My hope? That it helps you spot a landmine and close that year-end deal you've been counting on.

My Biggest Deal Failure

The call came in. We were shocked.
We'd planned on celebrating. But we lost.

Two million dollars. Four times our average deal size.

I’d prospected them from scratch.
Two meetings with their CEO.
A two-day demo. My CEO met their CEO twice.

We had full access. Executive connection.
And we still lost.

I was 31. Six years into selling enterprise software.

I had done everything I was taught:
Got to power.
Built relationships.
Quantified ROI.

I even took a 3-day finance course so I could talk balance sheets with their CFO.
Even my CEO was convinced this was ours.
It wasn't.

The Big Lesson: access can blind you to what's really happening.

❌ I didn't test if access meant commitment.
Access felt like momentum. It was due diligence.

"Walk me through how you'll present this."
"What objections will you get?"

Those questions would have shown if my champion could sell it → not just attend meetings.

❌ I didn't map personal incentives.
I sold ROI. They bought safety.

The VP? Ambitious. Politically savvy.
The competitor sold him career insurance → the vendor that made him look smart and safe.

I solved the business problem → they solved his personal one.

❌ I built the business case for organizational ROI.
I nailed the numbers but missed the personal, operational, and mission wins.

The competitor didn't have a better product → they had a better story of connection & safety.

❌ I didn't pre-empt the "risky choice" narrative.
We were best of breed. They were enterprise.

The competitor positioned themselves as the safe long-term bet.
We looked risky.

Ask yourself:
"What would make this feel risky?"
"What will competitors say?"

Those questions reveal landmines to address before it's too late.

For your year end closes, run this quick check:

✅ Can your champion defend this without you?
✅ Do you know each stakeholder's personal wins?
✅ Have you asked "What else?" three times to get to real problems?
✅ Have you built a case at every level (personal, operational, mission → not just ROI)?
✅ Have you pre-empted what could derail this?

Access is not a trophy.
It's a test.

(But I’m keeping the lesson.)

That’s me at 18.
I pulled this photo out after a college-aged seller asked me:

“What do you do when people don’t take you seriously?”

It brought me right back.
To my big-hair days.
Small-town Ohio.
Walking into a CPA’s office as a 23-year-old payroll rep.

“Oh no. The salesperson is here.”
Also me: female, young, not from around here.
The trifecta of not being taken seriously.

I was shaking in my boots.
(Fine… they were probably clogs.)

But I didn’t go in to prove myself.
I went in to help.

I didn’t ask him to buy.
I asked if he’d partner.
And I brought a binder thick with local business contacts I thought could help his clients.

He said:

“No one from your company has ever come here wanting to help me before.”

He never became a client.
But the next month, he sent me a referral.

→ Moments like that taught me this:

You don’t get taken seriously by demanding respect.
You get taken seriously when you add serious value.

And in sales, that gets tested every day.

The “honeys.”
The “you’re just a kid.”
The “let’s keep this short, it’s the salesperson.”

They still happen.
But they don’t define you.

Collect go-to phrases that shift the tone without losing footing.

Take your growth seriously before you expect others to.
Confidence is built, not inherited.

Before calls or meetings, try this:
☑️ Write a quick WOOP (Wish, Outcome, Obstacle, Plan)
☑️ Visualize success. Objections overcome. Momentum building.
☑️ Pick a cue word: Value. Service. Clarity.

It sets your intention and creates clarity your buyer can feel.

Check your script. Is this about them or me?
Stay steady. Professionalism is quiet power.
