I was an Attorney Advisor with the National Commission on Military, National, and Public Service, which was created by Congress to review the military selective service process and consider ways to increase service by all Americans. The Commission had a broad, aspirational mandate: to develop ideas that will foster a greater ethos of military, national, and public service among Americans of all ages and, in the process, strengthen our democracy. Over the course of about two years, the Commission sought to ignite a national conversation around service and inspire more Americans to serve. We stood down in 2020.

We met for two hours/ week during the semester, in the first year meeting with practitioners in the field of law and in the second year working on a project with a concrete deliverable (like a publication/ conference). I know undocumented immigrants. 

They are friends, fellow citizens, employees and employers.

They are family.

Some of them live paycheck to paycheck and some of them are wealthy businessmen winning the capitalist wars. 

They are not "the other." This is not happening to "someone else."

And every day I am terrified someone will out them or call the cops on them or deport them or kill them. 

It is happening to children. 

It is happening to valid visa holders, asylum seekers legally in America, and the spouses of citizens.

It is happening to citizens.

But I care also that it is happening to every undocumented immigrant who has been ripped from their homes and their families and their lives. 

I care that they are being tortured and kept in prisons worse than POWs and being deported to countries they aren't from or countries that will kill them. 

Not because of what it indicates for a rise in fascism, or the fall of our democracy, or "who comes next." 

Not for our sake. 

But for their sake alone. 

They are human beings too. 

They are people many of us know, love, and protect. 

They deserve to be fought for as many of them have fought for us. 

They deserve to be fought for even if they aren't perfect, contributing to the economy, or critical workers. 

ICE, on the other hand, are racist monsters. 

Nearly a quarter of people held in solitary in detention are Black, even though Black migrants make up less than 4% of ICE detainees. 

Solitary is torture and a violation of human rights law in developed countries.

People are getting deported to countries they have no ties to, money is changing hands, and that's legalized human trafficking.

And I am terrified to even post this, but I am doing it.

Fight for free speech.
