Inventory & Forecast Analyst (manager)

Most people see data as a technical problem, but real success comes from aligning data & engineering with business, people, and processes. I'm a self-taught engineer who became a director of data engineering. I provide clear insights on creating solid data foundations. I focus on practical solutions, avoiding getting caught up in tools or jargon.

Here's what's driving me crazy about AI tools in data work.

They're making things worse. Every LLM heads straight for the same trendy patterns instead of proven ones. Ask for a data pipeline and watch it spit out:

- Medallion architecture
- dbt transformations
- Some data warehouse (BigQuery, Snowflake, Databricks... pick your flavor)
- Also it turns out there is no other data modeling outside of Kimball these days

Same cookie-cutter approach.

I’m convinced functional, idempotent, tested pipelines are what is needed.

When data is predictable, it's fixable. Idempotent runs let you replay steps without breaking everything downstream. Automated tests catch problems before they explode.

I'm building this way with my teams now. It's the only path to sustainable data work without burning people out in data engineering.

Functional, idempotent data pipelines create predictable, testable flows. They slash technical debt and actually scale.

And I'm convinced this is the way after building this stuff for over 10+ years.

Finding a staff engineer is like dating in your 30s.

Everyone looks good on paper. They have the right experience, went to decent schools, and say all the right things in interviews.

But something is missing. You know it, but you can’t quite explain it.

You meet candidate after candidate. They check the boxes but lack that spark.

The deep thinking. The natural curiosity that makes you think, "this person gets it."

So for data engineering most won’t struggle with basic technical concepts. However, you ask them about 3NF vs Kimball and they stare at you like you're speaking Klingon.

But, one day you meet someone different.

They don't oversell themselves. They don't name-drop frameworks or brag about their GitHub stars. They solve problems in data engineering, software engineering, and leadership.

When you ask them a tough question, their eyes light up. They want to understand the "why" behind everything.

That's when you know.

You found your unicorn.

The dating(interview) pool is rough right now. Too many inflated titles. Not enough genuine curiosity.

But the unicorns are out there.

You have to be patient enough to find them.

Also, I'm hiring.

I’ve struggled to focus for years. Becoming more aware of the distractions (finally) helped me improve my career. 

Because, identifying a few triggers lets me address a few real issues, not just the symptoms of distraction.

So, what are my 3 triggers pull me away from focus?

1. **When others are around:** I get sidetracked quickly with people nearby. Whether it’s colleagues, family, or background noise. my fix: I use amazing headphones and seek quiet spaces to work and listen to music with no lyrics.
2. **Administrative** : I find administrative work tough. Structured or analytical work is easier for me, or learning something new so I schedule these tasks in my calendar or use my 15-minute hour-glass once started, I'm usually good to go.
3. **Post lunch:** My focus and energy take a dip during the day. Mornings are when I'm most productive. Afternoons, especially after lunch, can be tough. I sometimes take a quick power nap to recharge. Even with four cups of coffee, my brain still needs a boost to refocus.

Alternatively, sometimes I just need to relax, enjoy a refreshing drink, and remind myself that life goes on.

What about you? Have you noticed any patterns or triggers that pull you away from important work?

I bounce ideas off AI constantly.
But I never start with "Write me a user authentication system...."

That's like asking someone to read your mind.

Instead, I start messily:

"I need user login for my app. Sign up, log in, password resets. But I'm freaking out about security holes. What am I missing? also don't be sycophant""

Then we go back and forth:

"What if someone brute forces passwords?"

"How do I handle password resets without opening security holes?"

"What gaps am I missing in my login flow?"

The AI spots what I can't see.

Questions my assumptions.

Pokes holes in my logic.

It's like having a coding partner who never gets tired of your questions.

I get better code. fewer bugs. less time fixing things later.

Is it just me, or does anyone else feel like their phone has become a battleground against AI telemarketers?

Yesterday I got a call from "Evelyn" (again?) at "the Lending Union's West Coast branch". 

Yes, it was another AI bot.

It feels like I can't escape these robo callers, no matter how many times I put my number on the do-not-call list.

This technology is advancing rapidly with no regard for consumer privacy or the sheer annoyance factor.

I just want to be left alone, is that too much to ask?

I remember being 7 years old and asking endless questions, and constantly saying yes to everything.

I've been reflecting on this childlike curiosity lately and on where I lost it.

What truly troubles me is a widespread absence of wonder I see. 
I know I need to pause to marvel at the world around me. This sense of wonder is incredibly important.


I did improv theater this summer, and I’m so happy I got uncomfortable and pushed my curiosity.

I’m bombarded with tons of calls daily from eager outsourcing firms. My LinkedIn inbox? A deluge of similar messages, all vying for my attention. My gaze is set on coding, free from the distractions of external engineering help at this time. Currently, I'm on the lookout to expand my team with two new hires.
I prefer to work with contractors and teams who have strong recommendations from people or firms I've worked with.
 Unsolicited offers? Not my cup of tea.
