In Friday's edition of Unstoppable Female Founders newsletter, I spotlighted a woman who is actively changing the world, one line of code at a time. She is Kathryn Parsons, Founder & Co-CEO of Decoded. Kathryn and decoded are on a mission to democratize coding and empower individuals worldwide. 

A few reasons why I loved Kathryn's story: 

1. She studied linguistics, speaks 5 languages and approached coding as 'just another language.' 

2. Kathryn is a champion and advocate of lifelong learning. She doesn't believe anyone is 'too old' to learn about tech, the digital world or to code. 

3. She campaigned successfully for coding to be introduced into the UK National Curriculum. The UK was one of the first countries to do so and introduced millions of children to computational thinking in the classroom.

4. She currently sits on the board of HM Treasury’s Rose Review into Female Entrepreneurship which seeks to address the problem of women being underfunded in business.

5. She has also won many awards for her contributions to technology and entrepreneurship, including the inaugural Veuve Clicquot New Generation Business Woman of the Year Award, UK Start-Up Entrepreneur of the Year and Women at the Top Tech Pioneer and more.

Are you VC backable?

This week's #Unstoppable Female Founder Spotlight went to a woman who needs no introduction. Known as THE GOAT and one of the greatest tennis players to ever play the game, Serena Williams is still playing to win with her VC firm Serena Ventures. 

Here are a few reason's that Serena inspires me: 

1. She has won 23 Grand Slam titles, the most of any tennis player in the Open era. Her last coming at the Australian Open WHILE secretly pregnant with her & her husband Alexis Ohanian Sr.'s daughter Olympia. 

2. She launched the Serena Williams Foundation, which has partnered with major organizations to advance community development including the building of schools, providing scholarships for education and more. 

3. With her partner Alison Rapaport Stillman, CFA, she launched Serena Ventures. To date they have made 85 investments, 79% underrepresented founders, 54% women founders, 47% Black founders, and 11% Latino founders. 

4. She has a pretty solid investment strategy proving that investing in women and underrepresented founders is both beneficial and financially lucrative. Thus far her portfolio boast 14 Unicorn companies including MasterClass, Coinbase, Gusto, Noom, Impossible Foods, Wave Mobile Money and more. 

5. She has been a staunch advocate of women's sports (naturally) and has gone on to invest in several professional women's teams including Angel City Football Club. 

It's safe to say that even after retiring from her incredible career as a professional tennis player, Serena isn't done smashing the status quo and playing to win.

And the incredible Dove brand team does it again with The Code! 

Taking #AI and flipping it on it's head to challenge false beauty standards within society. Through the Dove Self-Esteem Project, their latest campaign celebrates once again the fact that all women are beautiful, regardless. 

Furthermore it highlights the need for more diverse voices and input into the LLMs behind so many of the AI tech platforms that are now being used by the masses. We've already seen the dangers of homogeny within AI development teams, but I believe we're at a pivotal moment where we still have the chance to course correct.

PSA: Just being a founder who is passionate about their product, idea or market potential, does not necessarily mean your startup is a VC-backable one.

What do VCs look for in order to determine if a startup is VC-backable? 

1. Market size and opportunity - VCs look for startups operating in large and rapidly growing markets, as they offer greater scalability and a better opportunity to return capital.

2. Business model & scalability - VC’s assess a startups business model to determine if they have the abilities to generate scalable, repeatable revenue. For example, can you service 1,000 or 10,000 users on the same platform without incurring a massive increase in costs?

3. Team  - Many startups shift, pivot and iterate their products and businesses, but a solid team can quickly adapt and continue to drive the company forward. 

So if you're a founder looking to raise capital, make sure your startup is in fact VC backable before you start heading down the rabbit hole of research and outreach to a bajillion VCs unnecessarily. There are plenty of alternatives out there - angel investment, grants, debt financing, small biz loans and more.
