Great product marketing and go-to-market strategy can transform companies, their brands, and the customers they serve. It’s uniquely cross-functional - spanning product, sales, marketing, customer success, and enablement: and it requires building teams on trust and a shared committment to learning and expressing the customer’s journey to value with a brand’s products and services. 

I am a passionate collaborator, a devoted leader and a lifelong learner. But if you ask me what I do for a living, I’ll just tell you I’m a writer: my dream job since I was a kid and the place my career began, in technical writing and instructional design. Great content is the heart of product marketing and go-to-market strategy: it inspires action, expresses value, defines strategy and educates audiences.  

Crafting authentic messages requires connecting a vision for “what’s next” in diverse industries with the product features and functions that will bring it to life. Product marketing and go-to-market strategy is an exciting, inspiring, fun, and wholly collaborative endeavor I’ve been pursuing for all of my 20-year career in software, spanning applications from customer experience innovations for banking, saas, retail and insurance; to online learning for higher education; from CAD/CAM software for jewelry designers to reliability and simulation software for automotive companies; from PLM and quality for aerospace and defense, industrial manufacturing, high-tech, and medical device companies; to predictive analytics for ag-tech applications - to the bleeding edge of AI / ML algorithms and the predictive analytics set to transform both the internet of things and all the things it touches.

Clarity in storytelling is not all about simplicity.

There. I said it.

😱Unpopular opinion, maybe, but what I mean is this: sometimes it’s about layering. 

🎬Think about it this way: power down your computer at the end of the day and you love to read great writers, watch compelling TV dramas, wander through art museums or spend hours with a single poem. This is because they layer complex truths that can seem to span ideas and experiences but nevertheless relate to each other. They evoke emotion you sometimes can’t even name, and they pull many threads of truth about being human together into a single, powerful, often surprising image.

Can B2B do this? I say - why not? 

💡 You resonate with complexity and maybe you don’t even know why - you can’t name the emotion, you get that frisson, “the goosies,” I call them - where the hair on your arms stand up and you can’t help but lean in and nod along.

✍️That’s not simplicity - and it’s not easy to do. Don’t get me wrong - it is remarkably compact. Imagine one image, one single page, or even just 14 lines of a sonnet doing that. It’s remarkably difficult. And it requires cohesion - but sometimes it brings together many complex ideas: it is not simple. 

💋They say “Keep it Simple, Stupid” - and I agree. But remember: your audience is remarkably smart. So I say - “Huge Undiluted Glory, Smartypants.” HUGS. 

🍺Did you find it? Lean into it. Big hairy audacious complex ideas need refinement - but they are the thing that gets your blood pumping at work. They’re the thing we scribble on whiteboards looking slightly deranged and stay at work late with provisions from the beer fridge to think through and express in full.

🪏Once you have one - it’s like digging up a diamond. Ever seen one uncut? They could be mistaken for a dingy old rock. Do you know how they’re cut? It’s incredibly tedious, detailed, labor intensive work. Choose poorly and it could be unusable. Can you describe it when it’s done? It’s dimensionality, layering, sparkle, facets, imagery and metaphor in one teeny compact thing.

💍HUGS. What you see when you look at a diamond is its huge undiluted glory. When you have an idea like that, you have the thing you can build content strategy with - unpack for days, build assets out of, explain high-level or in detail, explore each facet of. 

Let them keep it simple. Your audience is smart enough for huge, undiluted, glory. Lean into the best, most compact, powerful way to tell stories about these ideas. That’s the hard part - but I promise you your audience knows it when they see it.
