The travel was beginning to wear me down, so I have decided to relax a bit. I have left full-time employment and am for the time being sleeping in more.  I'm not 100% sure of what I want to do to avoid boredom, so I'm filling my days with reading, prayer, and thinking about what will keep me challenged.

After 39 years working in pharma advertising, I’m deliberately slowing down. I love my wife, our dogs, our home, and our lake too much to be on the road as much as I have been in the last few years.  

I’m still figuring out the details, but I know that if a friend calls I’ll want to help, so I opened the doors of Into the Wild Consulting. 

My plans right now? Sleep in a little more, and not rush into anything. 

Just a quick update for my colleagues and friends on LinkedIn. You may have noticed I haven't been very active here lately, and that's because I've been taking some time to reflect and make a big decision. In early January, I left JUICE Pharma Worldwide, and I'm happy to say that I'm now officially out of the full-time advertising business. 

As many of you know, I'm a relational person at heart and I enjoy helping others. That's why I started my own LLC called Into the Wild, and I've been fortunate enough to help a few friends with short projects recently. If anyone needs help with a specific issue, please don't hesitate to call. 

But for now, I'm looking forward to spending more time with my wife, our dogs, and enjoying our home and lake. If you're looking for a BD guy, account guy, or strategist, I'm afraid it's not me. However, I'm always happy to chat and catch up with old colleagues and acquaintances. Retirement is treating me well, and I'm fairly sure there will be a dog on my lap when we talk!

Poetry and Plumbing

I've been thinking a lot about plumbing lately. Ok, so let me explain...

As a long-time agency President, I often closed new client pitches with a little story about "poetry and plumbing." My message was (and is) that pitches are won on "poetry" -- carefully rehearsed soaring rhetoric, inspiring creative images. But, the account is then ultimately retained - or lost - because of "plumbing", the day to day hygiene. Do we stick to timelines? Do we spend the client's money carefully and judiciously? Do we deliver the staff we promised day after day? Do we show commitment to the client's business?

Small things add up to be big things. You see, small things - or "the plumbing" is what separates those that deliver Every Day Excellence vs those that deliver a great 90 minute pitch. I remind my teams that every day matters. Little things like a timely email response, like budget diligence are what ultimately make clients happy (or unhappy).
