Swimming in data yet thirsting for insights:

Sometimes I meet companies that are working to build a data lake or a data warehouse that will include all the company’s data. Once this solution is done, it will hold the data and the answers to all the company’s problems.

It will hold web traffic, supply chain, customer complaints, reviews, testimonials, production planning, scrap, financial data and the list goes on and on.

It's meant to capture even data without a current purpose, clinging to the saying that "it's better to have it and not need it, than to need it and not have it."

As this promised data lake eventually fills in, I am then told that “We have a lot of data but we don’t know how to use it”.

This happens because, when data is not collected with a predefined purpose in mind, we do not have the certainty that we collect it at the right level of granularity, with the right frequency and under the right format. 

So, when we eventually find a use case down the line, we might end up concluding that we need to redo the data collection to fit our use case.

There is always a cost of opportunity associated with any effort we do. Rather than spending money and collecting customer complaints data when there is no pressing customer churn problem, we’d better analyze the piling inventories that tie up valuable cash.
