I got written up for wearing a Peanuts shirt to a work event.

At a software company.

Where half the engineers wore hoodies and the CEO had a standing desk shaped like a spaceship.

But I crossed some invisible line...

And I'm not joking about the sleep part.

Living with pro athletes made me worse, not better.

Queenstown, New Zealand in my twenties.

Travis Rice picked me up hitchhiking.

The same guy who became famous for launching 100-foot gaps in Mammoth Lakes and the Red Bull film 'The Art of Flight'.

I thought proximity to fearlessness like that would rub off.

Instead, comparison crushed me.

•Panic attacks turned watching a movie into a death threat
•Popcorn became a choking hazard
•I'd stare at Lake Wanaka knowing my thoughts were irrational

But I couldn't stop them.

The gap between their performance and my mental state felt impossible to close.

Here's what saved me:

4-7-8 breathing.

•Four seconds in
•Seven hold
•Eight out

It calms the vagus nerve.
Pulls you out of fight-or-flight.
Resets your system.

I didn't need more inspiration.
I needed regulation.
Elite performance doesn't start with motivation.

It starts with a calm nervous system.

I felt guilty taking 5,000 steps this morning...

Not because I was slacking. 

Because my brain still runs on startup-bred code: look busy, stay visible, perform productivity.

Work theatre.

Here's what I actually do now:

Work hard for 2 hours. Walk 5,000 steps. Repeat.
By day's end: 20,000 steps. Real work done.

Those walks trigger my parasympathetic nervous system—your body's recovery mode that counters stress and sharpens focus.

I return clearer. In actual flow state.

So why the guilt?

Old programming won't shut up.

My dad drilled work ethic into me: never be lazy, always be doing something.

Those lessons carved deep. They served me well.

Now they're misfiring. Flagging effective work as "laziness" because it doesn't look like hustle culture.

The guilt isn't reality. It's outdated code.

I'm rewiring it.

What my dad taught me worked for his world. I'm optimizing for mine.

Walking 20,000 steps while crushing goals isn't lazy. It's intelligent design.
Your old programming served its purpose. Honor it. Thank it. Update it.
Let's get after it.

I spent 12 months writing posts nobody read.

Then I learned one thing:bury the lede = bury your reach.

The framework that changed everything:

END → HOW → WHY

Most people write chronologically:

I started a podcast. I was nervous. I kept at it. Eventually I got traction. Now I have a six-figure job.

That's boring. Nobody cares about your origin story until they care about your result.

Standouts write in reverse:

END: My first podcast landed me a six-figure job. No resume.
HOW: 8 months of episodes. 8k listens. A former guest saw it on LinkedIn.
WHY: Personal brand beats resume. Every time.

The pattern?

Lead with the outcome people want.

Then reverse-engineer how you got it.

The test: If your first line doesn't make someone say "wait, how?" you buried the lede.

Watching patients suffer didn't.

Dr. Casey Means was a surgeon.

High-paying. Identity-defining. Respected.

Ask yourself: is this fixing the problem or feeding the machine?

Stop being a cog in the drug, cut, bill system.
Start asking why you're actually sick.

No system for my story → starting from scratch every time
