After serving for 3 consecutive years as an elected Senator I received 67% of the vote and was elected as our Student Body President; the first Asian-American Student Body President in the school's history. As Student Body President, I set the strategy for the 120-person student government and managed a $500,000 budget. I was a catalyst and facilitator of collaboration amongst students, administrators, and faculty members and led the  implementation of initiatives and programs in areas such as academic advising, student transportation, student athletic ticket policy, and student health and safety.

Had a great start to Day 2 of the HR Technology Conference & Exposition with a live conversation with Kyle Forrest for The Edge of Work podcast (more to come later this week)

13 years ago, I came across Alison Fragale's work when I was researching UNC Kenan-Flagler Business School's MBA program as a place to go for business school

A lot has happened since then but what hasn't wavered are the research and contributions she has made to the fields of negotiation, power and influence which has helped people (especially women) learn the tools and tactics they need to advance in the workplace. 

A big congrats to Alison who recently released her book Likeable Badass, How Women Get The Success They Deserve,  a book that contains a mix of science and story, frameworks and actionable practices to help navigate and advance in the workplace.

Three years ago, I made the leap from a great corporate career to becoming a full-time entrepreneur.

I’m grateful that I get to do this work each day running my leadership development practice, and for having a career that allows me to use the talents, skills, and tools that I enjoy each and every day.

During this time, I've leaned heavily on the lessons I learned working at the intersection of tech, leadership, and organizational change to build and grow my business, which has been rewarding and humbling.

In this article, I shared some reflections on my learnings from year three of my journey in building my leadership development consulting firm.

A question that comes up in some of my work with managers and leaders is about building connections in teams. This is true, regardless of where you're working. 

While big events and experiences can play a role, there are plenty of small intentional practices done well over time that make small deposits of connection that matter. In this video, I shared one of my favorite team practices that you can incorporate into your next team meeting.

Over the past few weeks, I’ve been traveling for events, leading leadership programs, and having numerous conversations with talent and business leaders.

What's better than New York in the Fall? 

New York in the Fall for the Charter Workplace Summit!

I'll be back in NY on October 8th for this year's summit and looking forward to  a great lineup of people whose work I enjoy like Massella Dukuly, Erin Grau, Grace Zuncic, Brian Elliott, Helen Lee Kupp, and Aneesh Raman.

The theme of this year's summit is the "New Leadership Playbook" and covers hot topics on the CEO-CHRO agenda, ranging from AI, Flexible Work, Election season and my personal favorite, the talent landscape.

Had a great time in New York at the Charter Workplace Summit.

It was great to see, connect, and learn with many leaders, colleagues and friends across the talent and people ecosystem. 

I've got a longer article in the works about the event but here are a few of my quick highlights:

1) Loved running into so many The Edge of Work podcast guests (Looking at you Angela Cheng-Cimini 鄭婷婷, Melissa Daimler, Rodney Evans, David Landman, Brian Elliott) not to mention all of the great people I've met virtually over the past few years through the podcast. Podcasting has many benefits, especially with being able to meet other great people

2) Going to events with diverse pockets of the broader workplace ecosystem has a lot of value - it's important to see the interconnectivity of the different lanes - It was really interesting to talk to people about universal topics (Artificial Intelligence, skills, hybrid work) but to hear perspectives from others like researchers, professors, workforce development professionals, consultants, business leaders as well as talent and HR leaders. Most of the solutions require systems thinking approaches, so hearing these perspectives is critical

3) If you want great ideas about what makes a great leader, just ask some kids. The Charter team filmed videos asking kids about what they think greater leaders are and do. The videos were poignant (adorable) but simple reminders that while leadership is nuanced, complex and challenging, what's needed is often right in front of us.

4) A core theme of the day as it relates to AI and work is the importance of being human, and in increasingly tech driven world, the fact that humans matter. This is not a new narrative, we've been saying this for some time, but it was to hear from the likes of Aneesh Raman, Manuela Veloso and others more specifics on what tactically that looks like (skills, behaviors, examples) to keep pushing this narrative forward.
