ING didn’t “launch” AI.

They operationalised rigor, which is an entirely different discipline.

I learned that transformation deadlines don’t pause for academic precision, they redefine it.

Over the past months, I’ve been finalising my Master’s in Applied AI while applying what I learn to fast-moving business environments, discovering that transformation deadlines rarely wait for research to catch up.

That gap between academic depth and commercial urgency is where many organisations stumble. Yet it’s also where learning accelerates.

The first lesson came during a rapid CRM selection project, one week to decide, a strict budget, and a request for “AI-powered features.”

The academic route would have meant a full market scan, capability mapping, benchmark comparison, and a small-scale pilot.

But the business tempo required a different rhythm.

We moved forward by prioritising essential AI modules, leveraging trial access, and selecting cloud-native platforms such as Zoho, HubSpot, or Freshsales, tools recognised for stability, low integration friction, and strong out-of-the-box automation.

The result wasn’t theoretical perfection, but a tangible step forward for sales and marketing operations, delivered in days, not months.

A second, equally sharp lesson came from developing a finance AI prototype.

The team had eight hours to demonstrate feasibility: three to mock up credible transactional data and five more to make outputs auditable for a domain expert.

Traditional data science would have demanded meticulous feature engineering, validation cycles, and model optimisation.

In practice, the winning approach was grounded in clarity, transparent data transforms, traceable decisions, and explainability dashboards.

It was not the most complex model, but it was the one stakeholders trusted to unlock the next budget stage.

Both experiences reinforced a central truth: 

👉 Transformation happens at the intersection of rigour and pragmatism.

Research defines the guardrails of quality and trust, but real impact depends on how quickly we adapt those principles to real-world constraints, evolving data, and decision pressure.

The goal is not to choose speed over rigour, but to make them coexist, through agile evidence gathering, modular design, and small cycles of applied validation.

The deeper lesson, though, is cultural.

Teams that understand this balance stop treating AI as a destination and start treating it as an evolving capability.

They accept that some uncertainty is inevitable.
They see value in iteration.

And they know that learning in production isn’t a failure of planning, it is the process itself.
