Hey! I'm Jack. 

Friends call me Snacky Jacky. 

I love it here on LinkedIn. I get to find new people to cheer on, learn more about people I care about, and stay educated.

I post Mon-Fri about agency life and my journey with Crohn's Disease.

I started my agency, Utopiads, in 2013 in Toronto. A lot of people ask why Toronto... there's no genius reason. That's just where my business partner was already located!

Over 11 years I grew the agency to 8-figure revenues and 7-figure profits. We've paid out more than $11 MM in revenue shares to client-sharing partners, too. 

But my proudest accomplishment is my team. I've never seen a band of rascals like them and I love them for life.

In my personal life, I'm a total enigma; in 2024, I sobbed at Taylor Swift twice and rocked at Annisokay (a metal band). I just love music and new experiences. 

When I'm well enough I like to play golf (badly) and work out 5x per week.

I’ve been off on a health break for most of 2024 dealing with my Crohn's Disease and other challenges. But I'm getting there and will be a new man in '25.

Mostly just posting this to prove to my accountant and HMRC I actually was working in Ibiza last week and this was valid biz expense 👀 

Boy have I missed being at agency conferences. It's been 18 months since my agency world was ripped away from me and I LOVED the buzz. Didn't have one bit of nerves or imposter syndrome walking into a new event of 250 strangers. 

Nothing to prove and everything to gain, I guess.

Mostly because 95% of agency community is GOOD. True souls who want to learn, help, and listen. 

Many LinkedIn friends became real life friends, including Ryan Hall who gave me such a long and kind squeeze I almost needed another bowel operation.

Take my new friend James Rose for example... I bumped into him as a perfect stranger between conference talks. I sat next to him on the step and next thing you know 2 hrs of deep talking have passed and we miss all afternoon sessions. He really listened and cared and we've become friends fast.

It would feel impossible to recap the whole thing and my many learnings in one post. Plus, I have 6 or 7 more pictures from the event. So I'll share them as and when the time feels right to connect the moments with lessons for y'all.

The moral of this one? Friends help friends. 

So get out there and make friends.

That's not in a devious or calculated sense... but if I've just met someone I really hit it off with and I like their story and mission... I'm obviously going to be compelled to help them in any way I can going forwards (connections, leads, advice, joint ventures). And the same would often be true in reverse.

Friends help friends. 

The right friends help you grow your agency and feel better about it all.

Prior to the call I was installing a new air con unit in my office, which I finished with literal seconds to spare. 

Zwei: 
So the picture behind me is wonky and I've got sawdust through my hair (I was boring a 300mm hole through the external wall). Ali enlightened me of neither of these issues bc she's too polite. 

Tre: 
We were having SUCH a nice chat about agency growth, the early years, and leadership. Then about 70 minutes in Ali sneak-attacked me with a question pivoting conversation toward my exit story.

That is why I say at the start of this clip my heart sank because I forgot that's what we were there to discuss, and I never wanted to leave my agency. Still hurts.

Throwback to BrightonSEO last year with my new friend Bobbi and old friend Craig (and yes, that's a fan I'm holding up my sweaty pits).

For this October's edition... 

I'm flying down Thursday lunch time bc I can't be arsed with a 6AM flight, and going back Saturday lunch time. 

Would anyone like to meet for a decaf earl grey with lacto-free milk and 1 brown sugar between sessions? Or for lunch? Or dinner Friday?

I also can't wait for the agency leader dinner with Mat and Kelly Thursday! 

Hope to see a bunch of you over the course of this event.

If you can't find me I'll be pretending to still understand data and code in various training sessions.

I dislike rigidity immensely. 

I started with 2 x new therapists this week and it brought this bug-bear front of mind. 

(I started with 2 bc I don't want to get 4-6 weeks in and realise I need to start again if we're not gelling)

So here's a legit account of the first new therapist this week: 

1. I fill out website form (the place recommended to me by my weekly vitamin IV infusion nurse... she asked how I was and after 8 mins of diatribe she said you sound traumatised get some help). 

2. They reply asking me to fill out various questionnaires and pay in advance. Fair enough. 

3. Five days later they call and TELL me my appointment is 3.30 on Mondays. Erm... a bit weird having no choice and this overlaps with nursery pick up, but I can attend the first one and sort it out later?

4. I arrive and they consumed the first 20 minutes of our strict 50-min session lecturing me on rules. Hardly fair? 

5. They told me it's an 8 week block for trauma fast-track, whatever that means. And if I can't attend 2 or more sessions, even with advance notice, I get canceled. 

6. They told me I can't switch to any other day or time.

what in the actual sheet is this? I have medical appointments, networking trips, a child to look after, and a chronic disease I can't control and sometimes can't leave the house because of. 

And they're gonna boot me off the therapy course even if I tell them 4 weeks in advance I can't make it and THEY won't rearrange??

I'm sorry, but you can just go and fork yourself. That's not the support I need and, objectively, not fair to any patient.

I understand they have processes and policies but I'm here begging for help, doing everything they've asked, and their rigidity is driving me away. 

NOW, take new therapist #2 this week: 

1. Got intro'd from a friend, filled out the website form. 

2. She called me rapidly, asked for a 15-min get-to-know-you session to see if we're a fit. 

3. Offered me a variety of slots for regular sessions. 

4. Said she'd consider giving me longer sessions if 1 hr doesn't feel like enough (a concern I expressed to her). 

5. She even said she'd fill out a form to get covered by my health insurer.

Soooo... take a wild guess which one I'm gonna be spending £100 a week with for the rest of my life?

That's a £5,200 a year outcome... and if I'm lucky enough to have another 30 years, perhaps even a £156,000 outcome.

And yes, I'm gonna link this realisation to our (agency) world, friends: 

Processes have their place. 

But we're service-based businesses just like therapists are. Matter of fact we play pseudo-therapist with half our marketing clients anyway... CMOs are never far from a breakdown!! 

I had non-negotiables in my agency like payment in advance and no credit cards (boings and fees), but I always drove home an accommodating ethos. 

So, just a reminder to check you're not alienating current or potential clients by being as stiff as therapist #1!

I'd struggle to name a more inspiring agency leader than Rebecca McIntyre-Smith. 

She has battled through three cancer diagnoses and bounced back to: be the MD of an incredible agency in Edinburgh; host a DEEP podcast; speak at major events; and do much to support others like being on committees for Marie Curie UK. And we're the same freaking age.

She's also been an incredible friend to me as someone who gets it, even sharing her therapist with me.

That is why when she flagged this charity event in Edinburgh to me I purchased a table.

I've given away half the seats already and would like to invite anyone else to join my wife and I at our table.

The table was £2,000 so with ten seats it's £200 per head. If you'd like to pay for your seat that's fine, or if you'd like to be my guest that's fine too. 

Either way we'll all be together for a lovely black-tie evening supporting the worthiest of causes.
