As a cancer survivor and executive coach, I've learned firsthand the impact of resilience and effective stress management. I leverage this experience to transform workplaces, boosting employee engagement and slashing burnout-related turnover.

The High Cost of Conflict Avoidance

Leaders handle conflict. Not everyone is leadership roles does. The price of not having difficult conversations or delegating that responsibility can be crippling.

Not everyone in leadership likes confronting situations that make them feel uncomfortable or like "the bad guy". The last 18 months was spent working with one such leader, his senior management and fellow directors. This permeated down through the business, except for a few individuals.

If you’re avoiding a conversation at work, it is probably already costing something:

1) Employees leaving and increased staff turnover
2) Decreased productivity
3) Increased tensions between staff members and clients 

Avoidance doesn’t help. It makes matters worse. 

It just shifts the pain, creating heightened tensions, disengagement and stress. The most sinister part about this is that it increases the risk of burnout too by needing to be liked and lacking the skills or will to have harder conversations.

Do you see clouds building up for a storm?

Everything is a choice - maybe not the physical aspect behind it but certainly how we think about things.

March 2024 was one of those inflection points for me - diagnosed with cancer; wife and 5 year old son; just three months before my 48th birthday.

I chose to tell the “virus” that I was going to kill it and it must just “f$#k off out of my body”. My oncologist became my hitman. 

I have always been adamant that I am here for a minimum of another 40-50 years - unless Michelle, my wife, snuffs me out with a pillow first - probably from snoring.

So make that choice, but choose positivity. Choose success. Choose joy. Choose what serves you.

Will this be your best year yet?

We all start something new with the best intentions and enthusiasm. A new business, a new relationship, a new year.

This fervour is even more intense when what came before was less than you expected - and it increases proportionally to the levels of “crap” you have experienced before.

Diving in doesn’t guarantee success!

Effective actions require careful strategy and planning.

Strategy requires reflection.

Objective reflection requires guidance and some level of help not facilitation.

CEO's that I have worked with are often engineers and accountants by training. They are usually incredible in understanding the mechanics of the businesses under their leadership.
 
Leadership often comes with authority, but very little training in human systems. This is exactly why leadership and being a leader are so vastly different.

Feeling unsure doesn’t mean you’re failing.

It usually means you’re paying attention to complexity most people ignore. Strategic plans, financials, operations, productivity - the more logical and (seemingly) predictable stuff.

What leadership often lacks is the plan and the playbook for managing people, which is more often than not the spoke in the proverbial wheel. Employee behaviour can seem illogical at times, but affects e-v-e-r-y-t-h-i-n-g in any business.

Leaders know when they need assistance and ask for it. The leadership of businesses does not always do this.

Make 2026 Stress Free

If you want 2026 to be better than 2025, you need to stop doing the same things.

Don’t change your goals. Rather focus on changing…

1. Your ability to ask for help when needed
2. Your focus on progress over perfection
3. How you invest in your own growth
4. Your willingness to say “no more”
5. Your commitment to learning daily
6. The boundaries you set at work
7. The people you spend it with
8. How you respond to setbacks
9. How you prioritise your time

And then focus on setting better, more meaningful and realistic goals.

Resolutions won't change anything. Changing your habits and mindset is what makes the difference

So here is something for you to think about (and I mean really find some quiet, personal time to do this).

1) What will you actually do differently this year?

This is not what you'll wish for, hope for, or dream about.

2) What specific actions will you take?

3) What old patterns will you break?

4)What new behaviours will you commit to?

Another year of the same approach will give you the same results. 

You owe it to yourself not to do that.

Emotional Load - The Unseen Weight of Leadership

Not all leadership challenges are technical or operational problems.

So many of the leaders I work with are struggling with stress, uncertainty, conflict and excessive levels of responsibility. If these are temporary then challenges then it is manageable.

Often, however, they have no means to reduce these for extended periods of time.

This is the unseen pandemic of uncontained emotional load.

It builds when leaders absorb others’ stress. It becomes more onerous when they are required to make decisions without support or hold responsibility without authority.

It is often not seen or noticed because leaders often feel they need to hide reactions to conflict and change. They care but pretend that they are "fine".

Businesses are built around systems. But very few of these systems, if any, have been designed to manage emotional load and psychological safety.

This has to change and only does so effectively with external assistance.

Last year I began working with the Marketing Director at a prominent mid-sized business. His team is small, has substantial clients and pressures from his team, clients and fellow directors. He is beyond stressed.

Leaders don’t burn out because they don’t care.

They burn out because they care constantly, and sometimes too much. This leaves them with very little time to work through their stress and relieve the pressure.

That weight accumulates quietly until it results in physical, cognitive, emotional and purpose-related issued.
