Ever thought sensitivity could be a strength? It took finding the right culture for me to realize just how powerful it can be... 
 
I have always been deeply sensitive. As an empath and perfectionist, I am always absorbing, always feeling deeply. Secretly plagued with doubts and frustrations, I often questioned my fit. 
 
I wondered if I would ever find a like-hearted place to allow my talents to flourish. 
 
When I accepted a position at Montage Resort in 2008, I embarked on a journey that felt like 'home'. Their culture - mission, vision, and values - resonated with my soul, and I knew I'd found a place where I could succeed. 
 
From my first role as a culinary 'fromager', I moved to serve at their three-meal restaurant. Pushing myself to learn and grow, I eventually became a Lead Captain and Assistant Manager at their 5-star signature restaurant, and flawlessly executed their buyout events. 
 
Being a people pleaser with an aversion to confrontation and disappointment, I created habits and routines that allowed me to thrive.  
 
My sensitivity, once a challenge, became my strength, enabling me to connect with guests on a deeper level. 
 
What some others misjudged as 'weak' became my source of power. 
 
I'm known as the 'Recovery Specialist' for my ability to make every guest feel seen, heard, and valued.  
 
As Department Trainer, I'm able to encourage and support others to grow and be the best version of themselves.

They ensure you have all the equipment that you will need ready when you need it.

I'm talking about looking at side work differently. 
 
Not as a boring list of "have to dos", 
 
but more  
 
"What do I need to do to ensure I am/we are set up for success?"  
 
and  
 
"How can I do this efficiently every time so that PREPARATION becomes a gift to myself and my guests?"

It’s not just a dream, even with the intense demands of luxury expectations. 
 
This is what has helped me. 
 
 
First, take a few deep breaths to relax.  
 
Box breathing is one of my favorite techniques. It is proven to relieve stress as well as elevate concentration and performance. 
 
 
Now, take a realistic view of your service.  
 
What is stressing you out the most? 
 
Is it internal expectations or external requirements that are causing the stress? Maybe a little of both? They tend to go hand in hand. 
 
Everyone is different in the way they process. Both of these have bearing on how and why people experience stress. 
 
I have found knowledge to be my first line of defense to ward off experiencing stress in my job. It is most helpful when it comes to confidence and my ability to connect with guests.  
 
How is my knowledge about what is expected of me? Are expectations clear? Keep in mind that they can be clear overall, but unclear with specific people. 
 
 
For servers: menu knowledge is huge. The more confidently I know the menus inside and out, the more I am able to relax and actually engage with my guests. I'm not afraid of fumbling information or forgetting ingredients regarding allergies or dietary restrictions. 
 
 
For managers: you may be a new manager in a new space. You want to excel. Are you doing enough? You constantly have questions running through your head. The best thing to do here is to determine what your actual responsibilities are, and focus on them.  
 
Next, step back, observe, and learn about each role in this particular restaurant and how they intersect with each other.  
 
Connect with your staff and begin to build relationships. Learn about them as people, what they do outside of work. 
 
 
Outside of work, here are a few healthy ways to relax and unwind to help you refill your tank. You cannot give if you're on empty. 
 
-Take a nap (weighted blanket anyone?) 
-Go for a walk or exercise 
-Journal 
-Read 
-Practice a hobby 
-Create (craft/cook/bake) 
-Listen to or play music 
-Connect with family or friends 
-Take a day trip 
-Be kind to yourself (positive self talk)
