Exciting news for college athletes in Virginia! 

A new state law was just signed, opening the doors for schools to directly compensate athletes for their name, image, and likeness (NIL) rights without any NCAA repercussions*** (see note below for caveat). 

Starting July 1, Virginia schools can dive into this new realm, offering athletes at their own schools opportunities for NIL deals with the school itself. 

Crafted with input from administrators at the University of Virginia and Virginia Tech, this law refrains from labelling athletes as employees - a distinction that allows the NIL payments for marketing/endorsements - and gives athletes the opportunities for the NIL compensation they desire.

While there are still some details to iron out, like how Title IX laws fit into the picture, this move sets a precedent for other states to follow suit. This move not only challenges NCAA regulations but also reignites the conversation as to whether federal guidelines are needed to stabilize the wild NIL marketplace.

Virginia's proactive approach underscores the urgency for broader conversations about NIL in college athletics to navigate legal implications and ensure fair treatment for student-athletes nationwide, not just beneficial treatment for the NCAA. 

***CAVEAT: The NCAA declined to confirm whether all schools could sign NIL deals with their athletes in response to Virginia's new law. If the NCAA doesn't revise its rules by July and a school proceeds with NIL agreements, then Virginia might need to sue the NCAA if it penalizes the schools, as the association expects compliance even with permissive laws conflicting with its rules.***
