This was one of my favorite jobs. I taught GED and ESL skills to parents of children enrolled in an elementary school with a low socioeconomic demographic. I had a classroom for parents next to the kindergarten. I partnered with the elementary teachers to identify volunteer opportunities for the parents and then I taught the parents the lessons before they went into other classrooms to help their kids as volunteers. This program met a need identified by the family school services provider by increasing access to education for parents.

Thinking of and thanking all the veterans in my life and network today. This is my Dad Larry Doyle. He’s a Vietnam Veteran. Like many, he didn’t choose the military path, but it chose him. And he made the best of it. 

He was only 22 when he went to war. He told me once “The earlier in your life you’re exposed to violence, the more it affects you.”  I’ve always thought that gave him compassion for others who have been through hard things. 

He got drafted into the army to report the next Monday so he decided to join the Air Force on Friday instead. He served four years from basic training in Oklahoma to Vietnam to England. 

He went on to a career with early computers  in the Aerospace industry with Martin Marietta which became Lockheed Martin then IBM and then consulting. He told me the story of being part of the team that introduced Email to IBM and he worked on many space launches at Cape Canaveral in the 70’s in the early development of the space program. 

He always says that being in the military gave him a new direction in life and the GI Bill he got led him to be the first college graduate in our family, and he’s always been grateful for that, but there were other harder challenges too. Recovering from war is a lifelong journey. 

But he used that to serve others. He went on to become a chaplain and church deacon in his “retirement” volunteering nearly full time for over 20 years. He became the president of his local genealogical society, volunteers for elections, and leads faith-based classes. 

Most people know Vietnam veterans didn’t receive a warm welcome home in 1968 and that troubled him for a long time. It was years before I saw him wear his Vietnam Veteran hat and years before he attended veterans’ events and talked about his experience. 

So this photo of him in front of the traveling Vietnam Wall at a veterans just a few years ago is significant. He pointed out his friends’ names as we walked past. I can’t imagine how hard that was. Now he’s involved in veterans communities, he appreciates VA services, and he helps other veterans any chance he gets. 

It’s probably why I’ve always had a heart for people transitioning from military to the civilian world. And why I always stop to engage and thank a veteran wearing a hat like this. 

So to all of you who have served in the military or are serving now, and to all the family members who support them, thank you for your service. And welcome home.

Last week I worked with HR Leaders in the Poudre School District to understand what it means to "work from your strengths" and to value the contributions of others through the lens of their strengths. 

What was special about this group of leaders is that they also support other employees, so this learning positively impacts not just their own teams, but the teams they coach and train. And they are so committed to having that kind of positive impact! 

Some of the most impactful conversations we had:

🟦 We tend to give others what WE need. How can we get more curious about what THEY need?

🟩 People leave workplaces where they don't get to use their strengths. Have you asked your coworkers or the employees you support if they are getting to bring their unique talents to their work? 

🟪 Having STAY interviews is so much more powerful than EXIT interviews. Getting clear about wht people want in their careers and how to support them while they are in your organization is so much more effective than trying to turn an actively disengaged employee back into an engaged employee once they feel they are not valued. 

🟨 Each person on your team brings something special. If you can understand what each person uniquely contributes and value and invite their contributions, you'll create a really strong team. 

🟥 Finding a way to keep this learning top of mind is where the magic is. How can you keep your team strength map in a visible place or remember what others bring an need as you work together?

What happens when a team of leaders spends the day together for a “Work from your Strengths” Retreat? The Town of Johnstown, CO Police Department can tell you. 

⭐️Greater understanding of themselves and their teammates. 

⭐️An appreciation for the specific unique value each person brings to the team. 

⭐️Ideas for collaboration and task-trading. 

⭐️Insights into the variety of perspectives each person contributes to their work and how that strengthens them as a group.

⭐️The value of different approaches to one problem allowing solutions to be more comprehensive. 

⭐️How understanding what employees BRING and what they NEED to do their best work - and taking action to make that possible - encourages loyalty, employee growth, and retention. 

⭐️A revelation that they are stronger together because what one person misses, someone else sees. 

⭐️Clarity on how each of their approaches can both help and sometimes hinder in a group (Overusing something good can sometimes be too much. Good to be aware!) 

⭐️Learning how to conduct and prioritize strengths-based “Stay Interviews” before “Exit Interviews” are needed. (It’s estimated that 50% of Americans are considering new jobs. This is the antidote.) 

⭐️Knowledge that getting to work from their strengths and feel valued for their unique contributions increases employee engagement. (It increases volunteer and community engagement too!) 

This is #Strategic Leadership in action. To serve others well, you serve your own first. 

I have so much respect for leaders like Chief Jeff Strossner who prioritize professional development and team building that honors each other so well.

This weekend was one of the greatest honors of my life. My daughter Skye Vancil invited me as the Keynote speaker for the Society of Women in Space Exploration “Sally Ride Night” gala at Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University in Florida to speak on “Working from your Strengths” in the Aerospace Industry. 

As we manage our careers, knowing and communicating our unique strengths and making career decisions to leverage them in places where we can be valued for our unique contributions will help us to be more engaged and more successful. It’s true in every industry. 

As the granddaughter, daughter, niece, and mother of Aerospace professionals, it was so personally meaningful to speak to this group. 

My Dad worked at Cape Canaveral on the Viking program when I was a kid, my Grandpa worked at Vandenburg AFB on the Titan programs, and my uncle was in supply chain for Lockheed Martin. 

Now my daughter is an intern at L3Harris Technologies and a student in Aerospace Engineering, Astronautics. 

It must have skipped a generation! 

But from a strengths standpoint, MY value isn’t to BE an engineer, pilot, or astronaut. Maybe it’s to support them, inspire them, and be inspired by them. 

I was a kid when Sally Ride became the first woman in space, so it’s only been in my lifetime that all that’s possible for women  today became possible. It was fun to imagine the strengths that drove them! 

And Saturday night I was definitely inspired by the incredible women in Aerospace who came as mentors, as faculty, and as students to support each other and celebrate the incredible women who have come before them.
