I'm living on the Build side of Data Science this past year, creating applications and building analytical capabilities for teams across the enterprise, as part of a small but mighty agile DS/DE/DA team. I use the ever-expanding Google Cloud Platform's capabilities to do things we couldn't do a few years ago. I'm a pythonista, a SQL jockey, and usually the first person to ask a question at a meeting. Occasionally I admit to using a GenAI image in a presentation or wiki.

I lead a reporting team and coordinate with database and application development teams in a small but mighty I.T. department for a company that dreams big, wins big, and is growing fast. I am responsible for data architecture, planning and development in support of my KPIs. Seven months in, I'm constantly learning because everything is new in this role - tools, industry, workflow.

Director of Information Technology, Data Scientist

As part of Panera's Enterprise Data Sciences team, I build and maintain models and customer metrics to support our Digital Marketing and Loyalty/CRM teams for the largest QSR loyalty program in the United States. I write in Python and several flavors of SQL. I own the design, I build the data product, I write the code, I test the method and results, I tell the story.

I am working with a team of data scientists and data engineers to design, build, put into production and validate data products. As part of an analytical team supporting the largest retail restaurant loyalty program in the U.S., my work is continually evolving with new questions, new challenges and opportunities for new techniques. My role is innovative, collaborative, time-sensitive, supports decision-makers and impacts the bottom line.

Analyst/Data Scientist

I am working with data architects, data engineers and Hadoop developers to create an I.T.-based analytics group. I am writing calculations of customer metrics in Python using pandas, numpy and scipy. I am working with a consulting group to evaluate proof-of-concept programs. I am learning PySpark and the navigation of the Hadoop ecosystem.

Consultant - Data Scientist

I support the implementation of a Master Data Management platform through building, debugging and maintaining ETL processes. I use Pentaho Data Integration suite (aka Kettle) to develop ETLs, including leveraging skills in SQL, Javascript and an understanding of data modeling and using ERDs. 

I collaborate with developers and analysts in an Agile work team and document our processes thoroughly for smooth hand-off.

As the project neared conclusion I was asked to join a newly-formed data science team.

Consultant - ETL Developer

5/24/2015 - Seven months in and my position and the projects I'm working on have changed scope considerably. I began working with a team of three, now I'm one of probably 15 team members in three cities and two countries. I've been primarily tasked with data analysis, specifically an exploration of existing processes in anticipation of building better processes, as well as cleaning the data and writing use cases. It's interesting that in both this current position and my previous one at Maritz, I'd think of myself as a data analyst, but the work carried out in each role is very different - the current with understanding systems and databases, the previous with using sample data to understand outside phenomena. 

1/6/2015 - After two months I've passed the honeymoon phase and the "new job smell" has faded. I'm in the thick of it and I love that it's a challenge. I work with the Cafe Systems Data Architecture team to troubleshoot problem areas in the EDW, script SQL to make changes or use javascript and XML steps in PDI to adjust the output. Really enjoying all the resources available online and through my team to pick up what I need to pick up.

10/30/2014 - this is my first week in this position. I'm working with Pentaho and Oracle SQL Developer, learning the EDW, data models, and production processes, and supporting these with XML , SQL queries and data integration transformations.

Maritz Research

I enjoyed my seven years at Maritz very much. I supported large customer experience tracking studies through sampling design, quality control, reporting (you might call it ETL though I work from flat files rather than databases), and statistical testing. I have participated in research related to survey methodology, developed SAS coding skills with an eye towards flexibility and efficiency, and used logistic regression and multilevel models. I presented at professional conferences, developed other team members, and participated in a deadline- and client-oriented environment.

I left Maritz in October 2014 for a position at Panera Bread. I enjoyed my time at Maritz, and it was hard to leave, but I look forward to the new role in data science.

I've built systems by writing ETLs and architecting databases.
I've built and evangelized segmentation models for the largest loyalty database in the QSR industry.
I've worked with offshore teams to guide them through data and manage their products.
I've built the back-end and front-end of PC and Cloud applications.
I've worked with a wide swath of people who have challenged me, built me up, and shared so much of themselves and their knowledge with me.
