Fueled by creativity and strategic direction, I've received industry-wide recognition for my initiatives and expertise with Fortune 500 corporate partnerships, mid-level and major gifts, workplace engagement and peer-to-peer fundraising projects. 

These experiences drive my energy towards a focus on strategically examining trends, growing relationships, donor stewardship, and creatively improving processes to enhance nonprofit revenue and mission, as well as donor engagement and retention.

When I’m not driving development efforts, I love spending time with family and friends, traveling, reading and drinking too much coffee and diet coke.

Tell me you don’t understand nonprofit development without telling me you don’t understand nonprofit development. I’ll go first….

This was part of an application for a Director of Development role which I believe to be the most misunderstood role in all of nonprofit positions. 

Talk about a short-sighted, misaligned, unethical approach to hiring for this role. 

No, I won’t defer comp. That’s ridiculous. (Pretty sure my mortgage lender won’t defer my monthly payment.) 

No, I won’t leverage the community I have spent 20 years building to support your organization. I love these people and they aren’t assets to bring to your nonprofit that I’ve known for 2 hot seconds. 

This type of post is disheartening AND makes me even more resolute to help nonprofits on what the development role is truly all about it. 

Because as my dad would say, “This ain’t it, kid.”

As a consultant, I know for a fact I have fewer clients than most...

And I'm ok with that. 

Why? Because I'm just too tired to try and convince a nonprofit organization to:

-focus on development as a long-term strategy

-prioritize and calendar for stewardship

-create a healthy and aligned board

-plan for a robust year-end before December 28th

-make nonprofit staffing and retention a true priority

-chase mission instead of dollars

and so much more.

I just don't have it in me anymore, and I'm really ok with that because I really LOVE working with the organizations and the people who DO make the above (and so much more) a priority. I'm a grateful gal.

You aren’t. 

I believed it for years though. Somehow being “busy” and “tired” equaled professional worth.

It doesn’t. Busy and tired is just busy and tired. That’s all.

Take your PTO. Focus on your family and friends. Nap. Pace. Exhale. 

And, ironically, when you routinely do these things you actually show up better at work! I know this by heart.

I’ve had a post receive 4 million views and a post receive 125 views and you just can’t time it. 

LinkedIn is like investing. Consistency and longevity is what leads to any type of real engagement with this incredible community. 

Show up. Be you. Show up again tomorrow and the next day! 

And you do rock! Starbucks said so!

I was asked to judge a fundraising awards category for a nationwide organization. 

So many fabulous entries but the one that I chose was completely focused on the donor experience. From start to finish they had the donor at the forefront and it was beautiful. 

This is how it’s done.

Do you have a soul place? 

It was 2013 and my friend gave me a silver bracelet from San Juan Capistrano. And I was due for a vacation. I googled “San Juan” and booked a trip to…Puerto Rico. 

I immediately fell in love with the people, culture, history, churches, food, and crystal clear beaches of Culebra. It wasn’t until I got back home that I realized the bracelet was from…California. 

Puerto Rico has been my soul place ever since. I try and adventure there twice a year. It’s where I’m the most me and breathe the best. 

When people tell me they don’t have a soul place I actually feel sad for them. If that’s you, please take the time to find one - on purpose or by an accident involving a silver bracelet and a google search.
