Everyone wants to be a visionary.
Few want to ship.

There's an old idea from Steve Jobs:
the difference between dreamers and doers.

He said it best in a 1995 interview:

"The difference between the dreamers and the people that build stuff is the dreamers talk about what they're going to build. The people that build stuff actually ship."

I've watched this pattern play out for years:

→ Founders perfecting pitch decks while competitors take market share
→ Teams spending 6 months on strategy while missing whole product cycles
→ Leaders talking big changes but scared to ship anything

I get it. I've done this more times than I can count.

Shipping something unfinished feels vulnerable.
What if it's not good enough?
What if people don't get it?

But here's what separates builders from talkers:

Dreamers talk about what they're going to build.

Doers build it.
Then they improve it.
Then they ship again.

Vision without execution is entertainment.
Execution without vision is labor.

But when both combine, that's when companies are built.
Right now, this gap is growing wider.

It's easier than ever to look like you're building:

Announcing ideas.
Branding ideas.
Explaining ideas.

But builders? They move different.

Artists ship.

But investors are using it.
Boards are using it.
Journalists are using it.

Before they wire money, book you, or quote you, they check your AI summary.

AI doesn't build your reputation from your best work.
It builds it from what it can find.

80% of sources cited in AI summaries aren't top-ranking authority sites.

The machine isn't pulling from the strongest version of you.
It's pulling from digital scraps:

Before, someone would read your work.
Now they read a summary.
That summary becomes the shortcut.

ChatGPT now has 800 million weekly users.
It receives 2.5 billion prompts per day. 
AI search traffic is up 500%+ year over year.
Half of Google searches now show AI summaries.

AI does not study you.
It looks for patterns.

What you repeat.
What you build.
What others link you to.

Then it produces a description.
If your work points in one direction, the description is strong.
If you mix up your work, the description becomes weak.

AI reflects what you have produced.

Those summaries shape:

Who gets invited.
Who gets considered.
Who gets funded.
Who gets ignored.

Change is scary.
Starting over is scarier.

The higher you climb in your business or career,
the middle is where things feel shaky.

The habits that got you where you are
stop working.

Execution matters less.
Judgment matters more.
Information stops flowing up to you.

Decisions start flowing down from you.
The role you were trained for disappears.
A different one takes its place.

That moment shows up in nature too.

The messy part of metamorphosis happens in the middle.
Not when the caterpillar crawls.
Not when the butterfly emerges.

The middle stage.

Inside the chrysalis, the caterpillar dissolves.
The body breaks down into a kind of biological soup.
The old structure disappears before the new one forms.

For a period of time, the organism is neither what it was
nor what it will become.

Biologists call this stage imaginal development.

Specialized cells begin organizing the structure of the butterfly while the old system dissolves.

The transformation does not happen by adding wings.
It happens by dismantling the old body first.

That pattern shows up in work.
A role stops fitting.
A title that once made sense starts to feel narrow.

The structure that carried you to this point begins to break down.
The next structure has not formed yet.

From the outside, this phase can look unstable.
From the inside, it often feels the same.
But many forms of growth pass through this stage.

Researchers who study metamorphosis describe it as breakdown followed by reorganization.

One identity pauses before the next one takes shape.

People tend to watch three signals during that period:

1/ does the person cling to the old structure
2/ does the new direction begin to take shape
3/ does the work continue during the transition

That is what shapes judgment.

When a role or title stops fitting, decide fast:
what still applies
what no longer does

Then keep moving.

The old structure dissolves.
The next one forms through the work.
The middle stage always looks uncertain.

That does not mean the process is failing.
It means the change has already begun.

The most dangerous belief you can carry online is the one you learned as a child.
I didn’t realize that until I started reading The Courage to Be Disliked by Ichiro Kishimi and Fumitake Koga.

I didn’t expect it to hit me the way it did.

At first it reads like a quiet conversation between a philosopher and a young man arguing about life.
But somewhere in the middle of those pages, something uncomfortable shows up.

A simple idea:

You are not trapped by your past.
Not your childhood.
Not your experiences.

Not the stories you’ve been repeating about yourself for years.
Most of us grow up believing the opposite.
We carry sentences from childhood into adulthood like permanent labels:

“I’m not the type who speaks up.”
“I’m not good on camera.”
“I’m not great with technology.”
“I’m not someone people listen to.”

They feel like facts.
They’re not facts.
They’re decisions.

And the moment you try to build something online, those decisions start showing up everywhere.

You hesitate before posting.
You rewrite a sentence ten times because you're worried how it will sound.
You wait for the perfect moment, the perfect idea, the perfect confidence.

Days turn into months.

Meanwhile, someone else, sometimes with less experience, simply presses “post.”
Someone just like you. 
But less attached to being liked.

To be free, you have to accept something uncomfortable:

Some people will misunderstand you.
Some will disagree with you.
Some will dislike you.

And that’s not failure.

It’s the cost of staying honest with yourself.

The same rule applies online.
The people who build audiences, businesses, and influence on the internet are rarely the ones with the most perfect ideas.
They’re the ones who stopped letting old beliefs decide what they’re allowed to do.

They stopped asking:

“What will people think?”
And started asking:
“What do I believe?”

Something interesting happens when you do that.

Communicating becomes easier
You get better ideas 
And people start recognizing themselves in what you say.

Not everyone will agree.
The right people will pay attention.

Most people online aren’t held back by skill.
They’re held back by the story they believe about themselves.

The book calls this courage.
Online, it often looks like someone finally pressing “post.”

My first job was taking takeout orders at Pizza Hut.
I'd just moved to the US and honestly...

I was so scared every time that phone rang.

My English felt shaky
my confidence even shakier. 

Years later, I was standing next to a newly
elected congressman in a room full of reporters.

needed to hear something I wish I could tell her now:

Trust yourself.

here's what I'd tell that younger me:

Long games beat quick wins
Build skills that pay off over time. 
Learn from those 5 steps ahead of you. 
Create work that sustains you, not just what looks good on paper.

Tested expertise over looking impressive  
It's better to be great at something than decent at everything. 
Stay curious when others get bored. 

That's where you find your edge.

Inner life over external approval
Know what you value. 
Make decisions from there. 

Stop constantly checking if everyone thinks you're doing it right.

Honestly, when you trust yourself, you become your best version.
You stop second-guessing every decision 
and start building from confidence instead of fear.

I remember something a cameraman told me when I was an intern.
“If you don’t make it by 27, you’re done in television.”

I laughed when he said it.

But I carried that sentence for years.

Every birthday after 27 felt like borrowed time.

I kept proving myself.
Chasing breaking news.
Getting on trains before sunrise.

I had my first child at 27.

His early years passed in train stations and newsrooms.
Running toward stories.
Running past bedtime.

I loved the work.
Years in newsrooms, newspapers, radio, and television production.

But I missed more than I expected.
Years passed.

Then I turned 40.
I had my second child.

And life shifted.
Work changed.
Home needed more from me.

And that old sentence came back.

“If you don’t make it by 27, you’re done in television.”
Now the voice in my head sounded different.

"No one will hire you now.
You stepped away.
You’re older.
You have a baby at home.”

For a moment, I believed it.

Then another thought came.

If no one will hire me…
I will hire myself.

And start building something of my own.
I’ve watched other people do the same.

A surgeon burned out at 52.
She left medicine.
Now she runs a food business from her kitchen.
Her waitlist is three months long.

A corporate attorney who hadn’t painted since college started selling her work during COVID.
She made more in year one than her last year at the firm.

A woman with 18 years in pharmaceutical sales moved to Portugal with her kids.
She consults from her laptop.
Less stress.
More time with them.

People thought they lost their minds.
They found their lives.

And that’s the strange thing about starting over.

Others may think your story is finished.
But you’re the one who decides when it ends.

Don’t be afraid to start again.
You might like the next chapter better.

I was reading about peace negotiations this week.
One statistic stuck with me.

When women are involved in negotiations, peace agreements last longer.
Yet women make up only 10% of peace negotiators worldwide.

Today is International Women’s Day.
And right now there are 61 active conflicts in the world, the most since World War II.

Think about that for a second.

25 years ago, the UN passed Resolution 1325…
A binding commitment to include women in peace and security decisions.

Not a guideline.
Not a goal.
A legal obligation.

It created a framework to:

→ Prevent conflict and gender-based violence
→ Protect women and girls in conflict settings
→ Include women in peace negotiations and decision-making
→ Guarantee relief and recovery after conflict ends

25 years later, the gap is hard to ignore.

→ Less than 1% of peacebuilding funding goes to gender equality
→ Women peacebuilders face threats, surveillance, and violence

Peace negotiations are shaped by power, interests, and geopolitics.

But the evidence increasingly shows that inclusion also affects whether agreements endure.

When women are involved in peace negotiations, agreements hold longer.
The UN’s own research shows it.

Across regions.
Across cultures.
Across conflicts.

So the problem isn’t the evidence.
It’s that the systems where peace is negotiated still struggle to include the people most affected by conflict.

Peace has always been political.
And who builds peace decides what it becomes.

I’m writing this from the US, a country with veto power on the UN Security Council, and one where debates over women’s rights remain unresolved.

Tomorrow, CSW70 opens at the UN in New York.

World leaders will be in the room discussing peace and security.

Meanwhile, women in conflict zones are still fighting simply to be included in the negotiations shaping their futures.

One initiative drawing attention to this is the Global Petition: No Peace Without Women, calling on the UN Secretary-General and the Security Council to enforce Resolution 1325, not just reference it.

10,000 signatures are needed before March 19.

The current count is 3,665.
