Communications, Events & Student Leadership Assistant

I am currently working as a Media and Communications Apprentice at Ryburn Valley High School. This is to earn my Junior Content Producer Level 3 qualification. As well as my job role, I have been attending college sessions with The Juice Academy in Manchester and completing assignments set by Apprentify, all leading up to my final assessment.

In my position at the school, no two days are the same and I have greatly developed my skillset. I have helped coordinate Open Evenings and careers events. I write long and short form copy across social media, the website and the newsletter adapting to the school’s tone of voice. I actively work to regularly identify events and opportunities across the school and create content around them to schedule using Hootsuite for our social media platforms, as well as adapting content to put on the website which is hosted on Squarespace. This has developed stronger relationships with members of teaching staff and the Senior Leadership Team. 

In growing as a photographer and videographer, I have also built up my editing skills in the adobe suite. I have used Lightroom and Photoshop to enhance images and correctly size them for social media and web. In taking responsibility for feedback and careers interviews, I have been able edit multiple projects in Premier Pro and have noticed improvement in my ability over time. I have also used Indesign to create printed media such as event posters, signage and postcards.

In the Juice Academy, I have taken part in sessions delivered by industry professionals from Tangerine marketing agency. Subjects have included, pitching, SEO, Adobe suite, copywriting, branding and many more. Combined with being part of a multi-facetted team, I have taken on board lots of advice and lessons to secure myself a future in the creative industry.

As Social Media and Networking Assistant, I would use my creativity to generate content with the goal of promoting the company’s services and draw in potential clients. I managed and posted across Facebook, Instagram, and LinkedIn - which I took responsibility for setting up myself. I wrote copy for the social media posts, job advertisements, and I worked closely with the marketing and website assistant, often proofreading and amending copy for email campaigns and the company website. I taught myself how to use Affinity Design, so that I may produce my own assets for social media. I gained experience generating and monitoring paid social media ads. Using LinkedIn, I conducted a lead generation campaign in a bid to bring in new clients. I took it upon myself to find and attend online networking events, where I verbally expressed the company’s services and the kinds of clientele we were looking to add to our business network. Following these events, I used my written communication skills to reach out to other attendees on LinkedIn and enquire as to whether or not their businesses could benefit from our services. I researched relevant trends and used the information gathered to write blog posts for use on the website.

As a sales associate, I worked diligently as part of a team to fulfil the various roles required of me. I enjoyed operating the tills as I was able to engage with customers and build up a rapport with them. Whilst on the shop floor re-stocking shelves or working on displays, I would always be on hand to assist customers and answer their questions about our products. Working in the processing room and handling deliveries taught me more about brand awareness and how the company purchases its products to stock in-store. Due to Covid-19, we took extra safety measures to make sure that the customers could shop safely and I took an active role in making sure that these were done correctly. During my time at Homesense, I built professional relationships with store managers and the senior leadership team, I was confident in communicating with them if I was in need of advice or assistance.

As Office Manager at GIG retail my responsibilities include - Greeting clients and visitors to the office. Dealing with ad-hoc queries regarding the office and equipment. Stocking inventory and consumables. Managing staff kit and updating the asset tracker in MS Excel. Scanning for colleagues. Diary management. Organising room bookings in the calendar. I took on extra responsibilities managing and generating content for the company's social media platforms.

In order to gain additional work experience and contribute to my local community, I volunteered at my local Age UK charity shop over my Summer break from University. My main responsibilities included cash handling and till operation, maintaining presentation standards on the shop floor and developing relationships with customers. I also took it upon myself to start advertising some of the high-quality products through social media in an endeavour to increase sales and build the stores online presence. This proved successful and my manager was very appreciative of the extra effort.

During my second year of university, I developed and hosted my own radio show. It was an exciting challenge - I researched and determined the themes and topics that were discussed each week, I co-hosted the show, I managed the studio controls, and I promoted it through both the radio station’s and my own social channels.

 I kept up to date with news in the gaming, film and music industries to ensure that our content was always current. This experience helped me to develop my organisational skills because I had to manage my time between University coursework and planning the show each week. I had to ensure that I was fully prepared before each show, in case of any last-minute changes or technical issues.  

 My confidence and presentation skills developed greatly as the show progressed; I went from the feeling of simply speaking into a microphone in the studio, to presenting and engaging with a live audience.

My position at The White Lion was my first experience of working in the hospitality sector. It was a fast paced environment, with a variety of responsibilities, and I had to adapt quickly due to the nature of the role. The majority of my shifts were on busy Friday and Saturday nights, therefore I had to remain composed and work under pressure. I gained hands-on experience in serving and cultivating relationships with the general public, which greatly improved my people skills. I enhanced my teamwork and communication abilities by working together with other staff members to keep everything running smoothly. In addition, I often had to work independently and use my initiative to complete tasks.
