The Thunderbird Project

The Thunderbird Project is a charity (SC 051670) formed to expedite the delivery of advanced autonomous aerial systems in support of our nation’s emergency services, when there is an ongoing or imminent threat to life. 
Why? 
Our primary purpose is to unlock the huge potential of drones to enhance our nation’s emergency response to major incidents and time-critical medical emergencies, particularly with regards to: 
*Critical delivery of emergency equipment  
*Personnel search and rescue 
*Command and Control 
What? 
With a collective multi-agency approach, we have looked at the common elements and focussed on specific end-user requirements, thus avoiding replication of tasks, whilst sharing resources and data. 
We have a clear focus on life-threatening (Cat A /Blue Light) missions, which has been recognised by the Civil Aviation Authority as the immediate priority for BVLOS approval. 
The Thunderbird Project, in partnership with all our nation's emergency services, have built a pathway to obtaining a specific CAA exemption or ‘special authorisation’ for the emergency services for UAS BVLOS operations. Thunderbird is technology agnostic and has no commercial interest. The Thunderbird Project is not a stalking horse for commercial BVLOS logistics.  How? The Thunderbird Project has conducted a multi-agency review, via a series of workshops, to achieve consensus on the use cases and resultant UAS capability requirements.

Phase 3 - BVLOS in unsegregated airspace (Ongoing)

P3P is owned and managed by a team of 6 partners with its head office in London and representation in Canada and the US. The partners are all industry veterans with experience in the development, acquisition, operations and financing of energy assets in the UK and mainland Europe as well as the US and North America.

The partners have all worked with each other on various energy projects in their past careers. Three of the partners were key contributors to Trinergy, a business formed in 2003 by Rupert Lywood, which built from start up, a portfolio of c.600MW of Wind Farms which were sold in 2008 to International Power PLC for €1.7bn.

P3P was formed in early 2011 to build a new energy portfolio based around gas fired CHP and Biomass generating assets. The business has been well funded both financially (by Rupert Lywood) and with experience gained not only from the Trinergy project but also many years of the partners’ similar business activities both in the energy sector and in project management and property development.
