My 3 Months journey of a HR Student is just about to end.... 5 Aug till 22 Oct!

And I finally understand why culture eats strategy for breakfast.

When I first stepped into HR, I thought it was about policies.
Forms. Payroll. Compliance.

But HR isn’t paperwork.
It’s people.
It’s power.
It’s purpose.

The past 3 months taught me this.. organizations don’t transform because of strategy decks.

They transform because of people who believe in the vision.

One thing that really hit me during a recent HR sharing my Alvin Aloysius Goh (MSHRI, MCIPD, MSID) with we, the pioneer batch of SCTP HR...

Leaders set the vision.
Middle managers carry it.
Employees live it.

It’s a chain of belief.
Break one link and culture collapses.

I learned that transformation isn’t just about going digital.
It’s about going human.

A CHRO once said when Maybank moved from a brick-and-mortar bank to a digital one,
it wasn’t the technology that was hardest.
It was the mindset.

You can buy software.
You can’t buy culture.

Middle managers became the bridge...
 the “foot soldiers” translating vision into everyday behaviour.

But even then, the national culture of each region shaped how that vision landed.

Because culture isn’t one-size-fits-all.

It’s lived differently in New York, Manila, or Singapore.

That stuck with me.
Because HR isn’t about managing headcount.
It’s about managing meaning.

And as someone who came into HR from the digital world... 
I now see where both must meet.

And this is the unique blend of knowledge and skillsets that I now bring to the table!

Glad to throw AI onto the mix as well! 

AI can optimize workflows.
But it can’t inspire purpose.

That’s where HR steps in.. 
to keep organizations human as they evolve.

The future of HR isn’t just top-down leadership.

It’s bottom-up co-creation.
Letting the next generation of workers shape the kind of workplaces they want to be proud of.

Because the future workforce will be smarter.

Faster.
More connected.

And maybe...
more human than we expect.

So here’s my reflection after 3 months in HR:

Transformation starts with clarity.

Culture sustains it with connection.

And people always make it real.

𝗗𝗼 𝘆𝗼𝘂 𝗵𝗮𝘃𝗲 𝗮 𝗽𝗿𝗼𝗯𝗹𝗲𝗺 𝘄𝗼𝗿𝗸𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝘄𝗶𝘁𝗵 𝗮 𝗳𝗲𝗺𝗮𝗹𝗲 𝗯𝗼𝘀𝘀? I am male and 𝗺𝘆 𝗺𝗮𝗹𝗲 𝗠𝗗 𝗮𝘀𝗸𝗲𝗱 𝗺𝗲 in my interview for my first job... I've 𝗯𝗲𝗲𝗻 𝗽𝗼𝗻𝗱𝗲𝗿𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝘁𝗵𝗶𝘀 𝘀𝗶𝗻𝗰𝗲 𝟭𝟵𝟵𝟳!

This suddenly replayed in my mind and reflected, what could my male MD be thinking at that point in time? Is he warning me about 𝘀𝘁𝗼𝗿𝗺𝘆 𝘁𝗶𝗺𝗲𝘀 𝗮𝗵𝗲𝗮𝗱 if I proceed to accept this job, then?

Is this a bias he had? I had to confront this exact bias head-on last week as I reflected for an answer, years down.

It’s the unspoken elephant in every old-school boardroom, the whispered worry that kills progressive promotions: "𝗠𝗲𝗻𝘀𝗲𝘀 𝘁𝗲𝗺𝗽𝗲𝗿 & 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝘄𝗼𝗿𝗸𝘀." 

𝗜𝘁'𝘀 𝗵𝗲𝗿 𝘁𝗶𝗺𝗲 𝗼𝗳 𝘁𝗵𝗮𝘁 𝗺𝗼𝗻𝘁𝗵 𝗮𝗴𝗮𝗶𝗻! People whispered behind her back.

The fear that women are always led with that "𝗯𝗶𝘁𝗰𝗵𝘆" 𝗼𝗿 "𝗲𝗺𝗼𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻𝗮𝗹" 𝗶𝗻𝘀𝘁𝗮𝗯𝗶𝗹𝗶𝘁𝘆 energy that compromise every strategic decision, turning the office into a political landmine.

This 𝘁𝗼𝘅𝗶𝗰 𝘀𝘁𝗲𝗿𝗲𝗼𝘁𝘆𝗽𝗲 isn't just cruel; it's a 𝘀𝘁𝗿𝘂𝗰𝘁𝘂𝗿𝗮𝗹 𝗯𝗮𝗿𝗿𝗶𝗲𝗿 𝘁𝗼 𝘁𝗮𝗹𝗲𝗻𝘁 that costs businesses millions.

• It forces exceptional female leaders to spend energy managing toxic perception instead of driving revenue.
  
• It suggests a woman’s passionate, results-oriented critique is inherently "emotional" while a man’s identical directness is simply "strong leadership."

This outdated thinking implies a woman’s natural cycle is a greater threat to the P&L statement than a man’s unchecked ego or poor judgment. 

But here is the high-value truth my ex-MD needed to hear:

• High-performing female leaders are often more 𝗱𝗮𝘁𝗮-𝗱𝗿𝗶𝘃𝗲𝗻, 𝗼𝗯𝗷𝗲𝗰𝘁𝗶𝘃𝗲, 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗿𝗶𝘀𝗸-𝗮𝘄𝗮𝗿𝗲 precisely because they have been forced to be 10 times better than their male peers just to overcome this ridiculous, baseless bias.
  
• What the old guard labels "bitchy" is often just 𝘂𝗻𝗰𝗼𝗺𝗽𝗿𝗼𝗺𝗶𝘀𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗰𝗹𝗮𝗿𝗶𝘁𝘆, 𝗵𝗶𝗴𝗵 𝗽𝗿𝗼𝗳𝗲𝘀𝘀𝗶𝗼𝗻𝗮𝗹 𝘀𝘁𝗮𝗻𝗱𝗮𝗿𝗱𝘀, 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗮 𝗿𝗲𝗳𝘂𝘀𝗮𝗹 𝘁𝗼 𝘁𝗼𝗹𝗲𝗿𝗮𝘁𝗲 𝗺𝗲𝗱𝗶𝗼𝗰𝗿𝗶𝘁𝘆. The perceived "temper" is usually 𝗽𝗮𝘀𝘀𝗶𝗼𝗻𝗮𝘁𝗲 𝗶𝗻𝘁𝗲𝗻𝘀𝗶𝘁𝘆 applied directly to a costly business problem.
  
I wish I can tell my ex-MD that the ROI is simple: 

• 𝗙𝗼𝗰𝘂𝘀 𝗼𝗻 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗰𝗼𝗺𝗽𝗲𝘁𝗲𝗻𝗰𝗲, 𝗻𝗼𝘁 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗰𝗵𝗿𝗼𝗺𝗼𝘀𝗼𝗺𝗲𝘀. 
  
The best leaders, male or female, are defined not by the "bitchy" scale 
but by consistent, objective decision-making, relentless focus on the mission, and world-class emotional intelligence. 

Their gender is irrelevant to their results.
The biggest risk to your company isn’t an "emotional" female manager but cowardice to hire the best person because they are still clinging to a tired, 1950s stereotype.

𝗪𝗲 𝗮𝗿𝗲 𝘀𝗲𝗲𝗸𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝘁𝗿𝗮𝗻𝘀𝗳𝗼𝗿𝗺𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻, 𝗻𝗼𝘁 𝗲𝘅𝗰𝘂𝘀𝗲𝘀.
𝗥𝗲𝗮𝗱𝘆 𝘁𝗼 𝗯𝘂𝗶𝗹𝗱 𝗮 𝘁𝗿𝘂𝗹𝘆 𝗽𝗿𝗼𝗴𝗿𝗲𝘀𝘀𝗶𝘃𝗲, 𝗵𝗶𝗴𝗵-𝗽𝗲𝗿𝗳𝗼𝗿𝗺𝗮𝗻𝗰𝗲 𝗹𝗲𝗮𝗱𝗲𝗿𝘀𝗵𝗶𝗽 𝘁𝗲𝗮𝗺?

🚨 𝗪𝗲’𝗿𝗲 𝗮𝗹𝗹 𝗼𝗻 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗵𝗮𝗺𝘀𝘁𝗲𝗿 𝘄𝗵𝗲𝗲𝗹.

Running. Sweating.
Collecting certificate after certificate.
Still… no job.

Let’s be real:
Singapore doesn’t have a “skills gap.”
We have an absorption gap.

🐹 Training providers keep selling more courses.
🐹 Policymakers keep issuing more funding.
🐹 Jobseekers keep running harder.

But the wheel was never designed to get you anywhere.

Certificates keep stacking.
Jobs don’t grow.
Wages don’t move.
And we keep clapping for “record enrolments” like that’s progress.

Issuing more certificates without fixing hiring practices,
without opening up market concentration,
without actually creating new roles —
is just running faster on the same wheel.

The system isn’t broken.
It’s working exactly as designed —
to keep you busy, not to get you employed.

📌 Stop fetishizing certificates.
📌 Start demanding accountability from training providers and policymakers.
📌 Engineer real pathways to absorption, mobility, and dignity in work.

Teenagers. Wah, sometimes I really wonder... 
Are they born to test our patience or our emotional fitness level?

You care too much, they say you nag.
You step back, they say you don’t care.

So what’s the secret?

After years of coaching teens (and their parents and being parent myself), 
I realised...

It’s not about winning the conversation.
It’s about keeping the connection.

They don’t want you to fix their problem.
They want to know you’ll stay even when they slam the door.

Coaching them is like holding a kite.
If you pull too tight, it breaks.
If you let go too much, it flies away.

So what to do?

Hold steady.
Trust the wind.
And sometimes… just buy bubble tea and listen quietly. 🧋

Because teenagers aren’t hard to love...
They’re just learning how to be loved differently. 💛

Jesus asked...
🌾 “Were not all 10 cleansed? Where are the other 9?”

That line hit me hard.

10 people were healed.
Only 1 turned back to say thank you.

And that one was a foreigner...
the least expected to return.

Are we expressing Gratitude enough in our life?

In that short exchange, Jesus didn’t just highlight healing.

He revealed something deeper about human nature...
 our tendency to forget gratitude once we get what we prayed for.

We say,
“God, help me get this job.”
“Please let this deal go through.”
“Let my loved one recover.”

And when it happens, we celebrate the result... but forget the source.

We move on to the next goal, the next crisis, the next prayer.
Gratitude fades into routine.

Similarly, being in HR is a thankless job.

You’re the one who hires.. 
but also the one who fires.

The one who listens, but can’t always fix.

The one who plans team bonding...
yet sits out when things go wrong.

When things run smoothly, no one notices.

When one thing breaks, everyone blames HR and who other but HR?

You celebrate others’ promotions but rarely get thanked for making them possible.

You protect the culture quietly, while others get the spotlight.

It’s ironic,  the “people” department often gets the least empathy.

So if you’re in HR and tired, unseen, or doubting your impact..

Know this: you’re the backbone that keeps the workplace human.

Even if they don’t say it,
you’re the reason people stay.

Here... in the Bible,
The story of the minister and the king’s dogs captures this perfectly.
The dogs remembered 10 days of kindness.
The king forgot 10 years of loyalty.

Many workplaces mirror this today:
We reward short-term wins but forget long-term faithfulness.

We celebrate outcomes but overlook effort.
We thank clients more than we thank colleagues.

But gratitude isn’t weakness.
It’s awareness.
It’s leadership.
It’s remembering who helped you become who you are today.

So today, pause and ask yourself:
💭 Who are the “unthanked” people in your life right now?
The mentor who believed in you?
The teammate who stayed late?
The parent who sacrificed quietly?

Maybe it’s time to be the one who turns back.

Because while faith heals,
gratitude saves.

Two hundred.

And someone dares to call him the victim?

No.
He’s not the victim.
He’s the murderer.

The victim is the girl 
who will never wake up again.

The parents who will never stop crying.
The friends who will never stop asking why.

Yes, he’s underage.
Yes, the law must take its course.
But don’t insult justice by twisting sympathy.

When we start calling killers “victims,”
we lose our moral compass.

This is not empathy.
This is insanity.

Maybe lawyer should be on the death penalty? After all he killed the law.

So moral of story when running do consider the use of negative keywords to prevent such embarrassing situations from happening to your company. In this case "dog" need to set as negative keyword.
