AI content carries a gate tax. 

Most businesses don’t see it yet.

A new peer-reviewed study has revealed something striking: 

LLMs may be biased in favor of other LLMs.

When comparing human-written and AI-written product descriptions, paper abstracts, or movie summaries, models like GPT-4 consistently chose the AI version more often than humans did.

 In product descriptions, for example, LLMs preferred AI text 89% of the time compared to just 36% for human evaluators.

This bias raises a serious concern. 

As LLMs become more embedded in commerce, search, and content filtering, AI-authored pitches may be given automatic preference. 

Human-created messaging risks being down-ranked, not because of quality, but because of how the system evaluates style and signals.

Researchers call this a potential “gate tax.” 

Businesses might feel compelled to adopt AI tools, not as an innovation choice but as a baseline requirement to avoid being filtered out. 

That creates a new cost of entry in digital markets and could widen the digital divide between those with access to AI assistance and those without.

The key takeaway is clear: 

Visibility will increasingly depend on how well businesses adapt their communication to be both human-resonant and AI-visible.
