Engineering Technician

Create high quality and high yield per hour production runs of various geometry HAZEL liquid robotic actuators. Populate custom PCB high voltage power supply boards with through hole and surface mount component placement by hand. Make wiring harnesses and encapsulate / isolate HV components. Fill and seal dielectric liquid oil membranes with measured volume/weight (bubble-less) liquid solutions for use in HAZEL production. 

Helped assemble, maintain and utilize on Tues-Thurs nights from 5:30-9:30PM, a large clean room HEPA filter enclosure used for heat sealing, screen printing, baking, and laser cutting actuator sheets.

Manage and help maintain an optics lab room where I create ultra high quality (licensed from the ministry of defense in the UK), miniaturized flow cytometers. Calibrate instruments and run testing and validation of performance on instruments by running various size, fluorescence, and species particles through a flow cytometer. Data is acquired by precise nebulizer flow control of different NIST certified fluorescent micro spherule solutions and adjustment of filtered PMT signals.

Worked on developing optical table lay out and station design for a micro lens array hexapod alignment/placement/curing system. Helped develop and utilized a bi tele centric miniaturized telescope characterization station. Helped set up modular 6’ Square clean room modules for use in moving around the main clean room production facility floor/lab space.

•Worked primarily with a partner in a small UHV lab maintaining and utilizing a very large (15’x8’x6’) three compartment vacuum chamber. 
. Worked to develop miniaturized ion traps and housings for use with cryogenics and room temperature use.
•Was included on 6 provisional patents relating to the development of ultra high vacuum ion trap technology, atomic source loading and spectroscopy in an ion trap, as well as slightly radioactive atomic source fabrication techniques. 
•Helped design, build, and utilized a complex laser test bed comprised of various overlapping and intersecting beams that were all tightly focused to the same point. Laser wavelengths from 399nm to 1064nm were used. This test bed will be utilized to load, ionize, cool, re-pump, and ultimately image a chain of ions with a high NA microscope objective plus a CMOS camera and PMT sensor.
•Worked with commercially available components to frequency stabilize and lock several lasers to narrow line widths. 
•Utilized a UHV systems in conjunction with a sputtering gun and CMA analyzer to remove monolayers of carbon from highly sensitive gold surfaces and then analyzed the resulting surface composition with auger electron spectroscopy measurement techniques. 
•Learned and developed custom hermetic sealing processes and technologies for use in ultra high and extremely high vacuum.
•Typical pressure ranges we worked within were from 1e-6 through 1e-12 Torr. All work was conducted in a clean room environment and the fastidious cleanliness required to operate within the ultra high vacuum was exclusive for everything.  
•Developed and helped design/build various CAD models using Solidworks for equipment to be used in our experiments and production. 
•Designed and constructed other testing breadboard set ups for separate teams working with Atomic Clocks and Quantum Remote Sensing. 
•Helped with any and all tasks required by any team, and was always ready to go above and beyond to help produce results.

nanoplus Nanosystems and Technologies GmbH / nanoplus America INC

• Developed economical/manufacturable laser collimation solutions for the Nanoplus Germany T0 can lasers. 
• Typical daily work involved: station design, SOP/WI writing, prototyping of various laser package collimation solutions, characterization, trouble shooting production and RMA lasers, designing fixtures and prototypes with Solidworks, 3D printing
prototypes, assisting sales and customers with research and application solutions, maintaining inventory and purchasing for the lab.
• Nanoplus produces widely tuneable (10-20nm) and small line width (<5Mhz) Distributed Feedback, Interband Cascade, Quantum Cascade, Fabry Perot, Super Luminescent Diode, and Mid Infrared LED laser sources used for remote sensing and spectroscopy of various gas species used in research and industrial applications. Wavelengths covered by all products are: 760nm-14,000nm.
• The most common lasers that I worked with were the T066 and T05.6 Interband Cascade lasers in the 1-6um region.
• Produced a collimation package for the hermetically sealed TO style laser cans which was smaller, cheaper, and more stable than
what was used at the time of my hire. I also produced the related station design, opto-mechanicals, and work instructions.

Laser Engineering Technician at nanoplus America INC

NUBURU® Inc.

• Used precision robotic and manual alignment tools to install micro and macro optics inside of a 250W, 450nm fiber-coupled laser.
• The final output beam was constructed from the combined beams of 80 individually collimated GaN laser diodes.
• Was eventually capable of aligning and curing up to 40 fast axis or slow axis lenses during an 8 hour shift utilizing a hexapod system.
• Assembled subassemblies and cleaned optical components utilizing ultrasonic cleaners, plasma ovens, glove boxes, and vacuums.
• Worked on wiring, electronics assembly, chassis builds, micro cooler mounting, plumbing, and general troubleshooting of PCBs.
• Performed 200um SMA and QBH fiber coupling, fiber inspection, fiber cleaning, failure analysis, and conducted reliability studies.
• Participated in and helped organize lifetime testing, thermal stability testing, and improving designs of opto-mechanical components.
• Helped with construction of the lab facilities, chiller systems, burn in stations, characterization stations, and shop area.
• Worked on continuous implementation of “Five S” organization, LEAN manufacturing, Kanban systems, and Six Sigma concepts.
• Would occasionally assist the mechanical engineers with part modifications using a Tormach CNC mill and shop tools.
• Developed work instructions and SOPs. Collaborated on a regular basis with a talented team of engineers and operations staff.
• Was always available for 1st / 2nd /and occasional 3rd shift work schedules, with extensive overtime throughout.

•  Worked for a start up that acted as one of the bay area's first virtual reality headset rental agencies. The company also holds patents which allow for real time on demand VR 360 degree video / photo streaming.                
•  Supplied headsets and content on demand throughout the world, and delivered on short notice to anyone located within the bay area. Selection of clients included: The Royal Society of Medicine, West Field Labs, Cargill, UT Austin, Univ. of Oregon, Dupont, Vrideo, Weavr, Sony, and many more.
•  Acted as a direct point of sale liaison, customer service, salesman, and equipment technician. 
•  Helped establish current company procedures and facilities to accommodate future operations and growth.

• Performed driving, set up, take down, onsite venue logistics, and management of 20 to 30 volunteers per night.
• Installed updates to VR devices, phones, computers, and maintained AV systems at venues. Also monitored for theft prevention.
• Maintained: 30 Samsung Gear VR S6 headsets, 12 Samsung Gear VR Note 4 headsets, 4 ASUS VR computers set up with Oculus DK2s.
• Educated and inspired audiences on the use of VR; including a private meeting with Sony Pictures executives in Los Angeles.
• Responsible for coordination and delivery of all VR rentals in the Bay Area as well as domestic and international clients.
• Delivered VR content for: SigurRos, Dupont, Royal Society of Medicine, West Field Labs, Cargill, Sony, and various Universities.

I played the drums for bands professionally while mixing work and various temp, line cook, and industry jobs. Toured nationally up to 8 months out of the year, and recorded several released and unreleased albums. 

Restaurants I have cooked/worked at include: Old Chicago, WT Shorties, Deli Zone, Pizza Hut, Mongolian BBQ, Cafe Gondolier, The Buff, Nissis. 

Other work during this time included temping at: Kelly Services, undercover intel collection for Denver based Labor Union groups, order pulling for a textiles company, bath bomb production, market study research group participant, CSAP standardized test written response grading, event planning and catering companies, grocery delivery man, commercial painter, babysitter, construction worker, door to door canvasser, Craigslist musical instrument flipping, landscaping / lawn mowing, furniture mover, driver, house sitter. 

I have played many venues but my favorites locally have been: Ogden Theater, HiDive, Gothic Theater, Soiled Dove, Larimer Lounge, BlueBird Theater, Aggie Theater, Boulder Theater, The Fox, Belly Up, Mishawaka, Moxi Theater, Skylark Lounge, Lions Lair, Oriental Theater, Lost Lake, Rhinosceropolis.

I’ve headlined and opened for bands such as: The Reverend Horton Heat, Cold War Kids, Dr. Dog, Low, Gene Ween, Rose Hill Drive, The Epilogues, Cracker, Rob Drabkin, The Blue Rider, Petals of Spain, DragonDeer, El Ten Eleven, and many more who were equally awesome but whom I’ve forgotten here. 

I played with the following bands: 

The Yawpers, Eldren, Instant Empire, Mercuria and the Gem Stars, Subterranean Safari, Politician, Galaxy Graveyard, Milo Sofia, Soma, Ukulele Loki’s Gadabout Orchestra, Andy Sydow, Von Sexron, Esme Patterson, Dragons of Medellin, Snails and Oysters, Aerosmith.

Professional Drummer

I have chosen to work within the field of high technology for its necessary challenges, reliance on creativity, and for its ever accelerating pace of development. I have chosen to work with the drums and audio engineering because it is so much fun! 

My path to this point has been somewhat unorthodox, but has led to me gaining a wide range of skills and experience within the fields of audio, percussion, and photonics. 

I am a creative designer, talented problem solver, tenacious worker, and an inquisitive lifelong learner. 

I believe that this century will usher in break through opportunities for our species to advance and evolve through technology, and I feel incredibly lucky to be here to experience and help facilitate it.
