The Economist’s article argues that the next evolution of the web will prioritize machines over humans, realizing Tim Berners-Lee’s 1999 vision of intelligent agents automating tasks like planning and information retrieval.

Current web iterations (Web1 static, Web2 interactive, #Web3 decentralized) remain human-centric, requiring manual clicking and browsing. Advances in #AI, particularly large language models (LLMs), are enabling autonomous agents that not only generate text but act—booking flights, managing emails, or shopping—via tools and integrations.

Key emerging standards include:
•  Anthropic ’s Model Context Protocol (MCP) → standardizes agent-service communication.
•  Google ’s Agent-to-Agent (A2A) → enables inter-agent negotiation.
•  Microsoft ’s Natural Language Web (NLWeb) → allows natural-language site interactions.

Major firms formed the Agentic AI Foundation to develop open standards.
Agents could vastly expand online activity by processing information at superhuman speeds and parallelism. However, challenges persist: inconsistent #APIs, security risks like prompt injection, errors, and resistance from incumbents protecting ad-driven models.

Economically, this shifts value from human attention to “agent attention,” potentially disrupting advertising giants. Despite risks, the piece is optimistic: a machine-first web could transform efficiency, redefining the internet’s foundation through collaborative industry efforts.

In my view, this new machine-readable, agentic web heralds the true arrival of #Web 4.0—the intelligent, symbiotic era where AI agents autonomously negotiate, transact, and optimize at scale. 

It will likely accelerate Web 4 development by standardizing inter-agent protocols, propelling us beyond human-limited interactions. Economically, autonomous agents could add trillions to global #GDP through hyper-efficient #trade, automated #investments, and productivity surges, reshaping  markets and favoring early adopters. 

However, to sustain #trust in high-value agent-driven transactions, #blockchain integration for verifiable decentralization and quantum-proof cryptography (e.g., post-quantum algorithms like lattice-based signatures) are essential to safeguard against #future #quantum threats. 

Without these, the new WWW risks fragility amid explosive growth. Blockchain’s trusted architecture ensures accountability by providing immutable ledgers for every agent interaction, enabling real-time traceability and dispute resolution in automated #ecosystems. Its auditability will allow regulators and users to verify transactions without intermediaries, reducing fraud in a machine-dominated web. Finally, this paves the way for decentralized finance (#DeFi) at unprecedented scale, where agents execute smart contracts for global lending, trading, and asset management, democratizing access while minimizing systemic risks through distributed consensus.

Key highlights of UNESCO’s engagement:
•  Artificial Intelligence: Designated as the G20’s privileged partner for AI in 2025, UNESCO provided expertise on ethical AI governance, human-rights-centered approaches, and measures to build public trust in AI systems.
•  Culture and Linguistic Diversity: UNESCO actively supported the G20 Culture Ministers’ track, emphasizing cultural heritage and linguistic diversity. It spotlighted the International Decade of Indigenous Languages (2022–2032) during the Culture Working Group meeting in October 2025.
•  Sustainable and Inclusive Development: UNESCO aligned its contributions with the summit’s sustainability focus, underlining the essential role of culture, education, and language in achieving inclusive, equitable, and sustainable progress.
•  Capacity Building: UNESCO offered training programs for public-sector leaders and administrations on AI ethics and governance to strengthen institutional capacities for the future.
UNESCO’s participation reinforced the integration of ethical #AI, #cultural diversity, and #education into the G20’s broader agenda for global solidarity and sustainable development.

In my opinion the G20 Johannesburg Summit offered a valuable opportunity to further highlight the potential of deep-tech cultural diplomacy. A hybrid approach between traditional methods, and the thoughtful integration of AI, digital twinning, immersive technologies, blockchain, and advanced language models can greatly enhance our efforts to safeguard cultural treasures.
Combining cultural expertise with responsible innovation, would allow heritage to remain vibrant and alive, while fostering greater intercultural understanding.

Intelligence Report on Quantum Diplomacy in Action 2025–2026
(Geneva, October 2025 – Third Edition)

This third edition, produced under the patronage of #Switzerland and GESDA - Geneva Science and Diplomacy Anticipator  with contributions from UNESCO , CERN -hosted Open Quantum Institute (OQI), ILO, UNIDIR and many others, sounds an urgent yet hopeful alarm: fault-tolerant quantum computing (FTQC) is now realistically expected within the coming decade and will profoundly reshape economy, #security, #labour markets and #global #equity.

Key findings:
1.  Technology & Economic Maturity Quantum advantage in real-world applications is projected by ~2030. Global public investment has reached ≈$40 billion (mid-2024), yet private funding slowed in 2023. Market size is ~$870 m (2024) → $5 bn by 2030, with potential $180 bn economic value added.

2.  The Widening Quantum Divide Quantum infrastructure, funding and talent remain heavily concentrated in the Global North. UNESCO’s 2025 global survey shows 32 % of institutions have zero quantum facilities and 84 % of countries experience net talent outflow or stagnation. Without deliberate action, quantum risks amplifying existing digital and development divides.

3.  Future of Labour Quantum + AI + automation convergence could restructure value chains, especially in pharmaceuticals, materials, energy and finance. Anticipatory upskilling toward “quantum literacy” and cross-disciplinary competence is essential by 2030.

4.  Global Security & Cryptography “Harvest-now, decrypt-later” attacks already underway. Transition to post-quantum cryptography (PQC) is the most urgent priority; QKD remains complementary for specific high-security links. NIST finalised first PQC standards in 2024; migration must accelerate.

5.  SDG Applications OQI has supported 19 multidisciplinary use cases targeting health (new antibiotics, drug metabolism), water (leak detection, aquifer modelling), food security, and climate (weather forecasting, carbon capture). A rigorous multi-phase methodology from ideation → proof-of-concept, with donated cloud access, is yielding the first small-scale NISQ-era results.

The report closes with a global Call to Action (Annex V) urging all stakeholders — from hardware makers to policymakers — to commit portions of resources (10 % proposed) to inclusive, peaceful and sustainable quantum development, ensuring the second quantum revolution serves humanity and the planet rather than deepening division.

Day 1 centered on the theme of fostering prosperity and stability in an increasingly complex digital age, with a particular focus on #artificialintelligence, #quantum technologies, and supply chain #security.

Ministers engaged in in-depth discussions on Artificial Intelligence (AI), emphasizing strengthened #governance, cross-border collaboration, and reducing barriers to adoption—especially for small and medium-sized enterprises. 
They also underscored the strategic role of AI in transforming public services. 

Quantum technologies featured prominently, building on commitments made at the Kananaskis Leaders’ Summit. Ministers explored the next generation of #quantum #computing and reinforced the shared vision for collaborative innovation in critical emerging technologies.

Coordinated diplomatic engagement ensures interoperable standards, trusted supply chains, and ethical alignment across borders. It also mitigates geopolitical fragmentation by fostering transparent governance, shared risk-management frameworks, and secure data flows. Without deep tech diplomacy, technological asymmetries and dependency risks could undermine sovereignty, destabilize markets, and widen global inequities. Effective diplomacy enables nations to co-create resilient, secure, and future-ready innovation #ecosystems.

Humanoid Robotics Ecosystems are entering a decisive inflection point, driven by global demographic shifts, rapid technological convergence, and escalating investment flows that position humanoid systems as fundamental assets for economic stability, social resilience, and long-term human development. 
Morgan Stanley Research has suggested the humanoid robotics market could surpass USD 5 trillion by 2050.
By 2050, the world will experience one of the most dramatic demographic shifts in human history, defined by rapid population aging and shrinking workforces across many regions. Global projections indicate that the number of people aged 60 and over will exceed 2 billion—representing more than 20 percent of humanity—while the population aged 65 and above will reach approximately 1.5 billion. During the same period, the working-age population will either stagnate or decline in most high-income and middle-income countries, reshaping economic and labor dynamics. Old-age dependency ratios are expected to climb steeply. These shifts imply that in many countries, the number of older adults supported by each worker will nearly double, with some nations approaching a near one-to-one ratio between retirees and employees. 
As populations age, fertility rates decline, and economically active workforces contract across multiple regions, governments and industries increasingly recognize that large-scale deployments of humanoid robots will be required to sustain productivity, uphold essential public services, and safeguard social cohesion. Early deployments are already demonstrating the strategic relevance of these technologies for both advanced and emerging economies.

Wolfgang Holzgreve, Prof. Dr. med. Dr. h.c. mult. MBA is a respected Board of Trustees member of The Health Captains Club, serving as Chair of Healthcare Management Program at the University of St. Gallen, Switzerland.
He is a globally renowned gynecologist, researcher, and a University Hospital CEO. He served as Professor and Head of the Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology at the University of Basel from 1995 to 2008, followed by his role as Chief Medical Officer and CEO of the University Hospital Bonn from 2012 to 2024, during which he guided the hospital to become a financially successful, research-intensive center of excellence. In 2022, he was elected Chairman of the Supervisory Board of Leipzig University Hospital.
With over 600 scientific publications, numerous patents, editorial responsibilities, multiple awards—including the Thieme Management Award “Manager of the Year 2023” and the German Federal Cross of Merit, First Class—and six honorary doctorates (Dr. h.c. mult.), his contributions to prenatal medicine and hospital management are pioneering and internationally recognized.
