Selling vs Providing Value:

A question from a content creator this morning...

"Read your one email a day post and I'm intrigued. But how do we balance selling vs providing value in our emails? I have a lot to share, and obviously I want to make money, but I'm worried about annoying people."

This is probably the #1 thing that holds people back from sending more regular emails. Especially content creators who already have a following.

But here's the thing...

If you're talking about something that matters to the reader?

Providing insights from personal experience?

You ARE providing value.

The "selling" part is just rolling out the red carpet and inviting them to work with you, if they want more help.

Example:

Most people are on my list for email marketing and copywriting content. I talk about those topics, then invite people to work with me if they want more help.

When I talk about those things, response rate and sales shoot up.  When I don't talk about those things, response rate and sales drop.

I'm "providing value" by talking about something that matters to the reader.

I'm "selling" by giving them the opportunity to reach out for more help.

And I do this every day.

Another example:

One of my clients, Matt Barker, is a LinkedIn stud with 140k+ followers.

He spent 2 years "providing value" and building up his audience.  But didn't have his email sales machine dialed in.

We put together a cohort-based course and sold 19 spots into the first group, just by inviting people on his list.

The funnel was email -> Google Doc -> checkout page.

That's it.

Now he's creating an email flow to sell his course, cohort, and 1:1 offers consistently.

And staying in the flow with more regular emails.

So, the TL;DR version of this post...

You can provide value AND sell every day. It doesn't need to be either or.

Talk about something that matters to the reader and provide insight from personal experience.

Then invite them to work with you if they want more help.

Don't believe most of what you see on social.

The amount of times a self-proclaimed "700-figure entrepreneur" has asked me for a discount, haggled on price, or requests a refund on a $27 product is hilarious.

They love to posture and play rich boi until the bill comes 💅

The easiest way to make big money relatively fast: 
 
Solve painful problems for people with money. 
 
Avoid the business of helping losers win. 
 
Be in the business of helping winners win more.

A note to my marketing friends:

Want to make more money and sell your stuff easier?

Stop selling to internet marketers.

In my experience — unless you’re an elite Donald Trump level marketer… or you’re selling a “new business opportunity”...

Selling to other internet marketers is the hardest path to take.

Here’s why:

The bulk of internet marketers are beginners who dream of making millions.

They read the Russell Brunson.  The Gary Halbert.  The Dan Kennedy.  The Eugene Schwartz.

If they’re reallyyy serious, maybe even some James Clear Atomic Habits lol.

The difference is internet marketers have a voracious appetite for more and “new”.

Even after inhaling new info, they are immediately hungry for that new new.

(Ask me how I know…)

They’re a sophisticated market that expects a lot for a little, and they want it FAST.

I guess you can say this applies to a lot of markets.  As humans we all want the best results with the least risk in the shortest time.

But internet marketers are unique because of their appetite for NEW.

If you look at an older industry like Real Estate, sure there are new things that come around here and there.  But the process of buying and selling homes has largely been the same for many years.

There's no new funnel every 2 weeks.

So… what’s the point of sharing this?

I see a lot of marketers struggling to sell their stuff.

This post is the reason why.

If you're selling to other marketers, you're playing the game on HARD MODE.

You’ll be expected to produce new stuff all the time, even if new doesn’t benefit the customer.  And if your target customer knows as much or more than you, why would they buy from you?

The easier path is to apply your skills to an old or emerging industry who isn’t skilled in what you do.  Ideally an industry you have an interest or experience in.

Hormozi did this by helping personal trainers and gyms.

I did this when I applied my sales and marketing skills to help early-stage SaaS companies.

I have a client who helps service pros create their own franchise/licensing programs.

Another who’s a tax specialist that works with folks making $200k+ a year.

As Dan Kennedy once said when asked about his favorite clients:

“I like slow learners with deep pockets.”

Lol, always gives me a chuckle.

Anyway… I know this post is about marketers.  But it could apply to any industry where you're finding it hard to sell and feel pressure of having to create "new" stuff so often.

My version of the one email a day lifestyle:

- Wake up at 6am.

- Kiss my wife.

- Give my pup Whiskey a few scritches.

- Quick 5min stretch.

- Drink 16oz water.

- Pop some supplements.

- Grab an Americano with an extra shot of espresso.

- Sit down at my desk and turn on some TSwift.

- Put 60mins on the timer and write my daily email.

- 10min break. Walk around, do some pull ups and push ups.

- Turn the timer on for 120min and do some deep work.

- Check into WhatsApp and answer client questions.

- Take any client calls.

- Take Whiskey out for a 30min walk.

- Make a protein shake with some sardines and rice.

- More client calls.

- More deep work on marketing or product.

- Plan the next day and sign off.

- Walk to the gym for 1.5 hours of BJJ.

- Eat dinner.

- Hangout with my wife and Whiskey.

- Read for 30mins.

- Watch some NetFlix.

- Hit the sack around 10:30 - 11:00.

I wrote.

Made money.

Moved my body.

Loved my family.

Ate clean.

Had time outside.

Had time alone.

Increased physical and mental strength.

It's a simple and fantastic lifestyle for me.

Made possible by one email a day!

The beauty is… the one email a day lifestyle can be whatever you make it.

Build an email list around something you're good at. Send one email a day and sell stuff to your list that adds value to their life. Get paid.

That's the business model.

When you do this... you have the freedom to make your day look however you want.

Oooo yeaa!  With the help of ChatGPT, just wrote up a (hopefully) banger sales letter in a couple hours.

If you feed the machine the right questions/prompts it can get you 90% of the way there.  The remaining 10% was adding flow and making it sound like a human wrote it (and a little bit of spice, of course).

"Useful/helpful > Valid/right."

I have that written down on one of my sticky notes.

What does it mean?

The goal with my content is for it to be useful/helpful.

It's to deliver insights, from personal experience, that can help people to think differently.

Sometimes it ruffles feather and offends people.  Because I'm direct in the delivery and tell it like it is.

That's OK.  I'm not trying to please everyone.  And I don't argue with people who push back.  Because arguing falls into the bucket of trying to be valid/right.

All that matters to me is the RIGHT people find my content useful.  If that's the case, I'm happy.

So, ask yourself...

Are you trying to be useful/helpful?  Or are you trying to win arguments to prove you are valid/right?

Something to chew on.

P.S. - this is me in Japan.  If you like food, you need to go.

If your "perfect business" is: 
 
- managing a big team 
- working 100 hour weeks 
- sales calls upon sales calls 
- generating big revenue but taking home tiny profits 
 
Then keep your business. 
 
I'll take the lean green profit machine any day.

Try sending a minimum of 3x emails a week this year. 
 
Even if you feel you're not a good writer. 
 
Worst case scenario? 
 
You're a better writer, have 111 emails, a library of content, and new data/insights to use moving forward. 
 
Best case scenario? 
 
You make bank and have the marketing+sales engine for a million dollar or more business. 
 
37 weeks left in 2024. 
 
No reason not to go for it 🤙

If something offends you, there is likely some truth to it. 
 
Amateurs get defensive and argue over who's right. 
 
Pros are grateful and use it as an opportunity to spot their weak points. 
 
The choice is yours.

"Really enjoyed reading this cold email."
"The copywriting on this is amazing.  Great job."
"Wow what an ad, the best I've seen in a long time!"

If you're writing direct response copy... anything other than action being taken means you've failed.

Remember you're not writing for claps.  You're writing for conversions.

Best way to get fantastic clients is to be a fantastic client.  It's the only 'tactic' you need.

- If you're a ghoster, you'll attract ghosters.
- If you're a cheapo serial refunder, you'll attract cheapo serial refunders.
- If you're a can kicking time waster, you'll attract can kicking time wasters.

It's the mirror effect.  No one talks about this!

Be the client you want to attract.

The insufferable A.I. comments here singlehandedly pulled me out of a 5-month YouTube slump.  Bullish on video because you can't A.I. it (yet).

If you're not on video, start doing video.
If you're already doing video, keep going and do what A.I. can't do.

Make engagement real again.

My rule with marketing and selling is simple: 
 
Don't do shid that would annoy me if done to me. 
 
I have a personal swipe file of things I buy and reverse engineer the process.  Works wonders, and you learn a lot by paying attention to your own behavior.
