Here are 4 ways to stack the deck in your favor...

1. Clean banner: Use this to show off skills and professionalism
2. Profile picture: Be professional (I used my phone and backyard)
3. Title: Quit using terms like "aspiring" (You ARE a Data Analyst!)
4. Post your journey: This is the most important.

Data analytics is flooded and has a ton of opportunities

But if you don’t market yourself, it will take you so much longer to land a job

It took me a while to learn the tools for data

(until I found out you can niche down your learning)

I had to learn from a bunch of places

Not only that, but I took general data tool courses

I even had to use a totally separate site to host a portfolio

This was all before I learned about Maven Analytics

- Take data-specific courses
- Take a specific learning path
- Learn from world-class instructors
- Even host your portfolio all in one place

I found that once I started learning what Data Analysts need to know, it sped up my learning 

As a bonus, it was even more fun to learn that way

How to Learn like a Data Analyst

Learning SQL first can affect how quickly you land a job

SQL fundamentals poke it's head into all the other tools you need to learn

Excel → SQL will help you understand formulas more easily
Tableau → Understanding joins, IFs, CASE statements, etc.. are all used here
Python → Preparing and manipulating data go hand-in-hand with SQL

If I had to choose again I'd learn 

- SQL
- Excel
- Tableau

In that order.

(Yeah I'd still skip Python)

If you already learned in a different order, that's ok as long as you learned

But if you're just starting out, make it easier on yourself and start with SQL

Which flavor of SQL

These are all the decisions I struggled with when starting out

Don't get caught up in choosing the best one

(they all can get the job done)

Pick one and stick with it

You'll have so many transferable skills that if a new job requires and different version of a tool you learned

You will pick it up very quickly

Less stress, more doing

Dashboards in your portfolio are one of the most important things to becoming a Data Analyst but without context they are useless

(it's easier than you think)

1. Include a short summary near each chart
→ You don't want your audience to come up with their own conclusion. Tell them!

2. A large description
→ Include a large description of what your goal was for creating the dashboard and any/ all insights you uncovered

I personally love number 1 if you can pull it off

Keep in mind this is only for projects, in the real world the context will be clear

Here is what I needed to know to land my first data role and why it was important

1. Proficiency in SQL: used to extract, manipulate, and analyze data from relational databases. The majority of companies will have you use SQL

2. Data Visualization: Being able to effectively visualize and communicate data insights is crucial. Use tools like Tableau or Power BI

3. Data Manipulation: Your data will not always be the way you want it so knowing how to change it is so important

4. Data Cleaning: A little different than manipulation but learning techniques for handling missing data, outliers, and data inconsistencies can go a very long way

5. Become a problem solver: Having the ability to break down complex problems into manageable components is something you will be asked in an interview and shows how you think as an analyst

Focusing on these skills will make you dangerous in the applicant pool!

I used to spend hours trying to figure out SQL when I first started in data

Then came ad hoc requests which would stress me out

Of course, over time it got easier as I became more and more familiar with SQL

But man I wish AI was in a place it is now 

Life would have been so much easier

It's important to be "consistent" when trying to become a Data Analyst

(that does not mean "daily")

After already being through it, I can tell you:

If you want to land your dream job, you need to listen to yourself

1. Find time in YOUR schedule → not everyone has time to learn every day

2. Be strategic with learning → you don't need to learn everything

3. Listen to yourself → take a break if you need to

Learning doesn't stop when you land a data job

You need to know how to manage burnout

Above all else, be consistent about it

Here's what I mean:

I never kept track of my achievements working in a warehouse.

That's just not what anyone thinks about (especially if you are transitioning into data).
