My initial role for this year was as a secondary education teacher of English in a French language school. However, after the consistently improving exam results of my original classes I was given the role of the principal teacher for the school's primary department. I was thus responsible for preparing curricula and delivering classes to children from the ages of 6-17. We also offered classes to underprivileged and orphaned Thai children. Aside from my role as a teacher, I was the school's sole translator for all documents (registration forms, financial documents, websites, etc.)

I have coached up and coming junior players and also those very new to the sport for the past several years. Having played for many years myself, my friend and I arranged a junior squash club to encourage new players to join and current players to improve. This program gave them the opportunity of being coached by international players free of charge.

The main goal that we worked on during my time with the company was expanding a predominately online business into wider territories. The aim was to build relationships with large retailers at home and overseas to give the company a physical presence to compliment its strong online foundation. My role was to research market trends and gaps, specifically in Northern Ireland and the Republic of Ireland, and use my knowledge of these domestic markets to establish business strategies that were feasible to pursue. I was also responsible for contacting retailers or online distributers in Francophone regions as I was familiar with the language and culture, given my educational background.

My role was as the Group Co-ordinator for an English Language Activities Camp for French children visiting Ireland for the summer. I would manage a group of English teachers and other staff in a live-in facility for the duration of the camp. I was responsible for organising all activities (kayaking, hiking, orienteering) as well as being responsible for all administrative and financial aspects of the camp. I acted as lead translator for all documentation and also as sole interpreter for any tours or visits scheduled.

As part of my French degree I elected to work abroad as an English Language Assistant in Marseille. This program was aimed at schools in 'zones d'éducations prioritaires' (priority education zones), allowing me to work in particularly disadvantaged areas with children of various racial and religious backgrounds. During this year I also worked free-lance as an English tutor.

VOLUNTEER ACTION FOR PEACE

This volunteer project was based in disenfranchised areas on the outskirts of Paris. It was for two months and involved volunteers from 15 different countries. Our job was to build an outdoor sports centre for the residents of an underprivileged estate. It involved excavating land and putting various sporting apparatus in place over the course of the month. Due to the wide range of nationalities present, I undertook the role of interpreter between the locals and those volunteering with me.
