To get to the island, you must burn the boats.

My last day at Telstra Enterprise was 3 years ago today, and it was brutal.

From being recognised as a future leader of the business to redundant on the streets in less than 12 months.

Completely alone after 7 years of loyalty, overachievement and dedication.

From those moments I swore I'd never let another corporation hold power over me and my wellbeing ever again, 

and I have been building my freedom ever since.

This is a clip from my podcast The Binge Thinker where I talked through the history of my Tech Sales career from Day 1 to retiring earlier this year.

I share this video because under the fakeness of our professional identities there is so much pain and insecurity in the reality of redundancy.

Whilst people put up their "grateful" posts on their last day they're secretly terrified of where their next job might be,

under huge pressure to support themselves and their families,

and are furious that they've been put in this position 

after doing their best for a company that has cast them away for the sake of a dividend.

This is the cold reality that we're supposed to just 'suck up' to appease our corporate image.

I say f*ck that, I teach my students to take the corporate mask off and be a real person to their customers, 

so I take the mask off of how I've really felt to stay in my integrity.

The Big T strikes again.

Another 2800 jobs carved out of its already flailing Telstra Enterprise business.

I got made redundant from Telstra in 2021 almost exactly 3 years ago today, 
a long fall from the Top 1% performer I was recognised as just months before.

On the way out I noticed the changes they were making to the business and knew it was never going to be the same Telstra where I got my start in Tech Sales.

Telstra wanted to be a utility again, shrinking away from its ICT & services business in Enterprise where I was to focus on its new wholesale businesses.

I was there during SSU, the separation of its wholesale assets from the retail business.

On my last day they announced the setup of Amplitel and the 49% sale of the mobile assets.

Why? Because it's much cheaper to manage pipes and towers than people.

Over the last 3 years I've seen that strategy come to fruition from the outside and felt compelled to share this, speak my truth,

and to help anyone that's been affected by these looming redundancies.

Being made redundant from Telstra was one of the darkest periods of my life made worse by the lockdowns - I couldn't escape and sat alone with the abandonment for months.

I swore I'd never trust another corporation with my wellbeing again, 

and the last 3 years have been solely focussed on building my freedom and getting out of the machine for good.

It's been a wild ride and I am grateful to say I have my freedom, and now my mission is to help my community build theirs.

ATTENTION Telstra ENTERPRISE EMPLOYEES!

I know some of you are going through the final days of redundancy right now, and I wanted to share this message with you:

GET YOUR REDUNDANCY PAYOUT AUDITED.

As someone who went through redundancy at Telstra 3 years ago I heavily questioned inconsistencies in my payout estimates.

If I had not consistently pressed for accountability I would've missed out on $20,000 of entitlements.

There are 3 main factors to this:

1. Labour laws vary between states and for me my tenure as a casual at Telstra  were not initially calculated into my long service leave payouts. 

Victorian labour laws recognise casual employment in long service leave if its continual as per Long Service Leave Act 2018. 

I had to proactively address this with them and it provided me another $6,000 in entitlements.

2. If you have been at Telstra a long time you are on older Enterprise Agreements for labour laws which will likely have better benefits and entitlements than the current award.

Make sure your payout is based on your initial EBA when calculated.

3. From personal experience I discovered that the backend process for calculating redundancy entitlements is likely from Telstra's legacy HR system with one singular resource to manage over 2000 payout estimates.

I'll let you decide whether you trust the business to get things right the first time.

I put this out there to help those affected by these tough times as someone that's been there myself.

I got politically silenced and made "career limiting moves" by speaking out for people's rights inside 'the big T', but I won't be silenced now.

Power to the People! ✊

Sales teams at Cisco, SentinelOne, Trend Micro and more are absolutely frothing at the mouth of this CrowdStrike outage.

"Never let a crisis go to waste." as the old saying goes.

However, pitch-slapping a customer is a useless first response and should be avoided.

Affected CIOs & CISOs are very likely putting out fires, under a lot of stress and will have their brands questioned by other leaders in the business.

This is not a time to say 'I told you so.'

This is a time to empathise and lean in.

Selflessly offer support, share resources, be present with whatever you can do to help them.

Customers remember when you're there during the tough times.

This is a prime opportunity to build a genuine personal brand, not pipeline.

Pipeline comes with the genuine brand later on.

When the dust settles, see what the learnings are and how you could assist moving forward.

Realistically, an orgs crisis management process & backup systems would be under question more than Crowdstrike as a vendor.

If you do get an opportunity, consult on process and policy instead of pushing product.

Solve the problem of how to avoid this from happening again.

Put your faith in serving others and the money will come.

This belief was fundamental to my success as a Tech Seller,

focussing on helping the person in front of me instead of trying to take from them to achieve my target.

People recognise your authenticity, your efforts and your care.

This can be the differentiator to your success in a tight race for business.

Its also absolutely necessary to build the trusted relationships you need to become an elite Tech Seller.

I'll be honest - this belief is being challenged as I build my own business,

as the insecurity of doing my own thing takes a grip.

But I take a few deep breaths, remember that I'm here to serve, 

and keep doing what I love - helping people.

Many sellers don't hit the spot with the customers because they haven't developed 'The Right to Sell' to them.

Quite simply they haven't built enough trust and safety with their customers for them to feel safe in investing in their solutions,

usually from a lackluster sales experience to date or letting issues burn through their customers patience.

Customers are asking: If I can't trust you with the little things, how am I supposed to trust you with millions of dollars???

Earn the Right to Sell: 

 - get the details right, 
 - show your competence & credibility 

and customers will be 'in the mood' to buy any time 😉

Let's be real,

most of our heads are a mess right now.

Bombarded with information, notifications, bad news,

it's real hard to keep up with life!

Our customers feel the exact same,

all of us surrounded by too much noise and not enough signal.

To succeed in Tech Sales you must be a beacon of positive thought in your customers head,

someone they think of when it comes to getting things done right.

How do you do this?

 - create value for your customer every time you connect,
 - never commit to what you can't deliver,
 - service their account and requests quickly.

Do this consistently and you will achieve the Mindshare that you need,

living rent-free in your customers' minds for all the right reasons!

One of the most fundamental mistakes of B2B sales,

is thinking that all purchase decisions are made with logic.

The reality is that humans are primarily driven by emotions, 

and that most purchase decisions are made with emotional biases as opposed to logical thought.

In fact if the emotions are strong enough, 

people will use logic to justify how they feel.

Think about how you bargain with yourself when it comes to buying your cheeky little vice:

"it's just one",

"you deserve it!"

Now B2B purchases need be driven by logic, utility & ROI to justify value to a business,

but the vast majority of purchases have an emotional undercarriage of trust in the relationship of the seller and organisation.

This is your responsibility as a great Tech Seller,

to be good, trustworthy people to deal with whilst solving your customers problem.

Account Managers, BDMs, SDRs,

all need to leverage emotions and their deep knowledge of people to build the trusted partnerships everyone wants.

It's okay not to know everything, there is SO MUCH to this game of Tech Sales that isn't readily taught,

and the world of Tech gets more and more complex every day.

What's more important as a non-Technical Seller is to be dedicated to finding out the truth,

giving customers honest answers and ensuring the solutions you design are best for them.

Your ability to find the right things out and the right people for the job,

is a much more valuable meta-skill than any Technical knowledge the business tries to cram down your brain.

Honesty, integrity and trust pay more in the long run than anything else in sales - ingrain them!

One of the fears that I constantly soothe in my mentees,

is that it's okay to not know everything in Tech Sales!

Nobody knows everything and nobody expects you to.

That's why tech orgs have so many resources - there's so much to know!

It's much worse to splutter through a half-truth or lie just for the sake of saving face in the moment.

That misinformation can lead to serious downstream consequences and brand damage.

Your unconvincing blurt of a response wouldn't inspire confidence in your customer that it's right anyway.

This is why I teach my students that the most powerful phrase when starting in Tech Sales is:

"I don't know, but let me get back to you on that."

Not knowing something a customer has asked and finding out has lots of benefits:

- you both get to learn something knew,
- you get to show your diligence by ensuring you find out the right answer,
- you build your personal brand and integrity by only committing to the truth

In fact I developed most of my IP and knowledge of Tech Sales by finding out and asking questions of other senior resources.

The unfortunate reality is that even with all this information around us, 

'F**kin' around and finding out' is still the most common way tech sellers learn the ways of Tech Sales.
