Those were the exact words from my direct report.
After I told him that he will be reporting directly to our toxic boss until my replacement is found.

He resigned two days after I tendered mine.
We both left in a very tough job market without new jobs.

"𝐀𝐬 𝐚 𝐫𝐞𝐬𝐩𝐨𝐧𝐬𝐢𝐛𝐥𝐞 𝐞𝐦𝐩𝐥𝐨𝐲𝐞𝐞, 𝐝𝐨𝐧'𝐭 𝐲𝐨𝐮 𝐭𝐡𝐢𝐧𝐤 𝐲𝐨𝐮 𝐬𝐡𝐨𝐮𝐥𝐝 𝐟𝐨𝐫𝐞𝐠𝐨 𝐲𝐨𝐮𝐫 𝐬𝐚𝐥𝐚𝐫𝐲 𝐰𝐡𝐞𝐧 𝐜𝐨𝐦𝐩𝐚𝐧𝐲 𝐟𝐮𝐧𝐝𝐬 𝐚𝐫𝐞 𝐥𝐨𝐰?"

The toxic boss sneered as he said those exact words to me.
We already had our salaries delayed for months.
That was the last straw.

I joined and stayed with the company because I saw potential in it.

Despite:
☠️ 90% extremely negative Glassdoor reviews
☠️ Having 3 predecessors in a role that was just 5 years old
☠️ The toxic boss lowballing my salary just before offering me the job

Looking back, this experience shaped how I view leadership.

🍀 Protect your team
- They are your responsibility, not a resource to be sacrificed

🍀 Lead with trust, not fear
- Fear may control in the short term
- Trust builds long-term commitment

🍀 Respect boundaries
- Your team’s salaries are not charity
- It is the value they’ve rightfully earned

Know when to walk away.
Your mental health is not worth a toxic environment.

Toxic bosses can break you or make you a better leader.
I choose the latter.

Head, Heart, and Hand

Sharing a gentle parenting story.

My neighbor's 3 year old boy showed my son a picture he has drawn. 

The small boy was using a worn out pencil so his drawing didn't look sharp.

My son decided to share his mechanical pencil with the small boy. 

However, instead of putting it into the small boy's hands, he threw the pencil over and it landed on the ground in front of him.

The strategy and empathy are right, but the execution is wrong, resulting in a less than ideal experience.

I took the opportunity to teach him about the 3H model of leadership, explaining the following:

😀 Head represents strategy
❤️ Heart represents empathy
🤚  Hand represents execution

Even if the the other 2 are right, 

a wrong 😀 means you might rush into things without thinking and make mistakes.

a wrong ❤️ means you might hurt someone's feelings or not notice if someone needs help. 

a wrong 🤚 means you might have good ideas and care a lot, but nothing gets done.

This is also a reminder to myself that great leaders and people use all 3.
😀 They think smart
❤️ They care deeply
🤚  They take action

⚡ Positive Energy ⚡ 


Have you ever been in a room, call, or meeting when someone showed up with positive energy?

They lift the room.
They spark momentum.
They make hard things feel possible.

🍀  As a Father

I have learnt that my 7 year old doesn't listen to what I say, but he absolutely feels how I show up.

I make it a daily choice to show up with positive energy around him, choosing patience and presence over absence and distractions.

He becomes more open in sharing his feelings and interests with me, and in turn I probably know more about Pokémon than most other parents.

🍀  As a Team Leader

Positive energy is magnetic. People may forget what you say or do, but they will always remember how you make them feel.

When times get tough and timelines are tight, positive energy builds trust and reminds everyone that we are working as a team.

Positive energy is infectious. It encourages collaboration, and often leads to unexpected opportunities.

🍀  As a Community Builder

Positive energy creates a sense of belonging. Whether you are organizing events or growing a shared vision, the energy you bring can be the difference between a group that meets and leaves, or a community that stays and grows.

The energy you bring also influences the people around you. During our hikes, I show up consistently with positivity and resilience, and inspire others to do the same, especially during the tough climbs.

We can’t always control the outcomes, but we can control the energy we bring into the room.

How I went from struggling with my first post to posting like a machine


One year ago, I was retrenched the second time.

Without a network I could rely on, I started writing my first post.

✍

I was weighed down by imposter syndrome and self doubt as a newly jobless person. 

I spent a week writing my first post, and the next couple of weeks reviewing and editing it before finally hitting the post button.
 
Post frequency was once a week, but I soon got comfortable with posting 3 times a week.

✍

I decided to get creative and tried my first video. 

As a cyclist, I planned to wake up at 4.30am, cycle to the Merlion, and talk about willpower with the sunrise in the background.

I rehearsed the script on my way there and did more than 30 takes for the video. 

When I finally perfected the video, I realized I had introduced the backdrop as sunrise at the Merlion, when the sun was already high up in the late morning sky 🤣

After securing my current job, I created a series of videos to share my CV and interview tips to let jobseekers stand out from the rest.

The filming process became easy and I truly enjoyed creating and sharing my tips.

After founding my Networking Hike Tribe community, I have had tribe mates persuading me to give video interviews of my story. 

I even had an influential LinkedIn friend giving me only 10 seconds to prepare for his interview before pointing a camera at my face 😱 

I learnt to be comfortable in front of the camera and found out that I enjoy sharing my story.

Recently, I was persuaded to share my experience with my toxic boss, who drove me to the brink of depression. 

I wrote a series of 6 encounters to help others navigate their challenging situations.

It was an intensely painful process trying to recall and relive those moments. I hope someone can benefit from them. 

Words flowed effortlessly and someone even complimented me for posting like a machine.

Here's what I learnt:

🍀 Everyone has unique perspectives and stories to share
- And that is valuable.

🍀 Majority of LinkedIn users are still silent readers
- You never know whose life you will touch by sharing your story.

🍀 Just do it
- When no one knows you, there is nothing to lose.
