Transitioning from industry into an academic role represents one of my most worthwhile professional decisions. I have developed a strong passion for teaching across a broad spectrum of theoretical and technical units. I have also developed an interest in conducting pedagogic research to improve my own as well as wider teaching practices.

Completing the PgCert in higher education and becoming a fellow of the Higher Education Academy, sparked my research interests. This led to completing a part-time PhD in technology-enhanced learning at Lancaster University. My thesis involved exploring how we might use technology to mediate critical discourse amongst students.

As an academic in a technical topic - computing, I lean heavily on the idea that we must be able to transfer theory into practice. As such, I actively work with small to medium size companies to deliver digital solutions. This allows me to maintain a grasp on current industry best practices, which I then use to inform the practical components of my teaching. For instance, I worked with the Merchant Navy Welfare Board implementing web and mobile-based solutions that connect seafarers with welfare services in 5000 ports around the world.

I always had a burning ambition to build a company.  This was externalised through the creation of Good Apple Media LTD.
The business was founded with my colleague Joe Goodson. We developed a technology platform that connected financial advisors with customers needing their services. I reverted back to my technical roots and was responsible for developing and overseeing the infrastructure.
The business grew rapidly. We generated over 100,000 leads resulting in millions of pounds worth of sales. Over the years, we grew our product base to include the UK's first voice-based lead platform callcommission.co.uk.

My role as a consultant (see below) exposed me to the sprawling trading floors of investment banks. They were a sensory mix of trade tickers, flashing screens and traders shouting into squawk boxes and phones - the polar opposite of the cerebral, quiet IT office that I was used to. Looking in from the sidelines, I was captivated and developed an ambition to get a job in such an environment and I was successful in doing so.
For nearly 4 years, I worked in derivative sales for HSBC investment bank. Primarily, my role involved structuring and pricing derivatives that hedged against currency and interest rate fluctuations. These structures were bespoke to the needs of corporate clients. Therefore, I had to work closely with the treasury departments of large companies. There were several highlights over the years.
Throughout my time in this role, I was promoted from analyst to associate. Furthermore, I was successful in gaining my FSA unit 1,3 and 8 qualifications. Finally, I formed a close working relationship with my colleague Joe Goodson. This relationship led to us setting up GoodApple Media.

Interest rate and foreign exchange sales and structuring 

Logica

I worked as a technical consultant in the investment banking division of LogicaCMG (now CGI). Primarily, I was working on a team responsible for supporting and maintaining rFRAME - the company’s regulatory reporting solution.

The solution was used by a wide range of banks. My role required me to work closely with these companies, both in-person and remotely. It provided a great overview of the investment banking industry.
