After 20 years as President of Actuarial Solutions Inc., I have moved into a new role that will let me focus on working with clients and industry partners to help guide the retirement industry in a positive direction.

There is a lot of work to be done in helping sponsors of defined benefit promises to meet their obligations and there is even more work to be done with sponsors of defined contribution programs to properly support employees in their financial planning.

This is my life's work.  Since 1998 I have invested my work energy building a boutique firm that can meet the needs of small and mid-size employers in Canada that provide pension and health benefits to retired employees.

I am fortunate to have found so many clients that share my vision which has allowed me to build a team of like-minded professionals that deliver to our clients each day the outstanding quality and service that our clients deserve and have come to expect.

Canadian Institute of Actuaries

It is hard for some to understand how I managed to attain membership in the Canadian Institute of Actuaries given my inability to sit still.  In spite of the fact that I am not the stereotypical actuary, I am extremely proud of my FSA and FCIA and continue to spend a portion of my time every year giving back to the profession.  My volunteer roles have connected me to a diverse population of actuaries across Canada as a number of actuaries around the world.

CAA South Central Ontario

A short stay with an incredible organization run by a fantastic group of people.  A business that to some might look like your parent's roadside assistance company is in fact a dynamic business that is 'obsessed with member safety' and if focused on 'making bad days good and good days better'.

I wish I could have stayed longer but in the end everyone realized that they needed a different type of director and in my mind someone with more insurance experience than mine.

Krieger & Associates

A mind-blowing action-packed 16 weeks working with some of Canada's most recognized employers.  Working hand-in-hand with David Krieger, this is where I learned how to convey complex actuarial work in a straight forward manner and how to advise senior management and the Board.

I remain indebted to David Krieger for all the time and education he gave me in that short period.  David helped me understand the business side of building a successful consultancy and in the end gave me the advice "sometimes you just have to go do it on your own".  Krieger & Associates was one of our first clients and in a truly win-win arrangement we partnered with K&A to provide its clients with outstanding consulting while we gained the financial footing that helped propel us forward.

Actuary

Pencomp Management Ltd.

An incredible three years where I transitioned from actuarial analyst to actuary with guidance from Dudley Funnell and Frank Livsey.  While making the transition I also gained an education from Jerry Crowder in thinking like a client.  Jerry ignited a fire in me to build a pension consulting and actuarial firm that in my view could only be done with a long time horizon and a large dose of sweat equity.  Ironically, that fire lead to my departure from Pencomp to start Actuarial Solutions Inc.

Mercer

Responsible for the analysis of pension liabilities for small and large organizations.

This is where I learned to be an actuary.  At Mercer I had the good fortune to work with many of Canada's best actuaries and the opportunity to see an incredible array of pension promises in the private sector.  Mercer was an incredibly dynamic firm in the 1980s and employed a group of actuaries that were both true professionals and also great consultants and client advocates.  I was sure that I would stay at Mercer forever and still joke that "I haven't had my Mercer tattoo removed, just in case"

Actuarial Analyst

My focus is to bring understanding of the complex world of defined benefit pension plans and actuarial science to non-actuaries through effective education and communication.

On a broader scale I am focused on being the voice of taxpayers for sensible public policy in respect of government programs such as the Canada Pension Plan and public service pension plans.  I am also interested in helping Canadians gain a better understanding of their own financial planning.
