While the idea of writing their own book is appealing most people don’t know where to begin.

I was really happy to read yesterday that our Attorney-General Michelle Rowland has ruled out a proposal to grant the big tech companies free access to copyrighted material to train their AI models and flagged  the introduction of a paid licensing regime.

According to the AFR Rowland will also "advance talks with tech groups and rights holders on a licensing framework, forcing big tech to reveal copyright material used to train AI models, and a new small claims regime that would allow rights holders to sue for copyright infringement without having to launch an expensive court case."

As a small, independent publisher, book adviser to self published authors and company historian with 42 business history books to my name I am MORE than interested to to understand the small claims regime.

What's the issue some of you might ask?

The issue for rights holders is knowing when work is being used to train an AI model, when it is being used as the reference point for AI content, when what is generated is substantially the same as copyrighted work and when any of these steps constitute a breach of copyright law.

Big tech...just don't steal. Got it?

And, Rowland is going to explore whether a new paid collective licensing framework should be established for AI or whether to maintain the status quo through a voluntary licensing framework.

Hmm. A long way to go to protect self published authors, small independent publishers...but this is a win.

Now THIS is how you speak to young people — and turn them into customers.

When Uber launched its student membership, its agency Special US looked at how other tech brands talk to teens.

It saw Gen Z slang and TikTok dances, desperately trying to be “relatable.”

So while other brands tried to speak LIKE students, Uber decided to speak TO students — as intelligent humans who can spot pandering from a mile away.

That’s why they cast 78-year-old Brian Cox as a college freshman, who’s there just to get his student discount. Because it’s that good.

The results:

• Students became Uber's FASTEST-GROWING membership segment
• Awareness jumped 7% in US, 15% in Canada
• They exceeded ALL acquisition targets
• Oh, and the ad just won an Emmy

The lesson is brutal but simple: Stop trying to BE your audience. Start RESPECTING them.

The AI bubble is about to burst. 🥁 🥁 I just finished a call with two early-stage VCs. The consensus is we're at peak market, and everyone's waiting for the signal. 

Let’s re-cap on the last few weeks:

💰 Investors
Morgan Stanley are warning that the AI spending narrative is “running out of steam”. Current valuations are detached from reality: the top 10 US companies now have a combined market cap equal to the US GDP ($29Tn) yet only deliver around $600Bn in earnings.

Too many investors are betting on deep tech they don’t understand, caught in peak FOMO. Meanwhile, AI has spawned a wave of vibe-coded startups, flooding VC inboxes and diluting the signal.

We’re hitting physical limits: not enough data centres, not enough power, and diminishing returns from ever-larger models.

🏢 Businesses
Companies are rushing to “do something with AI” overwhelming their teams with options. Ironically, corporate decision-makers are often those who understand the technology least.

⚫ 95% of companies haven’t seen positive returns on their AI investments. (Massachusetts Institute of Technology)
⚫ 80% saw no measurable impact (McKinsey & Company)
⚫ We’ve moved past the “peak of excitement” into the “trough of disillusionment” (Gartner)

👥 Consumers
Consumers now live in a constant tension: AI is framed both as existential threat (“AI will take your job”) and as existential necessity (“embrace it or be left behind”). It's exhausting. 

Gen Alpha has started using “It’s AI” as shorthand for “fake-feeling / too good to be real”. Signs of “AI fatigue” are mounting: adoption is leveling off, attention spans are shorter, tolerance for broken outputs is lower. 

🤯 

And underneath all the noise, #GenAI has not yet found a sticky use case.

The big question is: Can we find a way to use GenAI productively and sustainably before it’s inevitably enshittified / monetised to death in the scramble for profit? 🤔
