I had a chance to speak to Barack Obama in Brussels a few weeks ago as he gave a speech to a number of European philanthropists. I was impressed by President Obama’s personal dedication to promoting humanity across the globe through the Obama Foundation. I came back with two points on which I very much share his opinion.
 
First. There is one thing that cuts through all the key issues our global society is facing today, from climate change to rising inequality and information pollution up to the risks of technology disruptions. It is human behaviours.

The point is that we already have all the means, technological and organizational, to address all the key challenges we face and thus secure dignity and a decent life in peace for everyone on the planet. What prevents us from doing so is the lack of ability to listen, empathizing, and share a deep sense of togetherness, to recognize that there are no unilateral victories.

This drives the focus of the Obama Foundation on fostering change-makers around the globe through education and mentoring: Obama leaders. An emphasis on developing individuals who can listen and cooperate is close in my mind to our work at Blížksobě Foundation on long-term improvements in education. It will be the character, soft skills and mental wellbeing of our future leaders that will determine success on the hardest challenges.
 
Second. Pinning our hopes to illiberal political figures in upcoming elections is not a real answer to underlying political trends across the world. The erosion of rule-based order and weakening checks and balances is scary. Disappearing human rights, freedoms and prosperity deeply worry me. Especially so in the US and Europe, which are traditionally considered to be benchmarks of political practices.

But these are consequences and symptoms. At the root are large frustrated parts of populations that feel unheard, excluded from the benefits of technological advancements, not enjoying privileged education. People who seem to have no chance for a future upside while facing the hard edge of problems like climate change. Those groups are offered simple, radical and often violent solutions which do not address their problems, but at least provide them with hope and recognition.

So we come back to the earlier point. The world needs more people with an ability to listen, empathize and communicate straightforwardly on every societal level. People equipped with the right know-how, ready to constructively challenge the status quo and collaborate irrespective of past differences and biases. Instead of yelling and pointing fingers we need a stubborn determination to solve the issues and challenges facing us all.
 
I hope we’re doing a little bit of that work at our Foundation. And I am thankful for every opportunity to talk with and be inspired by the true thought leaders of this world. Barack Obama is clearly one of them.

.... succeed where others fail.

HOW TO PRACTICE A NEGOTIATION SKILL

1 - Have someone to practice with.
2 - Use Zoom (You can record face to face)
3 - Agree on who is the Buyer and the Seller.
4 - Shuffle your Negotiation Cards and select your card.
5 - Check the tactics you are practicing
6 - Set the clock for 4 - 5 minutes
7 - Start your practice negotiation
8 - Stop negotiating at the end of the time.
9 - First try and identify what the other party was practicing
10 - Immediatly reflect and discuss the practice
11 - Watch the recording and reflect on improvements

In the TNC Club Meeting I had the opportunity to practice "Story Telling" which was mentioned in passing during the meetings open discussions.... I decided I wanted to try it on purpose!

So, I had a discussion with my 'feedback colleagues' before the practice, and then reflected with the rest of the audience afterwards...is a great way to improve your performance no matter who you are!

There remains plenty I still need to do to improve my own negotiation skills but the skill to practice is... to practice 😉

Make sure you don't confuse complexity with skill development... practice the little things before you tackle the big things.
