I grew up in a 5th generation business. That may sound impressive but it was very much a humble, mom-and-pop blue collar business. It was all I knew growing up, and going into college I thought I would eventually become the 6th generation. Spoiler: I am not the 6th generation, and I never dreamed of one day helping business owners with financial and exit planning. It wasn’t until after seeing what my parents went through with their exit, that it became clear what I wanted to do. You see, my mom and dad both played equal parts in the business, so when my mom was diagnosed with Alzheimer’s my junior year of high school we knew changes would have to be made. The problem was, my parents had never done any financial planning or exit planning. There was no LTC insurance for my mom so my dad would have to become the primary caretaker for her. That meant being forced to step away from the business. There had not been succession planning, so I (at age 19) was not fully prepared to take over operations, and certainly didn’t have enough money (or access to) to begin buying my parents out. So they sold at a discount to competitors. They got lucky and made it out ok, but they could have been a lot better off. I learned a lot going through that experience, mainly that you don’t always get to choose your exit, so it pays to put together a plan for your finances and business that can withstand life’s unexpected curveballs. That is why I set out to be “the guy my parents wish had come along 15 years ago” When I’m not working with business owners, you can find me knee deep in a creek with a fly rod in hand (likely with one of my two kids strapped onto my back), cooking up new recipes with my wife, or tinkering on the farm. • Securities offered through LPL Financial.
