I’ve never set foot in the U.S. - not even once.

And yet… last week, my face was on Times Square, New York.

Let that sink in.

Life has a strange sense of humor. Sometimes your work travels farther than you ever have.

I was thousands of miles away.
Different time zone.
Different continent.

But somehow, my message made it to one of the biggest stages in the world.

And this didn’t happen in isolation.

Topmate believed in me.
They opened doors I didn’t even know existed.

They amplified my work beyond borders, beyond geography, beyond limits.

That moment wasn’t just about a billboard.
It was about proof.

Proof that:

My interview for the SDE-2 role at Microsoft over 4 yrs ago was challenging on a whole other level…

But it was also one of the most rewarding experiences. Here’s how it went 👇

🔹 Round 1: Online Coding (90 mins)
→ Two questions were asked, one based on the KMP algorithm for pattern searching, & another on Valid Sudoku.

I remembered the KMP approach & implemented it quickly, but the second one tested my ability to handle constraints efficiently.

🔹 Round 2: DSA + Optimization (Video Call)
→ 2 more coding questions, Sorted Matrix and Container With Most Water.

I solved both, but for the matrix one, I initially gave an N×NlogN solution; they pushed me for an optimized version, which made the round interesting.

🔹 Round 3: Low-Level Design (LLD)
→ Task: Design an online chess game.

This round tested design thinking, not just coding. I structured classes, handled moves, and discussed edge cases like undo/redo and multiplayer sessions.

🔹 Round 4: Technical + Culture Fit
→ Taken by a Director-level engineer, focused on my past projects, decisions I made, and challenges faced.

They wanted to see how I approached real-world engineering problems, not just theory.

🔹 Round 5: HR + Team Fit
Mostly scenario-based questions: how I handle conflict, leadership mindset, and long-term goals.

When results came, I got selected, & what really worked in my favor was my depth in system design & being able to communicate my approach clearly.

Even after 10+ yrs in tech, I still see this pattern repeat for SDEs aiming to switch to top PBCs 👇

And yet those interviews don’t convert into their dream offers.

But honestly? This isn’t about weak fundamentals. 

I’ve seen experienced engineers, strong in DSA and core fundamentals, still struggle to get interview calls. 

In most cases, this happens because: 

1️⃣ Experience ≠ Interview Fit: SDE interviews test very specific skills. If your preparation doesn’t align with what’s required for the role, your years of experience won’t help. 

2️⃣ Timing & Headcount Matter: Recruiter response, open roles, and timing influence outcomes more than most engineers expect. 

3️⃣ Heavy Competition: For every single role, hundreds of SDEs apply. Standing out requires more than just good coding skills.

But you can still succeed if you focus on:
→ Being consistent
→ Showing leadership signals
→ Doing structured preparation

October 2020: Rejected by Microsoft
March 2021: Joined Microsoft as an SDE 🚀

In 2020, I was rejected by Microsoft because my communication and DSA skills weren’t strong enough.

This rejection pushed me to rework my entire approach.

✅ For DSA, I focused on graphs, dynamic programming, and advanced data structures using Striver’s A2Z sheet and LeetCode.
✅ For System Design, I used playlists by Gaurav Sen, SudoCODE, Engineering Digest, and the System Design Primer.

Competing against thousands at Microsoft wasn’t easy. But I didn't lose hope.

Now that I've achieved my goal, I can say:
