🧠 Jill Binder (rhymes with finder), she/her, is a public speaking coach who has empowered over 👥 600 individuals in 🌐 50 countries, working with organizations such as WordPress, Adobe, and Drupal. Her work has been translated into 6 languages.

Jill's journey began in WordPress. After addressing speaker issues at her own WordCamps (WordPress conferences), she founded and lead the global 🫱🏻‍🫲🏾 #WPDiversity group in the WordPress Community team, sponsored by Automattic. There she conducted 🍎 99 workshops for underrepresented voices and mentored a large global contributor group.

Jill has 🎤 spoken at WCUS three times, appeared on numerous 🎙️ podcasts and web shows, co-organized her own 🇨🇷 #WPDiversity Latin America conferences for four years, and received 🏆 multiple accolades.

Jill's coaching is built on 💻 30 years in tech, a 🎓 Computer Science degree, and countless hours 🐞 debugging.

October 30th is my birthday. Not only that, it's my FIFTIETH birthday.

“50?? No way, Jill, you’re not 50.” I look young, but I assure you, I’ve lived 50 whole years, and I am hecka proud of that.

Watching the world change over 50 years isn’t unique to me, but I still want to marvel at it for a moment.

We started with print photos and vinyl records.

My dad would spend 10 minutes setting up every shot... and we’d wait a week to get the photos back from the store and see if anyone blinked. 

My first “real” vinyl (not the baby ones!) was Michael Jackson’s Thriller. I wore that record out. Yes, I know all the Vincent Price lyrics. 

Then came microwaves and VHS tapes. The machines were confounding. Picking a movie and snacks at the video store was a highlight of my month. 

When I was a TV-addicted kid, my parents said someday we’d be able to watch any show any time. I couldn’t even imagine it. It sounded dangerous. (Of course, we all know that it’s THE BEST.)

We got our first family computer in high school, and only because my teachers insisted to my parents that it was needed. This was before the Internet was even a thing. Once it was, I became a night owl so I could sneak online when no one was using the phone line. Beep boop Krrssschhhh.

I discovered coding, email, and building websites, in that order. I only discovered them because people showed them to me. They weren't in the mainstream yet, like they are now.

Email was less fun when there was no one else to email, but I found other early adopters to pester.

I made my first website at the end of university (1999), and only because some fellow Computer Science students had just given a presentation on them!

I’ve been a performance poet, ukulele singer-songwriter, world traveler, corporate worker, small biz employee, business owner, keynote speaker, and more. I’ve been “local famous” for art stuff and “world famous” in tech circles. I’ve run international events, built global teams, and learned a lot. I’ve gone white water rafting, hang gliding, and zip lining. I have jumped off of cliffs - literal and metaphorical.

It was my big dream for most of my life to do something that would change the world. I did that with my underrepresented voices work, and so I feel my life has been worthwhile. No regrets.

I’ve lived a lot of life, just like most of us.

I feel like a good ending to this post is, "... and I'm just getting started!"

BUT. I'm not.

I have less need to do things now. Fewer accomplishment goals. Now I just want to Be.

I want to have a nice, quiet life. Be a good friend. Make art. Go on nature walks, when my legs cooperate. (Dang arthritis.) Maybe even continue to change people's lives for the better - both professionally and in everyday life.

But also, I've lived a life focused on other people. I am learning now how to focus on myself more of the time.

I have lived for 50 years. I have seen a lot. I have learned a lot. I don't look 50, but I'm very proud to be 50.

I just spent some time creating an emotions map for my #keynote. My natural voice can be monotone, so I marked:

⏸️ pauses
⬇️ lower voice and slow down
⬆️ higher voice and speed up

My speech is an emotional, human-focused one, but even your tech topic could have variety: the problem you're solving (⬇️ low, slow), the happy solution (⬆️ high, fast).

P.S. A quick tip: talk with your hands! 🙌🏼 Arms raised and lowered directs the voice to do the same!

I'm so happy to be back in my hometown of Ottawa for my #keynote tomorrow at WordCamp Canada (#WCEH #WCEH2025).

Even though I live in Canada, Ottawa is all the way across the country, and traveling here is just as expensive as going abroad. I’m incredibly thankful that multiple sources came together to make this trip possible.

I’m here not only for my keynote, but I also got to see my mom for the first time in a very long time. :') We spent some time together last week. <3 

Next week, I’ll be heading to Montreal to celebrate one of my milestone birthdays with my best friend. :D

I’m definitely making the most of this big cross-country trip!

If there was ever any doubt, my head is officially child-sized. 👶

To feel safe(r) and more approachable at next week’s WordCamp Canada (my first conference since 2019; chronic illness; still masking), I ordered a sample pack of better masks. I was hoping Medium would fit so I could wear Lavender. 💜

To no one’s surprise but mine, Kid’s size fit best. :P

(So yes, now I’m ordering a bunch of Kid’s size in Lavender!)
