Small reminder after some scrolling today:

Most people are actually decent.

In recruitment, you mostly hear the extremes. I mean the horror stories, the bad processes, the “recruiters are the problem” posts. And yes, those things exist.

But they’re not the full picture.

What doesn’t get shared as often are the quiet moments: someone giving honest advice even when it costs them a deal, a candidate being straight about their situation, a client doing the right thing because it’s the right thing  not because it’s convenient.

That’s the day-to-day. 

It just doesn’t perform as well in the algorithm.

I attended the Success Summit last week. I learned a lot about being healthier, happier, and more productive. Thanks Sean Newman for Hosting!

But one idea has stuck with me more than anything else, from Darrell Woodman, called the ripple effect of happiness.

I’ve been thinking about it all week.
The idea is simple but slightly uncomfortable once you really sit with it.
Someone with a positive mindset and a good attitude can make you 16% happier.

That alone is powerful. But it doesn’t stop there.
People one step removed, second-degree connections, become 10% happier.
 Third-degree connections gain 6%.

So if I help one person feel better, they go home and lift their partner’s mood.
That partner then lifts their kids, colleagues, or friends.

I’ve influenced people I’ll never meet, without even knowing I’ve done it.
That reframed how I think about attitude.

 Not as “being positive,” but as responsibility.
Which brings me neatly to this.

Two days ago, I realised that tinned spaghetti is pasta.
It is literally in the name.

 I have eaten it my entire life without once connecting that dot.
Someone pointed it out, my brain stalled, and then I laughed at how ridiculous it was.
And that’s the point.

We accept so many things at face value.
We don’t stop to think.
We don’t question.
We don’t realise how much impact we’re having, or missing.

Sometimes growth comes from big ideas.
Sometimes it comes from realising you’ve been eating pasta out of a tin your whole life.

Both can change how you show up tomorrow.

Lately I’ve been reminding myself that life isn’t just about output.

It’s about moments, people, and actually enjoying the time you’re given and not rushing through it. Just being present for you and your loved ones. 

Today feels like one of those days to pause and appreciate it, to enjoy the moment you’re in, the people around you, and the life you’re building... not just the one you’re working towards.

And I think, Saturdays are good for that. 😇

To many people’s surprise, I don’t have a fucking clue what I’m doing.


And before anyone panics, neither do most MDs.

There’s a weird myth that once you’ve got a title, you’ve got a master plan. A perfectly mapped-out vision. Some Steve Jobs-level clarity about how it all plays out.

That’s bollocks.
Most MDs are just people backing an idea they believe in, making decisions with imperfect information, and hoping their judgement holds up under pressure.

I’m no different.

The difference is I don’t hide it. I don’t operate behind closed doors or pretend everything’s flawless. I talk openly with our recruiters about decisions, direction, and how the business actually works. If something’s uncomfortable, we talk about it anyway.

Because silence breeds bullshit. Transparency breeds trust.
Which brings me to this screenshot.

I believe we’ve built one of the strongest models and cultures in recruitment. But here’s the uncomfortable truth, my belief means absolutely nothing.
The recruiters decide.

They decide if the model works.
They decide if the culture’s real.
They decide if it’s worth backing.
If it’s good, they stay and build.
If it’s not, they walk.

And that’s exactly how it should be.
Leadership isn’t about having all the answers.

It’s about having the courage to be tested, in public, by the people who actually live with the decisions you make.

Quick question for business owners / leaders:

Are you hiring right now... or just thinking about hiring and quietly putting it off?

A lot of the conversations I’m having at the moment sit in that grey area.

Not “we need someone immediately.”
Most definitely, not “we’re not hiring at all.”
But “we know something isn’t quite right and we’re not 100% sure what the right next hire actually looks like.”

That’s usually the most valuable point to talk things through - before roles are rushed, expectations are unclear, or the wrong fix is applied.
