Provide design, hardware selection, budget estimates, programming and commissioning for Substation RTUs, Interrupters, HMIs and communications. Communications includes TCP/IP,  Ethernet, fiber, Incom FSK,  coax (IRIG-B), serial (232/422/485) with various standard industry protocols.  Also have other non-substation type deployments  like network vaults, Landfill Gas, DA and Primary metering. 

Provide design, hardware selection and programming for SCADA telecommunications which is a mix of narrow band P2P and mesh 900MHz radio technologies, utility owned fiber cable and the odd cell modem.

Provide design, programming and maintenance for SCADA OMS with GIS, AMI and CIS integration.

Provide Cyber security around SCADA environment, equipment and communications such as door alarms, encryption (public key and shared key), VPN, network segmentation, VLANs, firewalling, strong passwords, and alarming.  Trying to follow NIST 800-82 guidelines to help design a more secure system.

Provide end to end Outside Plant dark fiber for other city departments.  Did I mention I splice and test fiber?

Provide rentable duct space to third party telecoms.  Provide customer with well written asbuilts with meter marks and photos.

Provide technical support for other internal and external projects. Such as other fiber deployments. 

Provide Operations with technical support for any operational issues.

Provide budget information for capital budget forecasts.

Staying up to date on latest industry technology via webinars, conferences and training.

Working in Systems and Project Engineering
- Helping other Project Eng staff select hardware to meet project requirements.
- System commissioning of DCS systems.
- Writing manuals, working instructions, standard drawings, field change orders and tech tips.
- Reviewing and signing other peoples documentation and drawings.
- Configuring DCS systems.
- Configuring IRD and OEM hardware and software for new or existing sites.
- Providing technical assistance to Field staff in North America and abroad.
- Writing Training material and giving technical training to staff and customers.
- Traveling to site for system testing and commissioning.

Lots of trips to Canadian and American installations.  Any where between Fort Providence NWT to Nogales Arizona.  Both those sites are probably the most interesting sites to visit as well.  Each had there on unique dangers.

Travelled to Bahamas in 2007 to upgrade AVI system at Bridge to Atlantis.

Travelled to Thailand in 2008 to troubleshoot several new weigh stations. 

Travelled to China in 2008 to help install PAT bending plates.

During my time at IRD I visited almost every US State.  What a great adventure.

Field Applications Specialist

Primary task was taking care of Kentucky's Advantage CVO AVI system at 15 weighstations, installations, upgrades and maintenance. Worked closely with the Kentucky Transportation Center ITS department.

The DCS system consisted of Advanced Vehicle Identification (AVI) equipment at three locations, Advanced, In Cab Notification and Bypass.  AVI equipment was built by Hugh's Aircraft and consisted of a radio card and industrial pc.  Communications was a mix of 900MHz radio (MDS 9810), RS422, mulitmode fiber.   Weigh station display was Win NT machine running Advantage CVO software.

Maintained various weigh in motion data collection sites in Kentucky.  Did bi-annual maintenance on scales on I-275.  Sorry if I slowed down your commute.

Helped other IRD staff with weigh in motion data collection sites in various states as needed.  

Helped with AVI installs and troubleshooting in various states as needed.  Most notable was Sioux Falls South Dakota doing Heliax terminations in -20c.

This is where I learned to work independently as my closest co-workers were in Indianapolis and my supervisor was in Atlanta.  If I wasn't getting it done, it wasn't getting done.

Coming up on 20 years of successful ICS/OT project delivery!!

Project planning, stakeholder engagement, project documentation,  project phasing, testing and commissioning.

The past couple years I have been working hard on learning about ICS/OT Cyber Security to help make the best decisions prior to commissioning.

My hobbies are around microprocessors, programming and building.  I'm currently working on my third automated Halloween Candy Machine.  I have a 3D printer and a small CNC which I use for my projects.
