Capt. James Foong MBA FNI AFRIN, he was trained in Malaysia; qualified in New Zealand; and graduated from the United Kingdom, a Fellow of The Nautical Institute London and an Associate Fellow of the UK Royal Institute of Navigation, has more than 18 years of working experience internationally in maritime operations and shipping. At the age of 28, he passed the highest grade of a ship captain qualification from the NZ Maritime School, becoming the youngest Master Mariner certified by the Government of New Zealand in 2016, and at the age of 32, he received his MBA from London in Shipping and Logistics, which is recognized by the UK's Chartered Management Institute. Passionate about improving the well-being of seafarers, driven by lived experience with burnout and mental health issues/attrition/loss in the maritime industry. A skilled risk assessment expert with experience directing and executing fully integrated marine communications, innovation, and transformation programs with distinction. Currently employed as a Master Mariner serving onboard 1C type ice class cargo ship sailing across the North Atlantic Ocean to connect the integrated maritime logistics from the East to the West. In his previous position serving as the Group Lead Auditor in MISC Berhad he was responsible for providing assurance to the top management on the offshore floating assets including the LNG fleet, FSO, FPSO, and Petroleum tankers that are managed effectively through safety audits to identify, develop, and recommend the specific procedures which will improve the aspects as to meet the operational and business requirements. Active roles he undertakes include being a guest speaker in podcasts and live TV; social media engagement with committees and individuals to share his passion for increasing well-being, resilience, and raising awareness of mental health struggles in the wider community. "No Seafarers = No Shipping = No Shopping" In 2021, MarineTraffic included Capt. James Foong in its list as one of the world’s "Top Maritime Influencers You Should Follow." Apart from work, he earned a first-degree black belt in karate from Soke Datuk Clement Soo, the founder of the Goshin-Ryu Karate Federation, when he was 18 years old. In his spare time, he invites professionals on his own talk show JAMTALK, a 30-m casual lounge setting live streaming show, with its slogan "where the best ideas come from a great talk" The mission is to highlight and share real-life stories that make us more aware of the world around us and promote faith in humanity.
