Hugh Anthony is a public speaker, storyteller, mental fitness coach, and servant leader. He coaches individuals and advise organizations to move them from success to significance through the transformative power of storytelling, cultural fluency and purpose-fueled leadership.

With a PhD from the University of Waterloo and executive education from Harvard, MIT, Stanford, and the University of Colorado Boulder, he leverages experience, engagement and expertise to shape strategy and fuel decision-making to transform real-world challenges into possibilities.

Hugh Anthony have spent two decades working across the private, not-for-profit, and public sectors with decision-makers developing programs, innovative policy and implementing processes. He has consulted globally on human equity, organizational transformation, and intersectional inclusion, helping organizations navigate complexity with clarity and cultural fluency. 

His approach integrates mental fitness strategies, visioning, storytelling and cultural fluency to create communities of collaboration that drive deep engagement, creativity, and sustainable growth across diverse sectors.

Where do you go to heal when you're hurting?

There's a question we don't ask enough—of ourselves, of each other.
In Mexico City, I found an unexpected answer in the most delicate of places: Catia Lulattouf's home, a quiet sanctuary where injured hummingbirds come to heal.

These tiny creatures—fragile, disoriented, beaten down by storms or heat—arrive broken. And here, they're given what they need most: time, care, and a safe place to remember their wings still work.
Some recover and return to the wild. Others stay, living out their days in gentle refuge.

As I watched one hover inches from Nicolas Reusens, wings beating 80 times per second yet somehow creating perfect stillness, I realized something profound:

● Healing doesn't always look like
   strength returning. Sometimes it
   looks like finally letting yourself
   rest. Watching Catia's work taught
   me what moving from hurting to
   healing actually requires:

→ Find your sanctuary first The
     hummingbirds can't heal
     mid-flight. Neither can we. Identify
     your safe space—a person, a
     place, a practice—before you try to
     "fix" anything. Healing begins
     when you stop running.

● Accept help without shame. These
   birds don't refuse care because
   they "should" be stronger. They take
   the nectar offered. Let someone
   hold space for you. Say yes to
   support, even when pride whispers
   no.

● Honor your own timeline Some
   birds heal in days. Others need
   weeks. Some never return to their
   old flight patterns—and that's not
   failure. Your healing isn't a race. It's
   a reclamation.

● Tend to what's tender daily Catia
   doesn't rehabilitate through grand
   gestures. She shows up     
   consistently with small acts of
   care. What's one small thing you
   can do today—not to be productive,
   but to be gentle with yourself?

● Know that staying is healing too 
   Not every healing journey ends with
   going back to "before." Some birds
   stay in the sanctuary permanently.
   That's not giving up—it's choosing a
   different kind of wholeness.

Sometimes healing means redefining what flight looks like for you now.
We live in a world that glorifies resilience—the bounce back, the comeback, the grind. But what about the sacred in-between? The space where we're not "crushing it" but simply tending to what's tender?

Catia doesn't just rehabilitate hummingbirds. She reminds us all that being worthy of care isn't about being productive. It's about being alive and needing help.

→ So I'll ask again: Where do you go
     to heal when you're hurting? And
     more importantly—are you letting
     yourself go there?

Sometimes the bravest thing we do isn't pushing through. It's allowing ourselves to hover for moment, suspended between what broke us and what will carry us forward again.

This moment that reminded me why kindness truly matters. This act and generosity of kindness that is truly resonating. 

A gentleman noticed an elderly woman sitting with her groceries. Without hesitation, he offered to help carry them to her car. It took him maybe five minutes. But the look on her face? That told a different story.
She didn't just receive help with her bags. She received acknowledgment. Recognition. A moment where someone saw her—truly saw her—and chose to act.

Here's what we often forget:

● Kindness isn't just about the
   immediate act. It's about the ripple
   effect we can't always see. That
   woman likely carried that gesture
   with her for the rest of her day—
   maybe longer. She might have
   called a friend, smiled at a stranger,
   or simply felt a little less invisible in
   a world that often overlooks the
   elderly.

   And that gentleman? He reminded
   everyone watching (including me)
   that small acts have enormous
   power.
 
In our professional lives, we're constantly measuring ROI, tracking KPIs, and optimizing outcomes. But what if we measured kindness the same way?

 ▪︎ The colleague you mentor who
    goes on to mentor others.

▪︎ The team member you
    acknowledge who finds their
    confidence again.

▪︎ The stranger you help who pays it
   forward in ways you'll never know.
  
Kindness compounds. It multiplies. And it costs us nothing but a moment of our time.

The truth is: every interaction is an opportunity to change someone's trajectory—even if just for a day.
We underestimate the power of simply recognizing someone's presence. Of seeing people. Of choosing generosity when we could just as easily walk past.

So here's my challenge: Look for your grocery store moment today. It won't always be obvious. But when you see it, act on it. Because kindness is never wasted. Ever.

What does it mean to truly see the world anew? For 12-year-old Jonathan has severe color blindness and that question took on profound meaning during an ordinary science class that became an extraordinary moment of human connection.

During a science lesson about his condition, his principal—Scott Hanson, who is severely color blind himself—handed him something precious: his own EnChroma glasses and simply said "Try these."

Jonathan put them on. Froze. Then broke down in tears. For the first time in his life, he could see color. Real color. The world exploded into view—vibrant, overwhelming, beautiful beyond words.

But here's where the story becomes something more.  The community rallied. A GoFundMe campaign intended to raise $350 for Jonathan's own pair of glasses exploded past $35,000. Jonathan's family made an immediate decision: the excess would help other children experience the same gift.

This story reminds us of three profound truths:

● The things we take for granted can
   be someone else's miracle. Every
   sunset, every traffic light, every
   child's drawing—these ordinary
   moments contain extraordinary
   beauty for those experiencing them
   fully for the first time.

● Empathy bridges worlds. Principal
   Hanson didn't just understand
   Jonathan's experience intellectually
   —he lived it. That shared 
   understanding transformed a
   simple gesture into a life-changing
   moment.

● Kindness multiplies. One principal.
   One pair of glasses. One vulnerable
   moment. The ripple effect? Tens of
   thousands of dollars that will
   change countless lives. When we
   lead with compassion, we don't just
   solve one problem—we inspire
   movements.

True leadership isn't loud. It doesn't require a corner office. Sometimes it's handing someone your glasses and saying, "I understand. Let me help you see."

Jonathan didn't just see color that day. He saw what humanity looks like when we choose to truly see each other. That's a vision worth sharing and world worth building.

Healing doesn't rewrite your past—it rewrites your future. The experiences that wounded you left their mark, but here's the truth: they don't get to author the rest of your story. You do.

Healing isn't about erasing what happened. It's about reclaiming your power to choose what comes next—freedom over resentment, peace over inner chaos, and growth over stagnation.

● Start where you are. Healing isn't
   linear, and it doesn't require
   perfection. Some days you'll feel
   strong; other days, you'll need to
   rest. Both are part of the process.

● Feel it to heal it - Avoiding the pain
   only prolongs it. Give yourself
   permission to acknowledge what
   hurt—then consciously decide not
   to carry it forever.

● Rewrite the narrative - You're not
   what happened to you. You're what
   you choose to become despite it.
   That shift in perspective changes
   everything.

● Surround yourself wisely - Healing
   accelerates in the presence of
   people who see your worth, not
   your wounds. Choose your circle
   intentionally.

● Create the future you deserve - 
   Every decision you make today is a
   building block for tomorrow. Small,
   consistent steps toward peace
   compound into transformation.

Your past shaped you. Your choices will define you. And the beautiful thing about the future? It's still unwritten—and the pen is in your hand.

Your mind doesn't just observe reality — it creates it. The difference between leaders who thrive and those who stagnate isn't intelligence or resources. It's perspective.

When you train your mind to hunt for problems, you'll find them everywhere. You'll see obstacles, limitations, dead ends. Your energy drains into what's wrong, what's missing, what can't be done.

But when you train your mind to seek solutions, everything shifts.

   becomes a puzzle worth solving.

▪︎ That setback? It becomes data for
   iteration.

▪︎ That constraint? It becomes the

Solution-focused thinking isn't toxic positivity. It's strategic optimism. It's acknowledging reality while refusing to be paralyzed by it.

Here's what changes when you rewire your default setting:

→ You ask "How might we?" instead
    of "Why can't we?"

→ You find leverage points instead of
     hitting walls.
→ You build momentum instead of
    collecting excuses.

Your perspective is your competitive advantage.

The question isn't whether challenges exist. The question is: where are you aiming your attention?

Because whatever you focus on expands. Train your lens deliberately.

The four pillars that transformed how I live and completely changed how I show up everyday are:

● Goals keep me focused on what
    matters. 

● Grace reminds me to be kind to
    myself when things don't go as
    planned.

● Growth pushes me to see every
    challenge as a lesson.

● Gratitude anchors me in 
   appreciation for what I have right
   now.

Together, they've taught me that an amazing life isn't about perfection or  having it all figured out. It's about showing up with intention, learning from the stumbles, and celebrating the messy, yet beautiful journey.

The life you want, it's not waiting for you to be ready. It's built in the daily decisions. The small commitments. The courage to begin again. One intentional day at a time.

The Nobel Peace Prize 2025 Winner is a beacon for democracy. María Corina Machado's Nobel Peace Prize isn't just her victory—it belongs to the Venezuelan people, to defenders of democracy everywhere, and to anyone who refuses to surrender to authoritarianism.

Why her story matters to us, because she is a beacon of hope. Born in Caracas in 1967, Machado started as an industrial engineer before co-founding Súmate, Venezuela's premier election-monitoring organization. She served in the National Assembly until the regime forced her out. Since then, she's endured bans, threats, and relentless persecution. Yet she has never stopped fighting.

This award recognizes her extraordinary courage: leading a peaceful democratic movement in one of the world's most repressive environments, refusing to be silenced, and mobilizing millions to defend their right to choose their future.

What this win represents:
In an era dominated by strongmen and populist rhetoric, the Nobel Committee sent a clear message about what real leadership looks like. It's not about power or privilege—it's about persistence, principle, and purpose.

Machado's victory reminds us that ordinary citizens, especially women, can be the moral backbone of democracy. She's redefining political courage, showing that the greatest acts of leadership often come at the greatest personal cost.

A statement through contrast:
While some political figures position themselves as Nobel hopefuls by courting attention and flirting with authoritarian impulses, the Committee chose someone who has risked everything—her safety, her freedom, her life—to protect democracy.

That choice speaks volumes.
Why this matters now - Democracy is fragile. It requires defenders willing to stand firm when intimidation mounts and consequences loom. María Corina Machado is that defender. Her recognition gives us something we desperately need: proof that courage still counts, that truth still matters, and that freedom is always worth the fight.

Today, we celebrate not just an award, but a reminder: democracy survives when people refuse to let it die.
