The hardest job I ever had was the one I started right after I left a toxic workplace. Let me tell you why…

I was emotionally and psychologically MESSED up, which included feelings of low self-esteem, self-doubt, anxiety, and impostor syndrome.

I was so skeptical of everyone, especially my boss, because he was the primary perpetrator of all my past toxic work experiences.

I was terrified it would happen again, like the rug would be pulled out from under me, and this new role would be a repeat of everything I had experienced.

I had difficulty connecting to my value= and confidence because the trauma of past work environments made me question everything I did or said.

I was burnt out from working in high-stress environments and felt that what I really needed was time away from work, not another job.

I had toxic work habits that I used to cope with unhealthy environments, like secluding myself or working independently to avoid people. Which is the opposite of what I should be doing in a new job.

Sound familiar?

The hardest job is your new job after a toxic one.

The hardest reinvention is the one after trauma.

What is the career accomplishment I'm most proud of?

𝗤𝗨𝗜𝗧𝗧𝗜𝗡𝗚

Yeah, you sure did read that right.

I'm most proud of learning that quitting the spaces and environments that are not right for me is more than OK.

And I'm proud of learning this lesson because it means I've overcome all the fears around staying in workplaces even if I'm being mistreated.

I've overcome the fear of looking like a job hopper if I dare to leave a job in less than a year. (BTW...I left a job in 5 months, so 😛 to anyone who wants to throw me shade).

I've overcome the fear of what my parents will think of me when I tell them I'm quitting a high-paying job just because I'm not happy.

I've overcome the fear of not being able to find the right workplace and just deciding to stay with the devil I know.

I'm proud of being a quitter. Because learning how to quit meant learning how to make my own decisions and put my happiness, mental health, and peace first.

I now know that quitting does not equate to failure. It only means that you have the strength, determination, and drive to find what is truly right for you.

So cheers 🥂 to all of us quitters. Y'all out here teaching us what it means to claim the life you deserve.

I can remember the times I started a new job and was so excited because it was the opportunity to be a new me.

One that was going to be confident.
​
Take up space.
​
And tell people about themselves when they crossed my boundaries.
​
I can also remember shortly after starting reverting to the old me.
​
The girl who played small, all for the sake of others' comfort.
​
And this all happened because I thought just changing my surroundings was enough.
​
When actually, the most significant change that needed to happen was within me.
​
I needed to:

➡️ Give myself the space and time to define the career I wanted (on my terms).

➡️ Understand what I needed from my manager and company to thrive as a Latina in the workplace and accept nothing less. 

And because I didn't take this time I bounced from bad to worse always wondering if I'd ever find the success I knew deep down I deserved.

I remember when I finally got the Director title I felt I was fighting for. And nothing changed.

I thought my ideas would finally be listened to and valued.

I would have that seat at the table.

But to my surprise, nothing happened.

Why?

Because it wasn't the title that needed to change.

It was the company. The environment.

Instead of going after a title, I should have focused on finding a company that wasn't just going to give it to me for show.

I should have known that how I was being treated wouldn't change.

And I should have focused on the right thing...valuing myself enough to leave.

Don't be me.

I didn't think I had imposter syndrome. Because I didn't know what it was. But being in an industry where I was the only.
The only woman of color.
The only Latina....
Definitely played into how I felt about showing up as myself. How I viewed my experience and expertise and how I used my voice.

And I don't want other women of color to experience this.

So, I hosted an impostor syndrome in your career and job search workshop for all of my current clients. And here are the 5 tips that I want to share with you today:

1. Recognize that imposter syndrome is real and common.
Knowing you are not alone can be so validating. What you are experiencing is real...but it can also be overcome.

2. Identify your triggers.
What are the things that make you feel like an impostor? Once you know your triggers, you can start to develop strategies for dealing with them.

3. Challenge your negative thoughts.
When you have a negative thought, ask yourself if there's any evidence to support it. If not, challenge the thought and replace it with a more positive one.

4. Talk to someone you trust.
Talking to a friend, family member, therapist, or mentor about your imposter syndrome can help you to feel less alone and to get support.

5. Celebrate your successes.
It's important to celebrate your successes, no matter how small they may seem. This will help you to build your confidence and remind yourself that you are capable and deserving of success.

And always remember...You are not alone. You are worthy of success. And you deserve to express your dopeness at work.

Let's talk about something that often goes unnoticed during the interview process...

The pressure you are putting on yourself to PERFORM to get HIRED, so you don't have to be in the damn job search anymore.

I get it. Didn't nobody say job searching was the bomb.

But this pressure to perform, and be someone you think the company wants you to be, is messing with your ability to get hired. How?

🚫 Focusing too much on performing during an interview can have negative impacts, including:

1️⃣ Creating anxiety that can hinder your ability to showcase your true potential.
2️⃣ Loss of focus on the actual conversation, losing sight of your own questions and concerns.
3️⃣ Messing with your confidence as you try to fit into a mold that may not align with who you truly are.
4️⃣ Neglecting to ask the right questions to assess if the company is the right fit for you.
5️⃣ Missing red flags or valuable information that you could use in later stages of the interview process.

Let's flip the script and embrace the power of being ourselves. Knowing that YOU are the person that CAN AND WILL BE HIRED.

My Journey from Toxic Workplace to Dope Career Coach 
 
➡️2016: Caught in a toxic job, I had my first panic attack on a subway ride hitting a seriously low moment in my life.  
 
➡️2017: I contemplated escaping, but fear, insecurity, doubt, and broken confidence kept me tethered to the devil I knew.  
 
➡️2018: After years of battling, I finally received a title that matched my contributions. But I couldn’t even celebrate. By this point I was broken.  
 
➡️2019: Even with a Director title I still couldn’t have my voice heard and was even taken off high level projects while my male counterparts were just thriving.  
 
➡️Mid-2019: Finally got the courage to leave the toxic space only to find myself taking a position out of desperation and boom...another toxic workplace. Five months later, I walked away with nothing lined up and feeling yet again…defeated.  
 
➡️Late 2019: Drove for Uber Eats to make ends meet and that time sparked it all…the initial design of my dream: a business to empower women of color. 
 
➡️2020: Created my business and snagged a new position that gave me space to grow it. I stepped into my true calling—coaching women of color to thrive in environments that respect and support them, ensuring they're paid what they’re worth. 
 
Today: I'm living my mission, guiding women through their own reinventions and toward workplaces where they can truly shine. 
 
I’m sharing my story so you know…it ain’t easy. But it is POSSIBLE.

Selling yourself can feel like trying to mold yourself to what a company wants you to be and their expectations. It 100% trips you up, causing you to be disconnected from who you truly are and what you and you genuinely want.

Selling yourself looks like:

Focusing solely on what the company wants, rather than what lights you up.
Pretending to be someone you're not just to fit the mold.
Dimming your shine to fit into a predetermined box.

Being yourself means:

Knowing your worth and refusing to settle for anything less.
Embracing your unique strengths and passions.
Being your full dope self and owning your true career story. 

So, ditch the sales pitch and step into your power. 

Embrace who you are, unapologetically. Because when you show up as yourself, you attract the opportunities and connections that align with your true essence. And that's where the real magic happens.

Hard work...struggling...grinding it out...is NOT the key to success.

Last night, during a transformative breathwork session, I stumbled upon a massive realization: an old mindset I thought I had overcome crept back in—the belief that success only comes from hard work, even to the point of burnout.

Growing up in the projects, I was no stranger to struggle. It was part of my daily life, shaping a belief that success couldn’t come without extreme effort. But that's not how I choose to live anymore.

Today, I'm embracing a new mindset: Success can flow to me when I'm living with ease, fun, and joy.

Does a dream job or career actually exist? 🤔

Ok, let me kick it to you straight....Y'all can sometimes be skeptical AF 🤣🤣

And I get it. 

➡️ Working in toxic workplaces breeds internal doubts that you will ever find a company that will value you. 

➡️ Working within a career that doesn’t feel aligned with your passions and desires can be so demotivating that you don’t even think about looking for anything else.

It took me a few years to be promoted to director. And that wasn’t because I didn’t put in the work. COME ON…Y’all know I can work. Nope. It was because…

I thought I should just get promoted because I was working hard. Putting in the time and effort. 

But peeps. It just doesn’t work that way. 

The toughest lesson on the road to the director's seat? It's not just about the work you do. It's about who KNOWS about that work. It's about you boldly TALKING about your wins and the impact of your work grind. 

It's about being VISIBLE to the decision-makers—the ones shaping promotions and those sweet pay raises. It's seizing every moment to PROMOTE not just your work but the brilliance that is YOU.

So, let's break it down: You want that director role? Then you gotta be on it, focusing on your leadership presence, bragging about your work, and being visible to the decision-makers. 

Elevate your game, make your presence felt, and let the professional world know you're not just working hard; you're working STRATEGICALLY.

I remember being the only Latina in the room and trying to assert myself. Speak up. Let my ideas be known.

I remember how scared I felt of being judged by every person in that room who didn’t look like me.

Didn’t speak like me.

Didn’t grow up like me.

I remember how often I would just shut down at the first sign of pushback or rebuttal.

I remember how hard it was to just show my value.

And it was all because I was the “only”.

Being the “only” in the room can be the most traumatizing experience for a woman of color.

And it is laced with feelings of judgment, fear, and doubt. 

How did I eventually overcome these feelings?

By remembering that I AM IN THE DAMN ROOM. That I walked the same damn path as everyone else to get there. And I worked my ass off to have the privilege to voice my expertise and own my experience. 

That, just like everyone else around me…I can and will be heard. 

And if the space I’m in won’t support me. 

Then I WILL find another one that will. 

Because this Latina. You can’t silence her. 

Job search gone quiet? Then hear this message…

You can be in control of it getting loud AF.

And here is how…

1️⃣First, stop letting outside forces dictate your job search success. Yes, you do have the potential to change the volume of your job search. But you first have to realize that YOU ARE IN CONTROL.

2️⃣Ask yourself what having a loud job search would mean to you. Is it all about getting interviews? Offers? Responses to those dang networking messages you sent? Define LOUD to connect to the outcome you want to create.

3️⃣Now ask yourself…

✔️What can I do or try to create this outcome for myself?
✔️What haven’t I done yet that would produce what I want?
✔️Who haven’t I connected with yet who can help me understand my definition of loud?
✔️What kind of outreach do I need to make? 
✔️Who is the person I need to be to make my job search so loud it’s simply off the chain?

If you want something to happen, it can. But you have to shake things up to create the desired outcome.

Remember…it’s about CAREER EMPOWERMENT. Empowering yourself to make the moves necessary to get what you deserve.
