ROI?

I am pretty sure most people have heard of it or know what it means

Return On Investment (ROI) - an individual or a group of individuals expects a greater performance result than the invested resource.

For example, if an individual or a group of individuals invests $ 100.00 in a stock and the stock yields or produces $125.00 in value

This example shows a 25% ROI.

What about ROF?

Return On Failure - an individual or group of individuals attempts a goal but is unsuccessful on their first attempt, but after 6 more attempts of adjustments that are successful in achieving their goal.

This is a real-life example of 7UP

The brand 7UP is called 7UP because after 6 previous “failed attempts,” the beverage recipe became a success.

John C. Maxwell introduced the concept of Return On Failure to me and the audience on Friday at the A Day To Lead Event in Palm Beach Gardens, FL.

Does ROF even exist, or do you think it is a “clever” play on the words Return on Investment (ROI)?

I believe it does.

I have experienced the ROF so many times in my life and career.

I have built and developed my career with ROF as my best friend and foundation for my career advancement.

How to determine if ROF truly exists, it will come down to the Paradigm & Perspective of the individual or individuals?

If an individual or group of individuals operates with the Survival, Fear, and Limited Paradigms as well as the Scarcity and Minimalism Perspectives, then ROF may not exist.

I believe there are 4 major “Failure Prospectives”?

Total Failure - I have failed, so this makes me a failure, and I quit. I believe it is time to try something else.

Learning Lessons - this experience is truly humbling, and I understand the opportunities for learning and improvement.

Adaptability Execution - based on the Learning Lessons, I will develop and execute new strategies to improve my probability of success on my next attempt. I am also willing to make the necessary adjustments until I achieve my goal.

Risk Averse - I have failed. This experience was so painful that I avoid “risk” as often as possible. I am ok with average results and experience. I fully understand.

As the late great “Mamba” Kobe Bryant said, “I call B.S. on Failure, because the story continues.”

I think this is a great perspective to view “failure” and the reason why Kobe Bryant became a champion and a living legend.

My favorite perspective on failure comes from none other than the business philosopher and mentor to so many business coaches and experts: Jim Rohn

“Failure is just a few wrong errors in judgment.”

The reason you “failed” is that there were things you didn’t know, which produced results.

Now, we have these “new learnings”, you try again smarter and more strategically, increasing your probability for success.

What exactly do I mean?

With most sports, there is a scorecard to measure performance between two teams.

Instead of competing with a team, so many of us use social media as a scorecard to compete with others.

If someone has 100,000, 250,000, 500,000, or even 1,000,000 subscribers or followers, we want to compare metrics.

Unfortunately, this mistake has led to mental and physical health challenges for even the most popular influencers.

They are operating out of a fear or survival paradigm.

These paradigms lead to a scarcity perspective.

We can become so consumed with “attention” - the new currency.

We can misinterpret social media as an “obsession” instead of an “opportunity”.

This leads us to take destructive actions that impact our mental and physical health.

The insecurity starts to scream and expose itself.

Over time, the insecurity develops and grows into inadequacy.

The inadequacy hardens and cements into incompetence. 

To prevent or limit incompetence, I recommend changing your attention, interpretation, and actions to stop playing the wrong game when it comes to social media.

View social media as an opportunity to market or promote a message, thought, ideal, philosophy, product, or service.

However, don’t let the “marketing” define who you are as a person.

Define yourself based on your values and share them with the world.

Accept and be proud of your authentic self!

What does this look like?

Fear has 3 major components 

1. Perfectionism
2. Overthinking
3. Other People's Opinions (OPO)

Perfectionism and Overthinking are the hardest to change and overcome, but OPO cements them like concrete.

Perfectionism and Overthinking are two major stress triggers.

Stress Management, or the lack thereof, is the #3 reason for delayed progress or why most goals are not achieved.

My recommendations for managing or minimizing F.E.A.R. are:

1. Give yourself grace (nobody knows everything and seek Accelerators for assistance.) 
2. Progress Over Perfection
3. Adjustments Lead to Achievement (Patience, Openness, and Persistence)

I agree with Dr. Maxwell.

I also believe in God.

If you are a Christian, then the premise would be correct.

God is the creator of Greatness, because he is greatness.

The overall message is that we can’t achieve greatness on our own.

God provides the guidance for greatness, and when we collaborate with him, greatness is possible.

What are your thoughts?

Have you ever attempted a goal or task and it felt like hard work?

Creating or providing a new innovative solution?

Presenting to over 30+ people?

Maintaining and managing large data sets and technological systems?

The reason is that you are attempting to execute a lifestyle philosophy that is not natural to you.

Continuing with my last post, where John C. Maxwell mentioned that there are two types of people: Know Before Go, and Go To Know.

There are actually 4 major lifestyle philosophies that were created by my mentor, and author of the Millionaire Master Plan, Roger James Hamilton:

Social Media is constantly evolving.

Algorithms are changing just like the wind.

Influencers and content creators can have a hard time adjusting.

Should creators still be concerned with algorithms, best posting times, and formulas?

Chris Do at The Futur™ doesn’t think so

“I have never been concerned with algorithms, best posting times, or formulas”.

Instead, he suggests “Create content because it feels right” - translation provide value and solutions to your audience.

I agree that creators should be creating because it feels right instead of keeping up with algorithms, best posting times, or formulas.

Too many of us integrate our self-worth with the content we create.

Instead, Chris recommends “Focus on articulating your ideas.”

I recommend viewing content as a distribution opportunity to articulate and add value with our ideas.

I believe we live in one of the best times to be alive

We have the power and opportunity to create content and change lives.

One of the biggest mistakes content creators make is

“Throwing too many right hooks, or not throwing a genuine right hook.” - Gary Vaynerchuk

In simple terms, there are too many content creators creating content for attention, money, validation, to hide insecurities, and to deceive others.

They want to receive before giving sufficient and reciprocal value to their audiences. 

However, creating content should be done honestly and genuinely.

Creating content allows us to:

Process What We Believe.

Process What We Are Thinking.

Chang Lives.

We were blessed with the Leadership insights and lessons from the GOAT of Leadership, John C. Maxwell.

Let’s start with the first insight John Maxwell gave us

“Everybody fails, but nobody likes it.” - John C. Maxwell

I wholeheartedly agree with this statement.

If anybody tells you that they haven’t failed, they are not being truthful.

My takeaway from this insight is that “failing” is only final if you quit the journey. 

While we might not like “failing,” we can turn the experience into a foundation that leads to future success.

Your favorite entrepreneur’s favorite entrepreneur, Richard Branson, has a great saying and insight when it comes to opportunity

“Opportunities are like buses; there is one coming every 15 minutes.”

This is so true.

The only thing is that sometimes the same bus does not show up.

Dr. John C. Maxwell shared a very important insight with us at the “A Day To Lead” Event from his mentor and legendary coach, John Wooden.

Coach Wooden said, “ Opportunity comes before preparation.”

I know we may have heard about the importance of preparation before an opportunity.

I can attest personally that some of the best moments in my life have occurred when the opportunity came before I was ready to prepare.

 Richard Branson also says, “ Just say yes, and figure out the details along the journey.”

In my previous corporate career, superiors would present “opportunity projects” to me, I would say yes and figure out the details along the journey, just like Richard Branson advises.

I also remember colleagues who would only want to participate in projects or opportunities if they could prepare first.

That is the great thing about life some sometimes one opportunity can truly change your life.

The opportunity to have an accountability partner came before I was prepared to write my first book.

The pandemic was the perfect opportunity for me to start a podcast before I was ready.

What has been your experience when it comes to opportunities presenting themselves before you are prepared to execute on them?

What are your thoughts on the failure and success relationship?

Have you ever heard of the terms “good miss” or “bad miss”?

If you have not, you are not alone.

There were more insights and wisdom that I learned from Dr. John C. Maxwell at the “A Day To Lead” event 2 weeks ago.

“I want to explain something to you; you need  to understand the difference between a good miss and a bad miss.”

He had all of us ready to listen eagerly to understand the explanation behind the difference.

“Failing forward is a good miss, Failing backward is a bad miss.”

My understanding from his explanation is that as long as you are making forward progress with “failing,” that is a good miss, and enough good misses will lead to “makes” resulting in success.

Also, good miss is all bout making “adjustments” and consistently pursuing progress until success or the result you seek becomes a reality.

A bad miss is all about “excuses” used to build monuments that prevent us from achieving our dreams and goals.

What do salespeople and modern-day content creators have in common?

Hint: It is a common mistake that doesn’t lead to more sales or business revenue

Answer: Expected to “close the sale” before adding sufficient value to the buyer

Too many content creators love to include Call-To-Action (CTA)’s on every post.

“Create a post without packaging an offer; you don’t have to optimize or monetize every post.”

At the beginning of the A Day To Lead Event with John C. Maxwell and Friends, he asked us a fundamental and aspirational question.

I believe he asked us the questions for 2 reasons:

(1). To anchor the previous concept of Return On Failure, and to see failure from a different perspective than how it is normally perceived.

(2). More important to dream and aspire for more

“What would you attempt to do if failure were not possible?”

A great question.

I already know my answer.

This is something that I think about often.

My answer would be to start and maintain a film studio: a combination of Tyler Perry Studios—innovation and trailblazing —and The Walt Disney Studios —brand awareness, and Pixar Animation Studios - imagination and creativity.

What would you do if failure were not possible?

Over 50% of the population wants to achieve and experience greatness

Why is it that only 10% - 20% achieve or experience it?

Simply, Actions speak louder than words.

How would an individual go about achieving greatness?

I have experienced greatness a few times in my life, and I will give the steps to success

4. Ambition
5. Standards
6. Habits
7. Goodness
8. Excellence
9. Greatness
10. Adaptability (including Repetition)

Let’s get started.

Once again, there are 5 Paradigms:

1. Fear
2. Survival
3. Limited
4. Risk & Reward
5. Abundance

Due to parental and societal programming and personal experience, most people operate and maintain a Fear, Survival, or Limited Paradigm.

Are you willing to take the necessary steps to arrive at the destination?

Once again, there are 5 Perspectives to match the 5 Paradigms

1. Scarcity
2. Minimalism
3. Conservative
4. Progressive
5. Abundance

With the anchoring of the “programming” I mentioned earlier, most people operate and maintain a Scarcity, Minimalism, and Conservative perspective.

When these paradigms and perspectives integrate and form the identity, we understand why most people don’t achieve greatness.

Moving along, our identities shape our values – we all make time for the things and people we value.

Different values produce different results.

Our values are the “catalyst” for creating and maintaining our Ambition.

Ambition is the “fuel” required to achieve anything.

There are 6 Degrees of Ambition

1. Idea
2. Interest
3. Desire
4. Commitment
5. Dedication
6. Lifestyle
 
Even if an individual gets the prior 3 steps right, get this step wrong, and the results will be evident.

Once again, most people keep their ambition in the idea, interest, and desire degrees and wonder why their results and lifestyle are not improving.

Ambition leads to Standards.

Standards create and maintain Habits.

Good Habits will lead us closer to “Goodness.”

Goodness is a great indicator that we are more than 50% closer to achieving greatness.

Author Jim Collins said it best, “You have to be willing to give up good to be great!”

Goodness executed consistently over time leads to Excellence.

Excellence executed over time will lead us to “Greatness”.

We have finally arrived at “Greatness”.

The biggest trap at Greatness Gateway is that it requires maintenance, and that can only be achieved through Adaptability.

Adaptability requires Repetition!

We are what we do repeatedly.

My final recommendation is that once your greatness has been achieved, work just as hard to keep it.

I believe it can be a traumatic experience to achieve greatness, only to regress backwards and struggle on the journey to greatness again.

What are your thoughts?

Tell me if this sounds like you:

You admire someone’s success, and you compare that to your struggles.

That could be considered unfair, right?

We are comparing apples to oranges.

Well, as unfair as that may sound, we do it frequently as a society.

A successful person’s Chapter 100 to our Chapter 1, 2, or 3.

The results are not a fair comparison.

Too many of us make the mistake of believing greatness should arrive immediately

I remember when a former director at a previous employer would want to compare my competency and results to other employees who were at the company for less than 1 year.

At the time, I had been with the company for 7 years and had been promoted to operations leader and corporate trainer.

He was more of a process person and not a strategist like me.

He believed that because the company had standard processes for completing tasks that everyone should be able to achieve the same results.

That is so not true.

A physician with 10+ years of experience would be able to diagnose and provide a treatment plan faster than a new physician can. 

All achievement requires sacrifice, action, and adjustments, to name a few.

So many new hire trainees wanted to compete with me, and I knew the competition would be unfair

“Joe, I am going to break your ……….. Record.”

They thought that because I was tenured that I would be “rusty” and “lazy”.

Little did they know, I am an active practitioner — I like to stay current on what is going on regarding a specific topic and task.

Lastly, greatness can be achieved, but it won’t happen immediately; it will require patience, progress, and persistence.

What are your thoughts?

At The A Day To Lead Event last week, John C. Maxwell delivered a compelling insight: 

“There are people who know before they go, and there are those who go to know.”

We have all heard that failure is a part of success.

“Failure” is an essential part of success

Dr. John C. Maxwell shared a paradigm shift at the “A Day To Lead” Event regarding failure and success

“Keep failure and success together.”

“Apart from each other, they hurt each other.”

“Together they help each other.”

Failure + Success + Progress + Consistency = More Success

When you think of the word humility, what is the first thought that comes to your mind?

We all will experience humility, voluntary or involuntary.

“ Humility leads to teachability, and also builds resiliency” - John C. Maxwell

I agree with Dr. Maxwell, humility, teachability, and resiliency are all required for success, especially sustained success.

Resilience can be a tough experience, but it is needed because goals don’t always go according to plan.

Times will get hard, and resilience is a great friend to have on the journey to remind you to keep going through the tunnel - you will see the light you desire.
