Work Experience

Last week, I ran a poll asking what really shortens delivery time at work.    Are you surprised with the result?


Here's my answer - from personal experience. 


Paying for experience is a cost and not an investment 😁  

Earlier in my career, I gave up a promotion in Bank B to move from the Reconciliation Function to the Identity Management function.  Not for the title - but for a project I truly believed in.  


After the transfer, the role changed.  
The project never happened.


I eventually returned to Bank A, but the pace became unsustainable.  Leaving work at midnight was no longer something I could accept.  I resigned.


Unemployed, I was later approached for a contract role in Bank C. It came with a pay cut - and I didn't applied.


I declined.

The recruiter scolded me for rejecting an offer while unemployed.  


What he didn't realise: 

I was the only candidate who met all five requirements of the hiring manager: 

1️⃣ Technology

2️⃣ Operational Risk

3️⃣ Training

4️⃣ Process re-engineering 

5️⃣ Identity Management. 


In the end, I accepted the role — not for the pay or title, but to pursue the same type of project I had hoped to do in Bank B. 
(And yes, I formally raised feedback on the recruiter’s attitude.)


In Bank C, I asked one simple question: 

"What problem they were trying to solve?"


Within two days, I proposed a solution.  

The Head of Department was shocked - a junior staff member had been working on it for over a year with no outcome.

Why the difference?

“In theory, there is no difference between theory and practice. In practice, there is.” — Yogi Berra

Because experience changes how you think.

I understood:

👉 Banking systems

👉 End-to-end processes

👉 Dependencies across functions


Designing an auto-provisioning solution — what system access a new teller or loan officer should automatically receive — came naturally.


2 days vs 12 months.

That’s the power of experience.

What You Call Me Matters

How do you feel when someone makes you feel a little more special than the rest 🤔?

I recently noticed this during my scriptwriting course. There are 13 of us.  11 classmates called me by my full name, “Jennifer.”  But 1 classmate started calling me “Jen”… and she eventually becomes a good friend 😍.

There’s just something about the way she says “Jen” — a small personal touch that feels warm and familiar.

Some people call me “JL” (short for Jennifer Lim), but that doesn’t spark the same feeling.

I once read about someone named Michael who refused to be called “Mike.” I guess I’m the same — I have preferences I didn’t even realize until someone used a name that felt right 😀.

人生苦辣

Are you surprised with the results?  


Last week I ran a poll to ask when you truly understand your past challenges.  No right or wrong answer 😀!


After working for so many years, I’ve tasted 人生苦辣 — life’s bitter and spicy moments — a phrase we often use to describe the challenges we go through 😁.  I thought I was 遍体鳞伤 (covered all over with cuts and bruises).😂.


I used to tell myself that if I ever went into acting, I would probably perform well because of the experiences I had lived through. There I go dreaming again 😶‍🌫️.

During my scriptwriting course, I tried to write about the struggles I faced back in my banking career. But as I pieced the story together, I realised something surprising — there wasn’t actually enough conflict, rising action, or climax to form a strong storyline 😅. 


That’s when it hit me: the “tough experiences” I thought were so difficult… were not really that tough after all. I had always felt a bit pitiful, but I wasn’t!
It was only through writing my script that I understood my past in a new light 😀.


And honestly, I feel good now 🥰.

Common Business Sense

How many bakery stores do you see in the photo?

In this residential estate in Singapore, there are 10 bakery stores:
👉 2 in the basement and 2 on Level 1 of the shopping mall
👉 4 located just outside the mall
👉 2 about 200 metres away

Pricing varies:
👉 One store sells buns at S$1 from 6pm
👉 Another starts S$1 buns at 9pm
👉 One store offers buy 2 get 1 free around 8pm
👉 One store sells S$1 buns throughout the day, though the quality is noticeably lower than the others

Now the question is simple:  In such a scenario, would you still set up another bakery store in this estate?

My learning point:
I’m a layman, but I’m also very detail-oriented. Before entering any business, my first instinct is to count how many players are already selling the same product. If supply is already high, adding another store may only dilute demand rather than create opportunity.

Sometimes, common sense matters more than complex analysis.
